2 Dhurga Rock information: Below is an information sheet that we prepared in late 2015, mainly for the use of Braidwood tour guides. Please let me know if you need anything not covered in this document. It is rather long… The Two Fires Committee has, over time, discussed ideas about what landscaping would be appropriate for the space around the Dhurga Rock, including more benches. We have also spoken with an indigenous elder about native plantings and bush tucker plants that would complement the Rock and its purpose very well.

THE DHURGA ROCK

in Ryrie Park South, Braidwood NSW WHAT IS THE DHURGA ROCK? The Dhurga Rock is a public expression of acknowledgement that this land was occupied and cared for by Aboriginal people of the Dhurga language group in the Yuin Nation for tens of thousands of years before European settlement. It is also an expression of regret that early colonisation dispossessed these people of their land, and that there was significant loss of life and culture as a result. Importantly also the Rock stands as an expression of aspiration that we can create a future where indigenous knowledge and wisdom are valued, and the land cared for eternally. The Rock takes the form of an impressive work of public art, beautifully placed in Ryrie Park in the centre of Braidwood.

It was unveiled on 16th May 2015, at the opening of the 2015 Two Fires Festival. WHY THE DHURGA ROCK? In 2014 Braidwood celebrated its 175th anniversary with many special events. And there was a lot to celebrate from the beginnings of the town to its current presence. However, for many in the community this highlighted the lack of public information about the long and rich Aboriginal history of the area. Let alone any acknowledgement or recognition that these first Australians lost their land to the new settlers and that in the process many lives were also lost. It is known that Aboriginal survivors were relocated to the south coast, having been denied land in this region by the new order. Some Aboriginal people with direct family links to the Braidwood area were brought up to believe that Braidwood was an unsafe place to visit. They have told us that many years ago their traditional walking trails from the coast to Weereewa (Lake George) had been re-routed around the town to avoid danger. Little is known about what this might have meant, as, like in most of Australia, much of the Aboriginal history of Braidwood has been hidden or denied and Aboriginal people marginalised. Braidwood in 2014 seemed a very “white” community. The Dhurga Rock is intended as a step towards healing past dislocation and trauma, and education about Aboriginal history and culture relating to this area. The Rock is also an expression of fundamental social justice, and community inclusiveness.

There are very few community-driven public acknowledgements in other towns in Australia. There are monuments in many places where known massacres of Aboriginal people occurred, but it is rare to see a monument acknowledging and addressing the general dispossession and resulting trauma affecting Aboriginal families and tribes. HOW DID THE ROCK COME ABOUT? The Dhurga Rock was an initiative of Braidwood’s Two Fires Festival Committee. The Two Fires Festivals of Arts and Activism have been held biennially in Braidwood since 2005. The Festivals celebrate the legacy of Australian poet and activist Judith Wright (1915 - 2000), who lived the last decades of her life in the Braidwood area. Judith was way ahead of her time in recognising and speaking out about the deep injustices experience by our indigenous people, and the Festival has had a strong indigenous stream since its inception. Committee members have over the years developed relationships with Aboriginal families and individuals with ancestral links to this area, and the early ideas for a public acknowledgement were developed in consultation with these people. Uncle Max Dulumunmun Harrison, a Walbanga elder of the Yuin nation has been involved with Two Fires Festivals since their inception. He was supportive and enthusiastic when first contacted about this project. After listening to the initial idea, and thinking awhile, he wryly said “Yes, so Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Sydney has the Opera House, and Braidwood will have the Rock”!

The Two Fires Committee sought and received significant support for the project from local community groups and individuals, as well as from Reconciliation Australia, and regional Aboriginal Cultural Teaching Groups. Local supporters included Braidwood and District Historical Society, Braidwood Heritage Society, Braidwood Life Centre, St Bede’s Social Justice Group, Braidwood Regional Arts Group, and both local schools Their sincere, thoughtful and encouraging letters were key to the project’s early development. Enthusiastic support was also received from the Bateman's Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council, as Braidwood falls in their area. Challenges and frustrations were met and overcome as the Committee sought funding for the project, and approval from the then Palerang Council, to place the Dhurga Rock on Council land. Due to the commitment and hard work of the Two Fires Committee, the Dhurga Rock project took under 18 months from conception in January 2014 to installation and unveiling in May 2015. THE ARTISTS AND THE STONE IAN MARR is a local artist, lettercutter and farmer. He is a master at inscribing letters in stone, and he readily agreed to be involved with the Dhurga Rock project. Ian sourced the STONE that became the Dhurga Rock from the Mintaro quarry in the Clare Valley in South Australia. It is a 3,000kg piece of Mintaro slate, from 900 million year-old metamorphic stone, deposited layer upon layer in a lake, perhaps volcanic, formed deep in the earth’s crust. It was then subject to extreme heat and pressure - cooked.

The word-inscribed face of the stone has spectacular contours suggesting an escarpment where Braidwood’s location sits in Yuin land, encompassing highland and coastal areas to the sea. In this setting Ian’s beautifully inscribed words visually change with the light and shadow of each passing day. Best viewed in sunlight - maybe? NOEL BUTLER is a Budawang elder with family links to Braidwood. He is an artist and an educator, with highly developed skills in wood-carving and in teaching culture in many settings. Noel designed and carved the north-east face of the stone, with animals and fish of special significance to his family and culture. As part of the Dhurga Rock project, Noel and his wife Trish conducted workshops with the two local schools, teaching enthusiastic students through dance, painting and stories. THE UNVEILING CEREMONY The Unveiling Ceremony, on 16th May 2015, followed the traditional fire-lighting and welcome to country by Uncle Max Dulumunmun Harrison and his family. A colourful crowd observed and applauded as our local Mayor Pete Harrison opened proceedings, followed by other members of the Braidwood community speaking of the significance of the Rock to them personally and to the Braidwood community. These words spoken on behalf of St Bede’s Social Justice Group were especially moving: “A stone wall provides a break from the winter breeze and shade from the summer sun. This stone piece stands, human in scale, not as a divide but as two parts of a shared story. The mid-morning sun will awaken the quiet

shadows of the Burnaaga (lizard) Gari (snake) and Bilima (turtle) the totemic ancestors of past and present that walked and lived in this country. The words of acknowledgement in shade, recalling loss and sorrow but also the willingness for the future children to share and value the respect and the culture of the local Indigenous peoples”. (Julian Laffan 2015) Impressive also were the local school students who included words in the Dhurga language as they spoke of what they had learnt about Aboriginal culture in the lead-up to the Rock’s unveiling. Jack Waterford AM officially unveiled the Dhurga Rock, with responses from local Aboriginal elders Max Dulumunmun Harrison and Noel Butler, and Tom Calma, Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia. A powerfully invoked song from Tjanara Goreng Goreng (a traditional performer and Songwoman from Central Queensland who has had previous involvement with the Two Fires Festival) was followed by dancing and celebrations. Young members of the Braidwood Dance Studio performed enthusiastically, and were followed by Aboriginal dance groups receiving, smoking and blessing the Dhurga Rock. Powerful performances by the Djaadjawan Dancers, the Ngaran Ngaran and Gulaga Dancers, women and men from the south coast with links to the Braidwood area, concluded the Unveiling Ceremony. Many local people walk through Ryrie Park daily, as well as many tourists stopping to rest and walk their dogs. The Dhurga Rock attracts their attention and many people take the time to look closely and read its inscription. Feedback from the community: "The opening was a great moment for our region and the rock is a physical reminder of hope for the future. Congratulations again. The classes from St. Bede's visited last week and look to having events and lessons at the Rock… I hope the monument will continue to build long term understanding.” (Teacher, St Bede’s School, 30th May 2015) “…Braidwood Preschool children experienced the Dhurga Rock when they went for a walk last week! They were interested in the animals and the rock. Could I please get the information and the Dhurga names of the animals on the rock, so we can continue to talk to the children about why these animals were chosen, and we can use the Dhurga names. If you have any other information/resources etc that you think we could use with the children, we would grateful to receive it from you?” (Director, Braidwood Preschool, 5th June 2015) “…I have just started working on a song with year 3 at ST Bedes to feed into the indigenous studies unit they have been doing. They’ve been looking at how people lived, food, shelter, hunting etc and I created a simple chorus …We will work on it for a few weeks and hopefully perform for the other students at some point. I would really like to do some of the rehearsals at the beautiful rock It is wonderful having that touchstone in the park. I find it a very powerful and sacred symbol.”

(Local singing teacher, 8th June 2015) And a recent anecdote: An older Aboriginal couple from the south coast were visiting in Ryrie Park, and a resident took the time to show them the Dhurga Rock (which they were unaware of). The woman had tears streaming down her face as she read the inscription. She said “I never thought I’d live to see this”. FUTURE POSSIBILITIES • The Dhurga Rock becomes a regular feature of Braidwood tours • A brochure/booklet about the Dhurga Rock to be distributed to Information and Cultural Centres in the region, to encourage visitors, and to connect with Aboriginal people with family links to this area. • Regular “Yarning Circles” around the Rock, where information and knowledge about the Aboriginal history of this area, and early relationships with the white settlers, can be safely shared. • Ceremonies and gatherings eg during NAIDOC Week, Sorry Day • A place to welcome to town other Aboriginal families interested in learning more about their ancestral links to this area. • A focus for gathering stories and information generally about our Aboriginal history. • Other local communities might consider creating a public acknowledgement of the Aboriginal history of their areas. We expect the legacy of the Dhurga Rock to last a long time. It’s key purposes of healing and education are both processes that take time, and can take many forms. The installation of the Dhurga Rock is but a beginning.

Two Fires Committee Sept 2015 UPDATE (August 2017) Since the installation, most of the “Future Possibilities” listed above are happening:

We have a Dhurga Rock flyer available locally and in the region

The Rock features in local tours

Local schools use the Rock as a focus for learning about indigenous culture and language

We have (and will continue to) hold ceremonies and gatherings at significant times (e.g. Mabo Day, and NAIDOC Week)

We expect to hold regular “yarning circles” for all people interested in sharing stories of early Braidwood history

The space is used for meeting Aboriginal people who are exploring their ancestral links to this area

We have received feedback from some Aboriginal people that they view the Dhurga Rock as a significant step forward in healing their dispossession from this area.

Preliminary Concepts”

Report by Phillips/Marler Consultants

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this report. I apologise for the

lateness of my response. I was involved in several discussions with the

consultants in my role as President of the Braidwood Garden Club, and I

attended the meeting in Braidwood where the consultants presented their

report.

Unfortunately I was away travelling during most of the prescribed period for

public submissions, and thought I had missed that opportunity. However I

have been advised that I can make a late submission.

I thank the previous Palerang Local Government Administration for

commissioning this study of the Braidwood CBD and Ryrie Park, and for

obtaining the grant which will enable at least some of the ideas to be

implemented. For years the centre of this lovely historic town has suffered

from neglect or indifference, and there has been no coherent strategy for

guiding its development. This is a wonderful opportunity to make our town

more attractive and functional for both residents and visitors.

The consultants have created a challenge in that so many of their ideas are

excellent. My comments reflect my experience as a resident of Braidwood

for 45+ years. In that time the town has changed dramatically, and has

become a much more diversified community. Tourism has transformed the

CBD and we have a growing population of younger residents. The centre of

the town has developed without any comprehensive plan. I look forward to

seeing many of the changes suggested in the report being implemented.

Ryrie Park

1. The division of the Park into “active” (Ryrie Park North) and “passive”

(Ryrie Park South) recreation areas acknowledges and continues the changes

Page 40: Ordinary Meeting of Council - City of Queanbeyan...2018/02/28  · 2 Dhurga Rock information: Below is an information sheet that we prepared in late 2015, mainly for the use of Braidwood

that have happened over time. I love the suggested changes to Ryrie Park

North, aimed at enlarging and improving the existing, outdated playground.

There are so many wonderful playgrounds for children in other towns, and

Braidwood’s children deserve the same. The controversy over the inclusion

of “skate elements” has obscured the merit of the concept as an integrated

youth precinct.

I have 6 grandchildren of different ages, and would love to see a play area

where all of them could be happily engaged in age-suitable activities. The

creation of two areas suitable for different ages is an excellent idea. The

recent rejection by Council of the suggested skate elements seems to reflect

an assumption that skating activities are not mainstream, and should be

located in a separate area. I have a 3 year-old grandson who takes his

scooter to a local skate park in Melbourne, and a 12 year old grandson who

is a very keen skateboarder. In other towns, both these activities take place

in the same skate park. They both require some adult supervision, of course.

I feel that the best way to facilitate this would be to incorporate all these

activities in the same area, enabling both active and passive surveillance.

Parents could then supervise children in one area, and skating could be just

one of a number of recreational activities available in close proximity to

each other. A larger skate park in another location would also be welcome.

The planting of trees on the northern boundary would help to offset concerns

about the appearance of the park to visitors arriving in the town. It’s

important to make the park as visually attractive as possible, while catering

for the real needs of the local community and its younger residents (and their

parents).

Other changes which make sense to me include the integration of public

amenities with the swimming pool amenities, and the creation of a path

network to link different areas. A short walk to the public toilets will be

offset by paths and sensible parking arrangements.

The consultants’ suggestions re Ryrie Park South would create a beautiful

and useful recreation space, as envisaged in the initial town plan for

Page 41: Ordinary Meeting of Council - City of Queanbeyan...2018/02/28  · 2 Dhurga Rock information: Below is an information sheet that we prepared in late 2015, mainly for the use of Braidwood

Braidwood. At the moment this is an underused area. Apart from market

days and occasional festivities, the locals don’t use it. Occasional groups of

visitors have lunch at the outdated furniture. The changes to the design and

plantings envisaged in the report would make it a much more attractive and

inviting space. Plantings which reflect seasonal changes, using the beautiful

cold climate plants which thrive in this climate, would transform this historic

area. I would like to see this area placed very high on the priority list for the

beautification of our town centre

I completely support the removal of the steps into Ryrie Park South, and the

creation of more defined entrances to the park at other locations. I would

also love to see the equally ugly concrete retaining wall covered with a stone

façade.

The suggested changes to the Wilson Street boundaries of the park have my

support, as long as we don’t lose any parking spaces there. Traffic calming

measures in Wilson Street would make a big difference, and would enable

easier access between Ryrie Park North and South. There is a lot of

pedestrian traffic in this space, and it needs to be made as safe as possible.

Duncan Street Corners

This corner is now the centre of our town, in every way. The haphazard

nature of parking in Wallace and Duncan Streets, and the poor quality of the

street verges needs to be addressed. The suggestions in the report would

visually transform this area, and also make it more functional

My only objection is to the suggestion that bus parking spaces be located

here. Every inch of parking space here is in demand by locals and visitors at

peak periods. There are very few buses requiring a space right in the centre

of town. A number of essential businesses are located here, including cafes,

the newsagents, the chemist, the bakery and the only bank in town, and it is

already often impossible to park close by.

I would also love to see the former verandah railings restored to the Albion

Building. The change in its appearance during the recent renovation has had

Page 42: Ordinary Meeting of Council - City of Queanbeyan...2018/02/28  · 2 Dhurga Rock information: Below is an information sheet that we prepared in late 2015, mainly for the use of Braidwood

Page 38 of the Ordinary Meeting of the QUEANBEYAN-PALERANG REGIONAL COUNCIL held 28 February 2018. Cr Tim Overall – Mayor, Chairperson

a big visual impact on that central corner. The previous verandah railing was

historically accurate, while the current one is functional but looks

completely out of place. The protection supposedly provided by being a

designated “NSW Heritage Town” seems to have failed completely in this

instance. It may be too late to change this. Along with many other residents,

I hope that existing Heritage requirements are enforced on all Braidwood’s

significant buildings in the future.

Retail Precinct Paving

Wallace Street has a haphazard combination of street paving surfaces, in

various stages of disrepair. The suggestions aimed at creating a more

uniform surface in harmony with the historic character of the buildings are

welcome. A light grey colour would be my personal preference.

Pedestrian Crossings

Any way to reduce the visual impact of these crossings is welcome, while

maintaining the functional aspects. All the report’s suggestions are very

sensible and have my support. I also like the idea of street trees at the

southern crossing, near the bank. This is a very busy space, and a couple of

small trees would really enhance it both visually and functionally.

Parking

This has become a big problem in the last few years. While we do need

space for long vehicles, buses etc, the primary need is for more car parking

spaces in or near the CBD.

Further to my previous comments re bus parking in Wallace St, I believe

that dedicated bus parking should be located adjacent to Ryrie Park North on

both sides of Wallace St. Long vehicles, trailers etc could also use that

space – there is a lot of room there!

There is a bus zone opposite the Post Office, which is used primarily by the

school bus to and from Goulburn. It is empty most of the time. Perhaps a

time limit could be indicated here, to allow for use by cars and/or other

buses when not required by the school bus. The school bus is only there for

Page 43: Ordinary Meeting of Council - City of Queanbeyan...2018/02/28  · 2 Dhurga Rock information: Below is an information sheet that we prepared in late 2015, mainly for the use of Braidwood

a very brief period early in the morning and in the early evening. The bus

zone outside the Court House is also only used for brief periods each day.

Tourist buses could perhaps also be given access to that space outside the

current regular bus times.

Pressure on parking around Ryrie park is experienced at times, and this may

increase as the park is upgraded. There is an area on the eastern edge of

Ryrie park North which is not available at the moment for parking. This

could be levelled and developed for parking for cars using the park and the

swimming pool.

Defined parking spaces along Duncan Street would also help, as would the

proposed off- street parking area.

Again thank you for commissioning this report. Congratulations to the

Consultants who have produced an excellent report to guide the future

development and beautification of Braidwood’s Town Centre.

53 Need trees in the main street and covered cables. It looks like a setting for a western and is very ugly.

People fight to get under the trees to park in summer and the trees are constantly mangled by bad tree

surgery.

54 Wallace Street

Crossing

Great design. Priorities:

Safety

Drainage

Parking / street design

Young peoples facilities, esp playground and skate park

55 Keep our same old seats and fix up. Not turn into an abstraction (street seats)

56 Agapanthus don’t survive severe frosts here n winter therefore not suitable

57 New paving will over gentrify

58 Crossing 1: Tree planting, ground cover, same as crossing 2

59 No mention of Wallace Street south and Lascelles despite existing and new developments

60 A Pedestrian refuge in the centre of Wallace Street at the crossings and not a Zebra crossing people get

killed on these. Most towns now have the refuges, good examples are Goulburn and Queanbeyan.

61 The proposals are a big improvement. Would love trees at the National Theatre crossing as described

62 Use granite for stone finish, the grey / pink tone concrete or even greenish to reflect lichen.

63 The assumption that vehicles travel at around 30kph at top crossing, outside Royal Hotel, may not be true at

all times, especially long weekends.

64 Please don’t make it look too new as it will be ugly

65 Yay a cool slab of concrete with curves. Just don’t change Braidwood too much.

66 Consistent street footpath paving

67 Changing the bollards is a must

68 Plantings sound fantastic

69 Spend funds on Footpaths before style upgrades

70 2 tall trees and bollards is good. Great.

71 Love it!

72 Love ideas of bollards, not blisters

73 Like the pavement suggestions

74 Big tick to plantings at crossings and bollards

75 Duncan / Wallace

Street Intersection

Not sure about the bus parking here

76 Love the design. Don’t think buses should stop here though.

77 The paving around this intersection needs to be soft. Big kid Family hangout, bikes and dogs

78 Please keep some decomposed granite parking spaces, they feel rural not city and that why we live here.

79 I like the paving idea but can we please be very careful it doesn’t look too modern / polished. The granite

sometimes looks a bit cheesy.

80 No buses out front of Albion, on Wallace. Busses up on Duncan.

81 Good idea shortening the distance for pedestrians.

82 Only 2 small trees mentioned for lower pedestrian crossing. More trees required for summer shading and

seating under. Still just tar and cement with a continuous car park each side of the street. Overall, great to

see some progress.

83 Great concept. Love the idea of enhancing corners

84 Priority one please

85 In Beechworth the granite gutters have little bridges over them for pedestrians and are considered precious

historic features. Not dug up as they are here.

86 Duncan & Wallace Street intersection – roundabout? With colourful planting.

87 Support for Duncan st intersections particularly colour scoping 4 major corner buildings and repainting, plus

removal of Albion buildings balconies and replacement with heritage appropriate code compliant patter in

timber

88 No bus stop in front of Albion. Maybe further south near the church

89 No buses to stop near Duncan St / Wallace Street please

90 Priority Duncan Street intersection and Ryrie Park North

91 Consistent street sealing

Which aspects of the plan should be undertaken as a priority? What should be

done first?

Aug 16 17 03:04:57 pm

Amazing and inclusive plans for the community of Braidwood, well done all involved! Perhaps the 40k zone could be extended past the preschool on Wilson St. Being home to many amazing sculpture artisits maybe some local artwork could be included? We hope the playground and skate elements are to be designed and built by reputable providers, who take into account the look and feel of our town, perhaps incorporating historical relics similar to what was achieved in Nambour QLD. Finally, perhaps a small stage or performance space for local buskers, dj's or use during community concerts etc?

I strongly advocate for the youth to be prioritised in Ryrie Park north. They are a demographic that has been largely forgotten by successive councils here in Braidwood. We are desperately lacking the infrastructure to support their needs, and in an age where screen time and childhood obesity are a real issue, the time is now! As you may know, Braidwood had to already forgo funding for a skatepark during the Palerang era, after the community agreed the location was unsuitable, please make sure this is a priority as it's far overdue! Cheers. :)

The ideas put forward for Wallace Street and Ryrie Park are fantastic. I commend Council and Phillips/Marler on their efforts with this. It was clear from the Community meeting that a good amount of research was done and the residents feedback has been carefully studied to produce this result. Nicely done.

While I would love to see everything done at the same time, it's certainly not going to happen with only $500,000. I think the proposed developments for the parking and beautification of the Wallace & Duncan Street intersection would be a fantastic start, and also the long vehicle parking bays next to Ryrie Park too.

Aug 16 17 04:10:00 pm

I am one of the Community Development Officers at QPRC, with the recently endorsed Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) high on our agenda. We have recently applied for funding through the Department of Social Services, Inclusive Communities Grants to purchase and install three adult change tables in selected public toilets around the region, including Ryrie Park Braidwood.

Upgrade to the Ryrie Park toilet facility to improve disability access.

Consultation undertaken as part of the DIAP identified a strong need for accessible toilets which including the provision of adult change tables to meet the needs of people with severe and profound disability and their carers and families. The outcome of this grant is still pending. Is there scope to include an adult change table in the Ryrie Park toilets redevelopment, as well as considering disability access to the toilets?

Aug 16 17 04:24:50 pm

Reconfiguration of pedestrian crossings is commendable. Incorporating trees on Wallace street is most welcome. Dedicated motorcycle parking is good. I disagree with bus/coach parking in the centre of town. There is no town bus service requiring bus stops in these locations. Coaches should be accommodated near the park as they presently are to avoid congesting the main precinct. It's only a block to walk and that's where the services are! Planters at the Duncan St corners to protect and enhance the plane trees is excellent. This seems likely to make it safer for cars to turn into Wallace St as well as for pedestrian amenity. While some areas of footpath may benefit from upgrading I wonder about the potential loss of texture and diversity if the same pavement treatment extends throughout town. If this is to happen, then bland neutrality is probably OK. I would not support removing the stone surfacing in the gutters or the timber driveway bridges. In terms of Ryrie Park, I support new play equipment catering to a range of ages and activities. I think integrating cycling, skooters and skating is great as long as people with vision and mobility challenges can feel safe too. There needs to be appropriate, secure fencing for the small children's play area. I would encourage careful planning of new plantings to ensure that there is still lots of open grass area for play and running around. There must also be unstructured access to trees for climbing. Not all play

I believe the traffic and pedestrian related proposals for Wallace St are fine to go ahead and would bring immediate improvements to the functioning and appearance of the busy heart of town. Also traffic calming at Wilson St. is a priority. I urge more consultation regarding changes in South Ryrie Park, so hesitate to endorse investing in changes there yet. I think improved play spaces in North Ryrie Park would be great and well appreciated by many people, both residents and visitors. I would prioritise that aspect of the plan with the strong proviso that existing amenities stay as they are, until more consultation has been allowed for concerning pool redevelopments. Since that will be an expensive component anyway, that could be considered for development at a later stage when more funding is available.

happens on equipment! Also provision of filtered drinking water at numerous locations please. In general I think BBQ's and tables etc all seem good. Also the species selection seems fine. I question how well the existing semi-formal users of the South Ryrie Park will be accommodated in the new proposal. Lots of flexible, informal space enables events like the Braidwood Monthly Markets, the Daffodil Fair, Anzac Day Ceremonies, Two Fires Festivals and Gatherings at Dhurga Rock. Too many paths and formal plantings will limit space for these activities. Also the Park Party QPRC held last year was great. Will there still be space for such things like a full stage, bouncing castle and climbing wall etc. Or was that a one off? I believe it is disrespectful to gather up all existing memorials and lump them together in a corner, to keep it tidy. Their existence and their positioning are part of the layering of local history. Perhaps to some they seem insignificant, arbitrary and untidy but each one represents something and for the most part that will be community volunteering and engagement and sense of place. I would much rather see more effort made to respect each one and entwine new plantings, paths and seats around them in a way that enhances their presence rather than dislodging and disrespecting them. I would strongly urge specific consultation to be undertaken with the Two Fires Festival Representatives and members of the Indigenous communities who were involved with the installation of the Dhurga Rock. They have aspirations for the use of the space around the rock and would like to see particular plantings enhance this space. Again, this is a significant part of our living community's growth and needs to be respected and enabled. Why not let them have some control over design of that area?

I am happy with the idea of unifying and updating street furniture if it is robust, uses natural materials where possible and is practical. I am apprehensive about being shown inspirational examples of "interpretation and seating". If there are to be interpretive installations I believe these need to be a genuine expression of the community, an actual initiative of the community and not lumped in with the street furniture. By all means, factor in areas where these items can be accommodated in the future, but leave them to the community to create, please. Come to that, perhaps we can invite the high school kids to produce some sculptures to grace our community park in collaboration with our brilliant local metalworking community? Finally, I support the community initiative to undertake a full consultation and feasibility study into possible options for refurbishing or redeveloping the Braidwood Memorial Pool. I think there may be an opportunity for a fruitful Community-Council partnership to meet several needs in this district currently not being met in Braidwood. I urge patience and cooperation in discussing these possibilities. Clearly these could have significant implications for the North Ryrie Park area, specifically considering the proposal to relocate toilet amenities into a shared facility at the pool site. I agree with the intention to make a more permeable edge along Wilson Street and link the two areas of Park, however I am not convinced the location of the toilets in the pool complex and so close to the play areas is the best solution. These are the primary services for thousands of people passing through town. Often, it’s the only thing they do in town. Let’s not shove that in our children’s faces. Again, I think this aspect, and the pool itself, needs much more thought and discussion.

Great plans, hopefully we can get some more funds.

All the ideas are really good., especially the north Ryrie park plan. The children in Braidwood deserve a great adventure area , excercise is paramount to health. We need to provide as many opportunities as possible for our youngsters to use their energy well. I believe the money would be well spent in this endeavour, our children are the future.

Aug 16 17 06:40:08 pm

I am impressed that the plan covers a number of areas of the main street, and has a grand vision, rather than small piecemeal ideas. I especially like the plans for Ryrie Park, and think that separate play areas for younger and older children is fantastic!! I don't like the idea of the two bus parking spaces in the Wallace Street - I think this will take too many car parks out of the main street, as it is already difficult to find a car space on weekends; and I think having buses parked in the main street will block the view of the heritage buildings for pedestrians and passing traffic. Thanks for such a great plan!! :)

The improvements to North Ryrie Park, especially the playground, should be number 1 priority!! This is because the current playground equipment and (lack of) softfall are very dangerous. I know of a child who broke there leg after coming down the slippery dip and landing heavily!! Also, there are currently no suitable facilities for older children, so the facilities in this plan are very much needed! The improvements to the Duncan St/Wallace St intersection should definitely be lower down the priority list.

Aug 16 17 09:12:29 pm

This upgrade & work is long overdue. Well done The playgrounds & skate park.

Aug 16 17 09:33:19 pm

These plans are great! I particularly like the skate elements in the South Ryrie Park plans - so important for including our town's young people in a central area. The playgrounds for different ages will be great for my kids, along with a much-needed upgrade of the pool. I can't wait to see the end of those sad-looking hessian fences!

South Ryrie park playground and pool development - this is the area that will most benefit Braidwood families, as well as tourists.

The plans look great. With regard to the younger and older children's playgrounds, I'm keen to see the use of natural materials - sand, rocks and boulders, iron, hardwood, ropes, water - to create play areas that are beautiful to look at and provide areas for imaginative as well as physical play. The playground at Darling Harbour, Sydney is a great example, though on a rather larger scale. I strongly hope we won't end up with merely an updated, brightly-coloured version of the unimaginative, factory-formed playground we have now. Please let's create something unique to and for Braidwood.

Ryrie Park North and Wilson St.

Aug 17 17 10:43:53 pm

Parking - I believe it would be a mistake to have coach parking on Wallace St at the Duncan Street Intersection. Suggestion is to create coach parking adjacent to Ryrie Park North either on Wallace St or Wilson St for easy access to public toilets, to have morning tea in the park and allow children to play etc. This is supported by drivers of coaches carrying a variety or tours that visit or pass through Braidwood. To park coaches in Wallace St in the proposed location would cause obstruction to those wanting to photograph the prominent buildings on each corner. There are only 2 public toilets available next to the National Theatre (1 male, 1 female). There is a greater demand for car parking in the proposed spaces compared to the frequency that coaches would be parked in the same location meaning higher pressure upon available parking for cars. If both Ryrie Parks are to be redeveloped as planned they need to have the coaches stop there so that visitors can enjoy the facilities and amenity of those parks.

I would like to see priority given to the following:- 1.The removal and reconstruction of the pedestrian crossing kerb extensions. 2. The Wallace St/Duncan St landscaping. 3. Car parking upgrade in Duncan St east and west of Wallace St. (No bus parking) 4. Upgrade of footpaths in Wallace St. 5. Upgrade of road surface in Wilson St in accordance with the proposed plans

Aug 19 17 05:03:36 pm

I look forward to the beautification of the main street. We have a beautiful town but as with most things a bit of improvement doesn't go astray. The beatification can only be a benefit to our lovey town for visitors and something locals can take even more pride in, in living in our town. It will go a long way to make Braidwood a destination, not

The priority should be the main street beautification first as this is the most visual as you drive over the hill into town. The park is still very usable as it is for a while longer until the main street is done and the parking is addressed.

just a quick stop over or just a drive through. Care must be taken so we do not lose any more parking spaces. The loss of parking spaces when the helicopter landing pads at the crossings went in meant loss of foot traffic for some businesses. But having dealt with the RMS I do understand the siting regulations for reversing traffic. I have had a look at the new proposed plans for Ryrie Park and except for the skate park I think it looks good. It will make the park a much more comfortable and user friendly atmosphere and an upgraded play ground is long overdue. This is a very popular and important park for visitors, coach stops and locals alike. I strongly object to the skate park being in the main street. My husband and I have traveled extensively and when the skate park was first proposed in the park I strongly objected then, NOT to the skate park but its proposed (by a noisy minority) position I think it a wonderful facility for the kids, so as we traveled around recently I took note of skate parks in other towns big and small in 3 different states. NOT ONE WAS IN A MAIN STREET. They were either part of a sporting complex, ovals, basket ball courts etc. or they were stand alone facilities in usually a small park like area. So again NOT ONE WAS IN A MAIN STREET. I believe the money was allocated for it to be at the rec ground, included in the rec redevelopment, but unfortunately the very selfish persons advocating for the park made the building of it at the rec a non event. This selfish minority chose to not have a skate park at all instead of having it at the rec because they couldn't get what they wanted and it was only the kids that missed out on having one built. I understand that the wonderful people that run the Life Center and run all the youth activities wanted it at the rec ground so all the youth activities were together and kids were safe where there would be supervision and not up on the main street close to traffic,

And in the mean time the positioning of the skate park should be addressed with maybe other options looked at.

possibly with no supervision. Surely this makes sense. The design shows a large expanse of concrete, what heritage value does a large expanse of concrete have? I would rather the trees stay and the gardens be enhanced and the terraced lawn area stay as it softens the area around the pool where a mass concrete area will not. The plan does not show if it will be a bowl or a flat concrete area (another helicopter landing pad?) If it is to be a bowl of some sort where is the safety factor? What is to stop a young child falling into a bowl and getting seriously hurt? Who is going to clean up the inevitable graffiti (it is very naive to think there won't be any)? Who is going to clean up the mess and rubbish that will collect at the bottom of a bowl? I do not want my rates to be used to continually clean up a concrete bowl, there are too many other things that it needs to be spent on that are more beneficial to town and its residents. If it is a flat surface again the graffiti and what about trip hazards and safety issues with things sticking up from the ground? Again I certainly do not want my rate money to go towards settling a compensation claim because someone got hurt using it unsupervised. This lovely park is the entrance to our town what is it going to look like when visitors stop in our Heritage town for a break and maybe a BBQ only to find a mass expanse of ugly concrete. We are so fortunate to have our heritage so again I ask what does an expanse of mass concrete have to do with heritage? The area around the pool will look very hard with all that concrete. Was another place considered for the skate park or was it just the selfish noisy minority that get their way after all without thought to how others feel. I have made my feelings on the position (not the skate park itself) of the skate park known at the time earlier but these people trolled me online and abused me for all to see just

for having a different opinion to them, so I ended up keeping my opinion to my self so I am hoping that with this forum I can express my opinion about how I feel about the positioning of the skate park without being abused online by these people. In this weeks paper there was a comment published that stated that "there was nowhere for young people to go" this statement is so WRONG! HOW COULD SOMEONE SAY THIS there are many activities for young people in town. Just ask the wonderful people that run the Life Center, or the scouts, or the sporting teams, or the facilities at the club. How dare someone make such a statement, they are either part of the group advocating a skate park in our main street or they do not know our town at all. To say this then publish it is wrong and a retraction should be published with a list of all the things there are for young people to do in this town so the information on young people activities can be measured with fair reporting not just one sided. I hope my opinion is noted and not just pushed aside because of a noisy selfish minority because from what I see theirs is the only plan for a skate park positioning that has been put forward to the community.

Aug 20 17 03:28:24 pm

All really viable and needed upgrades and improvements. Our family is particularly keen to see redevelopment of play zones - we have 5 children who will all, along with their friends and other families, benefit from having further things to keep them active in the area.

Redevelopment of play zones, toilets and landscaping at Ryrie Park north.

Skateboarding in Ryrie Park....Nice Idea But In the Wrong Spot I was alarmed and horrified to see concept plans for Ryrie Park North showing skateboarding facilities meters from my doorstep, my lounge room and my upstairs bedroom. Also meters from my town accommodation business 'Clyde

Cottage. Part of my advertising for my cottage is to come and stay and relax and unwind. Not with skateboard facilities meters away from it they won't. Out of the whole of the north and south park to choose from it has been placed as close to peoples homes as they could possibly get. We have a right to live in our homes in relative peace and quiet most of the time. Skateboarding will have a negative impact on our peace at home and destroy the quiet amibience of the north park too. We live in a bit of a valley here and the noise carries very well. Moreover the best views of the park to Braidwood Wilsons Hill are taken by this skateboarding area. The children's play areas are moved closer to the public toilets and that's not a good thing. The park is well used by families with smaller children all year round but especially in summer, for picnicing, sitting and enjoying the sun and views and often people stop to have a break from driving with their children and animals. Would have a negative affect on tourists wanting to stop for lunch too. I would think that there is not really enough room for it either and trees would have to taken out to do so. Also would be placed too close to parked cars on the road. Especially a problem if there is a projectile skateboard. The pathways and the road so close would be a temptation too great and they would be free to roam around the public toilet and children's play areas because no one is going to police that. Skateboarding predominantly but not solely is enjoyed by young teenage boys and I worry would bring about bad language and loud music as well. About 1 1/2 years ago a temporary skate ramp was built near the pool entrance and used for the day. We became aware of it from the noise inside our home from the sound of the rollering and clatter of the boards along with the loud music coming from large speakers. A few hours in and it

became unbearable and I had to leave my home suffering with anxiety while my husband wanted to stay home to keep an eye on things but he was very stressed about it all . My neighbour told me she shut off most of her house and hunkered down in the back of it to get away from the noise. We didn't want to make too much of an objection at the time because we were worried about a backlash and getting graffiti painted on our rammed earth walls which we would never get off. So we hoped that would be the end of it. My husband suffers from a form of Luekemia, Non Hodgkins Lymphoema and is on his second round of treatment for this. The worst thing for him is to be stressed and anxious and this issue will cause him to be just that so am trying to sheild him from it as much as I can. A skateboard facility would be better suited to the Rec Ground. More in keeping with the more vigorous activities that are already there like the BMX track which skateboarding seems to go hand in hand with. About 2 years ago pre-approved funding was given for skateboard facilities and the Rec Ground in the Stage 1 upgrade. I was told that the group wanting the facilities weren't happy with that and wanted it put in Ryrie Park instead and set about trying to get that happening. The approval was for the Rec Ground only and so the BMX track and basketball courts were builit without the skateboarding facilities and the money went elsewhere. Getting things approved by Council and money allocated is time consuming and not an easy thing so sounds unbelievable to me. Don't know all the details here but this skateboarding group sound like they were looking the gift horse in the mouth. A skateboard facility will also decrease the value of my property as that would definately not be seen as an asset. This park is not suitable for skateboarding facilities and

object to one being located within meters of family homes and a much needed town accommodation business. The long bays for vehicles and trailors is also a concern. This would take away parking for the park which would mean many more vehicles would use the Lane to park. At the moment the parking works well....bigger vehicles with boats and trucks use it as there is usually enough space and the cars can still park there. Also me and my neighbours are surprise that we never received any letter from Council regarding this potential upgrade to the park seeing as we would be affected most by any changes there. We really need this to go heard for the youth of Braidwood. Being one of them myself I feel like there is a lack of opportunity for us to do/progress in the sports we love like skateboarding and other action sports. It's important to me and many others that the Ryrie Park plan to goes ahead as it is a healthy environment for us to socialise and be active. I hope this all goes well!

I think the skatepark is the priority.

Aug 26 17 08:31:07 pm

I have heard that there is potential for a skate park to be built in Braidwood. I feel that should be prioritised in order to give the many youth in the area something productive and enjoyable to do in their spare time.

Braidwood has needed a skate park for decades and I'm quite sure 100% of young people from Braidwood are glad that they are finally getting one. Everything else in the plan I couldn't care less about but I do welcome the changes, I think they will make Braidwood a nicer place.

In my opinion the skatepark should be the priority as it has taken too long. For over a decade generations of young people have fought hard to get a skatepark and it can't come soon enough.

Aug 26 17 08:41:13 pm

I like the idea for Ryrie Park North to include areas for everyone from young to old and the combining of the toilet blocks to make more room for these areas.

I would like to see the Ryrie Park plans implemented first, would be great for families, local and otherwise, to hang out before or after a swim, play on some new playground equipment, have a BBQ, have a skate....

Aug 26 17 08:41:21 pm

I think this is a great idea for Braidwood despite all the negative remarks about the skate elements. I strongly believe the youth deserve a place to skateboard just as much as any other sport deserves a place to play.

I think the skatepark should definitely take priority because many people have been asking for it for many years.

Aug 27 17 09:03:22 am

Plans look good- happy to see skate elements included.

Ryrie Park North- Skate Park elements in particular. I have a 13 year old and a 10 year old and there are no facilities for this age group in town other than the pool when it's open.

Aug 27 17 09:32:23 am

Fantastic. Love it. New area for children, improved playpark and skating area is essential if my young family is to stay in the region. Can you consider some of the play area to be under shade cloth though. The current park equipment burns in summer and we are only heating up this world!!

Park for kids, followed by fixing crossing areas and sidewalks. Our children don't have much in braidwood and it's hard to always take them to Canberra or elsewhere. Braidwood is becoming a vibrant town for the younger generations but we need some outdoor areas to support that move ASAP.

Aug 27 17 09:32:36 am

It will be good if we have new playground area for younger kids to older kids. Kids need lots of activities. It will also attract tourist, they will stay in Braidwood abit longer.

1. Playground 2. Public toilet 3. Swimming pool

Aug 27 17 09:34:28 am

The concept plans show a good balance for all members of community both young and old

The Youth precinct needs to be made a priority. More things for young people to do in the community fosters a sense of belonging to the community as a whole. Ideas for the skate park are an example of that and should be considered first and foremost in the councils minds

Aug 27 17 09:50:10 am

I believe that it is in the council's best interest to equally prioritise the youth of braidwood in terms of the skatepark elements of the new plan. These elements will provide many local braidwood kids with the opportunity to do things in braidwood that they were otherwise unable to do. I believe if these plans go ahead, it will strengthen the relationship between the people of braidwood and the council, for, if the council is not here for the people, who are they here for?

The skatepark aspect, as there is nothing quite like it already in braidwood.

Aug 27 17 01:24:20 pm

I am excited by the plans

I think the priority should be on active outdoor spaces for all our community. I am excited by the skate park elements and the other fun play adventure parts.

Aug 27 17 03:28:51 pm

I think the plans look FANTASTIC!! I love the inclusion o f the skate elements and a new play area for little children. I do hope it uses more nature based play rather than the standard coloured play park. Timber and sand and plants and water :) The only thing I would like to see included is a fence in the young play area so that parents can relax that close to the streams of canberra traffic. Great to see some street tree planting and attention paid to the terrible neglected gardens on the main street too.

I think the play areas (skate park and play areas) should take priority along with the planting of street trees and plants.

Aug 27 17 03:33:51 pm

I approve these concept plans. I especially approve the inclusion of skate elements in the park. Young people of all ages deserve to have their needs met in the park. Skating facilities will provide a place for the young people of Braidwood who are involved in skate culture a place to

practice their art form proudly and safely in a public place. As someone who grew up visiting Braidwood frequently I would have appreciated facilities like these.

Aug 27 17 05:17:28 pm

Seating to north will be facing into people's houses. Electric car charging points seem like a really great innovation for Braidwood. I Defiinetly think that the skate elements are the most important elements to be focusing on predominately because there is demographic of skaters in Braidwood and passing through, that is a lot larger than you think and there is nothing to offer there people to support their self-improving, active hobby and interests. These people need support and opportunity to keep the community growing and get our youth and people of the future a chance to have a say and a chance in Braidwood.

The skate park elements.

Aug 27 17 08:58:24 pm

I'm really pleased that such a comprehensive plan has been proposed. I am excited to see some long term thinking and imagination used about what is possible. This is a refreshing change. I am particularly pleased that there is an integration of various aged play and activity areas in the park near the pool. It is really important to me that the skate park aspect has been co located in such a central place. I have visited other towns where this is the case and it helps create a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere where young people are valued and welcome. I would like to see natural materials, locally sourced where possible for the playground equipment, and the opportunity for local community arts projects to be incorporated in the design if possible

I would like to see the children's playground upgrade and skate space prioritised. This space is long overdue for a complete overhaul.

Aug 30 17 11:31:04 am

Considering the number of people making use of the skate park area I am against the inclusion of this facility as it is a waste of funds to benefit a minority. We are a highway town and most parents would not allow their children to use the facility unattended. There is also a matter of attracting graffiti and high cleaning costs of broken glass and rubbish which the area will attract.

Footpaths definitely.

Aug 30 17 01:29:17 pm

Should be using local granite for any landscaping and incorporate local made sculpture and recreational apparatus as much as possible. Woodenplay area not full of plastic equipment. A climbing wall could be incorporated easily with the necessary safety standards applied. Love the vision for our modern day funky heritage town.

Young kids playground and skate park area should be priority.

Aug 31 17 08:29:00 am

A skatepark in a must in the ryrie park upgrade. Skaters need a place to skate.

The Braidwood skatepark

Aug 31 17 10:31:12 am

Great to see real thought being put into this proposal – keeping the Southern end of the park as the traditional parkland and utilising the Northern end for play and improved ammenities. Seeing new play equipment and the skate element is fantastic. The 'skate' area is in a section of the park that is under-utilised so makes good use of space (better in every way than at the rec ground). Very happy to see the needs of Braidwood's younger demographic getting acknowledged in this proposal.

The park development seems to me a greater priority than street improvements such as new paving.

Make sure you get some proper designers for the park so it doesn't end up like bungendore

The skatepark should be first because that was mean to to be done but was canceled and we got a bike track that no one useses instead.

Sep 01 17 07:35:18 am

I feel that instead of narrowing Wilson St to Park Lane, the road should be widened to accommodate car parking up the middle of the rd and with long vehicle parking either side as in Gibralter St Bungendore. Ryrie Park South still has to be considered for monthly market stall holders.

Road and parking should be done first!

I am extremely concerned that submissions to several council proposals are not allowing ratepayers to contribute comments for several large proposed projects after the council elections on 11th September. For any amalgamated council to close feedback on several proposed ventures where a great deal of ratepayers money is proposed to be spent and to do this for several development proposals is a problem. Council should not be starting developments, knowing it has insufficient funds, and then expecting state taxpayers to then supply council grants for the shortfall of money. This method will more than likely mean that QPRC ratepayers will eventually have to pay for these shortfalls by paying increased rates in the QPRC area. QPRC seems to be trying to juggle several quite large proposed plans that involve large outputs of money, rather than first saving up money, running proposals past ratepayers, after an elected council

is running, and not trying to over-develop some areas simultaneously. I am disappointed in the fact that an unelected administrator seems to be trying to push through numerous development sagas, before an elected council has taken over the administration of the QPRC. Braidwood, as a heritage type town, needs much more careful and sensitive development than seems to be offered in this Braidwood development proposal.

The plan is so flawed, The RMS toilet Block, in the line of sight of the police Station, along with the NPWS Information Boards are two projects, that were well plan and hard fought for. To disregard work that has been achieved by ratepayers is inconsiderate.

Where are the public bins located at the park as there do not seem to be any indicated on the plans. Also please speak with myself Vanessa Palmer about the final design of the bins. They should only have one opening and be clearly signed for garbage and or recycling. Bins should also be in pairs if there are going to be both recycling and garbage. They also need to easily accessible to public and to those who have to empty and service them.

I am very happy to see plans to develop Ryrie Park North to include more dynamic play options for our young people. I am a Braidwood resident, with two young children (6 and 9). I strongly support this initiative, especially the inclusion of the skate park elements, and other play elements for older children -- not just primary school children. It is vitally important to situate youth activities in vibrant, visible spaces, so they are not overrun by delinquents. Although my kids enjoy the BMX track at the recreation ground, I will not let them play there by themselves, as the surrounding woods are full of empties and abandoned bongs. I strongly support this plan!!

Ryrie Park North!! We need more dynamic play areas for older children!

1)"Skating away from Heritage" in the Braidwood Times says it all. Instead of Beautification of Braidwood, it MUST be Preservation of Heritage Braidwood. I have lived in Braidwood for 35 years, establishing Torpy's Restaurant here on the basis of building awareness to the opportunity for visitors to enjoy a Heritage Town established in 1839. This 'beautification' of Ryrie Rark North to include a further "play" area & skate park facility is offensive & shows no understanding of the Georgian concepts our town was designed around. What we have in this area of the Park is sufficient & just needs landscaping, to compliment it. A Skate park belongs down in the Recreation Grounds at the southern end of town. 2)The Amenities block works well .Why replace it? & Wilson street thru the park also works well. Monies would be better spent in the main street precinct. *Your map talks about Caravan & Trailer parking on the Western side of Wallace St at Ryrie Park Nth BUT the markings on the map are on the EASTERN Side of Wallace St at the park ???****** 3/ Tour Bus parking in Wallace St, is also an "eye saw" to the landscape of the town. Put it in Duncan St.

1) Wallace St Paving & Pedestrian crossing modifications. 2) Flood mitigation at the pedestrian crossings. 3) Definition of the Tree plantings in Duncan St. 4) Landscaping in Ryrie Park. *DEFINATELY NO SKATEPARK "BEAUTIFICATION" IN RYRIE PK NORTH.**

It's wonderful to see a space that includes everyone. As an avid voice for a Skatepark in the center of town I'm so happy to see Council taking our request seriously. I feel strongly that a community that gives space to youth is a community that will capitalise on great things happening for and with our youth. Well done Council! Please don't stop now. From Hollie Baker

I'd love to see a formalised plan that includes beautiful imagery so that nay-sayers who don't understand the vision can see how this space can be created AND honour heritage aspects of town. I'm particularly interested in free-play, unstructured spaces for the children's playgrounds, such as the one that Nick Bray built in Googong. Nick Bray's landscape architecture (made from natural materials and chainsawed logs) would very well suit Braidwood and this type of open playground fosters adaptability and encourages imaginative play. It's also much more financially viable than typical playgrounds. I'm encouraged to see this initial plan even without full funding, unconcerned about where the money will come from. Other members of our community are not so convinced because they lack the vision of how this space could come to be. If council can show the community a good, beautiful, bespoke plan that addresses the concerns of heritage, I believe people will get behind it and more likely to participate in raising funds themselves. Thank you again.

Sep 01 17 06:12:52 pm

A very well thought-out plan that addresses many key issues. The consultation meeting at Braidwood was very impressive - especially as the Consultants really seemed to be listening and taking on board community concerns. I hope that the proposed changes to the Wilson St surface - to slow traffic, could be extended quite a bit further so that the entry to the PreSchool could be included. Some elderly residents are voicing strong objections to having a skateboard area in Ryrie Park North - I am elderly myself but don't share their views. The play area layout is cleverly done and will keep children and young people safely away from we tottering elders. Nor does a skateboard area detract from Braidwood's Heritage

All of it! Well, maybe the Wallace St pavements and the Duncan St intersection but really just get as much of the whole plan done until the money runs out. Meanwhile start trying to gain more funding.

character. Heritage Listing should not mean absolutely everything remains unchanged for ever. Braidwood can be a pretty boring place for the youth and these plans will help. I urge you to support the current proposal.

Sep 01 17 09:19:03 pm

I like the idea of using native trees and shrubs when possible, especially wto keep the landscape in good condition during drought etc

I think the street scape should be done first

Sep 02 17 01:43:29 pm

I question the need for a ratepayer-funded skate park. Quite a small number of people/kids actually use these things, they are mostly male kids, and I don't like seeing a small number of squeaky wheels get the oil. Skate parks are quite ugly too. Ryrie Park is lovely, but it won't be with a big expanse of concrete, and the inevitable vandalism and damage that seems to go with skate parks. Why can't they have this thing on a separate bit of ground, and perhaps if they were obliged to fundraise a large proportion of the costs, they might look after it better. But not in Ryrie Park.

Everything but the skate park.

Sep 02 17 08:14:04 pm

The proposed skateboard facility at Ryrie Park north I find rather distressing we have a very vocal minority calling for this development which is not in keeping with the Georgian square that is the centre of this town and gives it its distinct character. The park is busy enough at peak time with travellers and tourists and to be encouraging kids to cross Wallace street at that point going to and from a skate park is asking for a tragedy. The pool is past it's used by date any development of that area should take that into consideration before new things are added. It is not going to be very big so there will be more kids than space which will cause conflict and as the town grows

there is no room for it to grow. The healthiest kids in country towns are the ones that don't spend most of their time in the main street the Recreation ground needs life and a skate park there would be a start.

Comments With the best intentions, I feel that the consultants have tried to please everyone with very little context. There are many issue about these plans. Firstly, I think it is irresponsible to put out such ideas without any ability to fund them. Did the consultants know that there had already been a nasty and acrimonious debate about the skate park in Braidwood in recent year? The money was there for a decent park at the Rec Ground but the proponents only wanted a highly visible main street park. The majority of the community did not. Secondly, the $500,000 allocated to Braidwood’s ‘beautification’ (a clunky word if ever there was), should essentially be put into much needed maintenance of the main street, not the predominantly park based plan. Such a windfall grant comes irregularly, and much of the main street is in need of maintenance. Our magnificent granite gutters should be a major feature of the town, but they have been clogged, dirty and in need of repointing for decades. Our unsightly power lines, rather than being undergrounded, have been doubled in thickness in the last 12 months. Our pavements are appallingly dangerous and unsightly. We have no main street bubblers, tatty old bins, too few seats, no dog bag dispensers, and plenty of ugly signage which could easily be lessened with cleverly designed uniform signage. Money would also be better allocated to helping mainstreet businesses make their solar

Retail district upgrades to footpaths, street furniture, bubblers, granite gutters. lessening the impact of concrete blisters parking at the depot Many thanks for the opportunity to comment

panels less intrusive. Tourism and the visual appeal of Braidwood are key to the future prosperity of the town. The NSW Heritage Office spent over $500,000 on the listing of Braidwood. Those of us who lived through those months will remember the vigorous debate. Since 2006, the hysteria has simmered and many people have worked to continue to preserve important elements of our historic town. The two major elements of the Heritage Listing of ‘Braidwood & It’s Setting” are the Georgian grid and the preserved streetscapes. The Georgian grid is centred around the Park Lane precinct – the first thing you see as you enter town. The fact that the park is relatively “empty” at this point is a positive element. Visual space is important. Not all ‘voids’ need filling. The wonderful trees and space are heavily utilised by busloads of tourists and locals year around. However, the ugly murals on the 1960s Pool building have done nothing to add to the heritage ambiance of Braidwood and should be removed ASAP. Proper screening around the rest of the pool, rather than the aging hessian would also be a benefit. Park structures Ryrie Park South – The plan to ‘rethink’ the pathways as curvy is a waste of time and money. The park is based on the Georgian plan and straight pathways are appropriate. The brick memorial path is also only a few years old. A Water feature in the Park is a dumb idea and likely to be dangerous for small children and adolescents hanging out in the winter. Toilets The plan to demolish the Wilson Street toilet block seems a waste of money. The community lobbied for those toilets and they were deliberately placed with in the line of sight of

Page 75: Ordinary Meeting of Council - City of Queanbeyan...2018/02/28  · 2 Dhurga Rock information: Below is an information sheet that we prepared in late 2015, mainly for the use of Braidwood

the Police Station. I was once told that more sewerage went through those toilets in holiday times than the whole rest of town. They are closest to the street parking and should remain there. I would suggest that a better idea would be is to incorporate a new council run Visitors Information Centre at/besides the toilets where people easily park and can see the informative NPWS info panels. Bus Parking The plan to park coaches in the middle of town is an outrageous suggestion. No-one wants to take pictures of coaches. It would also negatively impact on many local businesses. I’m all for tourists but we are a working town and that is part of our charm. Parking up at Wilson Street is still convenient and off the main street. Defining the edges mid town Kerb and Guttering is best avoided to preserve the historic ambiance of the town. There may also be a problem for larger vehicles accessing businesses. Perhaps an different stone paving treatment might be better, complementing the granite guttering. Concrete Blisters The plans to soften the pedestrian crossing blisters is good but I doubt that parking motorcycles on the concrete would be OK with the RMS, and even the small trees may impact vision. Perhaps if the speed limit for trucks was lowered to 40km it might be OK. The Monument The half round about at the war monument is a good idea and the cobbled walkway to the courthouse may help to slow traffic entering town. However, I believe that there was no consultation with the Braidwood RSL sub-branch who have done much to upgrade this corner of the park. They might like to know and comment if a Memorial wall is being planned. Skate Park

There are inherent conflicts between visibility and visibility of a skate park/element. Braidwood is not just any town in NSW. It was the first full heritage listed town in NSW. One of the main reasons was the visible Georgian grid based abound Park Lane around Ryrie Park. Your first view of Ryrie Park as you enter Braidwood is Ryrie Park North, where the proposed skate park is illustrated as being situated. This is an affront to the hundreds of residents who have spent many volunteer hours fighting to preserve Braidwood. Aesthetics matter. The fact that the proponents of the Skate park wish it to be highly visible for safety reasons are at total odds with making a landscaped unobtrusive structure. The fact that there are well known safety issues with skate parks makes me wonder why we want one at all. Personally, I would choose not to stop in Braidwood at the park if there was a skate park there. The site is also opposite a pub making it even more inappropriate. The reason the proponents of the skate park dismissed the suitability of the Recreation Ground was that it was remote and no one would go there. However, subsequent to the upgrade of the BMX track in the far corner of the Rec Ground, they have claimed what a fabulous time they all had down there. The Rec Ground is for Recreation. Go Figure? There has been a substantial grant to upgrade all facilities at the Rec Ground including the Braidwood Life Centre and the planning involves getting more people to the site on a regular basis. The siting of the Skate elements at the Ryrie Park site is at odds with this long term planning. Note: Pool substructure – The north end of the Swimming pool is built up in rubble and any movement may compromise the pool structure. Adding skate elements and seating may be ill advised structurally.

Consultation It appears that there were very few people consulted by the Landscape Architects engaged to come up with this plan. For example, Braidwood and Villages Tourism Association, the major community organisation in Braidwood, were not given any opportunity to meet with the planners, contrary to the claims made by the main proponent that “everyone was consulted.” It is insulting to think that the many people who have volunteered to looking after Braidwood’s longterm future were not given an opportunity to meet with this company. It appears that this company has given undue weight to the very small group of proponents of the skate park. There are no more than a few handfuls of kids that skate along with their aging parents. On the flip side, there are large numbers of middle aged people who would benefit from a pool upgrade (in form and hours). These older resident would benefit substantially from such a facility – with significant health savings to the economy. Skate parks however have huge physical risks and cost the economy proportionally. I am all for a skate park in the right place. I am all for our youth being given places to play. Allegations against people who have questioned the suitability of the park location are insulting and unjust. But many vicious and insulting allegations have been made and many long standing residents have been reluctant to air their views in any forum for this reason. I also believe that the YourVoice online facility for commenting is flawed for Braidwood. The recent census noted that 20% of Braidwood does not have an internet connection and many, many more are not on Facebook so would not be aware of the debate.

I am concerned that Ryrie Park will be over-designed, with all the latest ideas in design and therefore in danger of looking like all other public parks, and losing the individuality that is special to this heritage town, and so valued by our visitors. We are replete with artists and designers in Braidwood, all with a strong sense of what this unique community is, so engaging a big city firm to do the design seems unfortunate to me. Ryrie Park south is very open and therefore great for the regular community markets, as well as gatherings formal and informal as do occur. The Dhurga Rock is a recent (2015) feature and designed for meetings for educational and healing purposes way into the future. It is very important that there remain open spaces in that area for this reason. It's not clear what the plan has for the Rock area, but the planting of exotics for example would be quite inappropriate. It's a pity that the Two Fires Committee who created this installation was not consulted.
