APRIL FOOLS’ DAY - The uncertain origins of a foolish day

Origin and History April Fools’ Day, sometimes called All Fools’ Day, is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar .

New Year’s Day Moves. Ancient cultures, including those of the Romans and Hindus, celebrated New Year’s Day on or around April 1. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.) In medieval times, much of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, as the beginning of the new year. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year’s Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year’s Day to Jan. 1. According to a

popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.

Constantine and KugelAnother explanation of the origins of April Fools’ Day was provided by Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University. He explained that the practice began during the reign of Constantine, when a group of court jesters and fools told the Roman emperor that they could do a better job of running the empire. Constantine, amused, allowed a jester named Kugel to be king for one day. Kugel passed an edict calling for absurdity on that day, and the custom became an annual event.“In a way,” explained Prof. Boskin, “it was a

very serious day. In those times fools were really wise men. It was the role of jesters to put things in perspective with humor.”This explanation was brought to the public’s attention in an Associated Press article printed by many newspapers in 1983. There was only one catch: Boskin made the whole thing up. It took a couple of weeks for the AP to realize that they’d been victims of an April Fools’ joke themselves.

Observances Around the WorldApril Fools’ Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a “fool’s errand,” looking for things that don’t exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things. The French call April 1 Poisson d’Avril, or “April Fish.” French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying “Poisson d’Avril” when the prank is discovered. www.infoplease.com - by David Johnson and Shmuel Ross

Easter or Pasqua is the second most important Italian holiday after Christmas. This holiday covers a long week end in Italy, with the additional Italian observance of Pasquetta (little Easter, also called Easter Monday) which according to tradition, you are free to celebrate as you wish. In fact, young people during this holiday tend to stay at a friend’s country home or spend a long weekend in another city with no parents at all. A famous Italian saying for this time of year is: “Natale con i tuoi, a Pasqua con chi vuoi.” (At Christmas with your parents, at Easter whomever you want). Visitors to Italy who are not spending time with friends may be interested to find that every city has their own traditions of note, and while you may not have friends and family to celebrate with, there are several ways to enjoy uniquely Italian traditions for Easter.

Easter foodSince Easter is the end of the Lent season, food plays a big part in the celebrations. Traditional Easter foods in many places include lamb or goat, artichokes, and special Easter breads that vary from region to region. Pannetone and Colomba (dove shaped) breads are often given as gifts as are hollow chocolate eggs that usually come with a surprise inside.

Good Friday and Easter Week Processions in ItalySolemn religious processions are held in

many towns on the Friday or Saturday before Easter and sometimes on Easter Sunday. Many churches have special statues of the Virgin and Jesus that play a big part in the processions. The statues may be paraded through the city or displayed in the main square. Parade participants are often dressed in traditional ancient costumes. Olive branches are often used instead of or along with palm fronds in the processions and to decorate churches.

Enna, in Sicily, has a large procession on Good Friday, with more than 2,000 friars dressed in ancient costumes walking through the streets of the city. Trapani, also in Sicily, is a good place to see processions, held several days during Holy Week. Their Good Friday procession, Misteri di Trapani, is 24 hours long. These processions are very dramatic. What’s believed to be the oldest Good Friday procession in Italy is in Chieti in the Abruzzo region (see Abruzzo Region Map). The procession with Selecchi’s Miserere played by 100 violins is very moving. Some towns, such as Montefalco and Gualdo Tadino in Umbria, hold live scenarios during the night of Good Friday or plays enacting the stations of the cross or Via Crucis and beautiful torch light processions are held in Umbria in hill towns such as Orvieto and Assisi. Read more about Good Friday and Easter in Umbria.

Florence - Scoppio del Carro

In Florence, Easter is celebrated with the Scoppio del Carro, explosion of the cart. A huge, decorated wagon is dragged through Florence by white oxen until it reaches Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence’s historic center. Following mass, the Archbishop sends a dove-shaped rocket into the cart, igniting the fireworks held in the cart. This spectacular display is followed by a parade in medieval costumes.

La Madonna Che Scappa in Piazza – Abruzzo Region Sulmona, in the Abruzzo region, celebrates Easter Sunday with La Madonna Che Scappa in Piazza. On Easter Sunday people dress in green and white, colors of peace, hope, and resurrection, and gather in the main piazza. The woman playing the Virgin Mary is dressed in black. As she moves to the fountain, doves are released and the woman is suddenly dressed in green. Music and feasting follow.

Holy Week on the island of Sardinia-The island of Sardinia is a part of Italy steeped in tradition and a good place to experience festivals and holidays. Because of its long association with Spain, some Easter traditions are strongly linked to the Spanish Semanta Santa. Here’s an inside look at Sardinian Holy Week rituals.Taken from Espresso – your daily dose of Italy and goitalyabout travel.com

ITALY’S EASTER MONDAY... LA PASQUETTA La Pasquetta is a perfect time to go outdoors and enjoy a relaxing picnic. The solemn processions and joyful Easter celebrations are over and Italians have enjoyed the wonderful feast that follows Mass on Easter Sunday! Before they return to work and their normal daily activities, there is one more holiday to celebrate. In an effort to have the joy of the season last just a little bit longer, Italians also celebrate La Pasquetta, or Little Easter. This spring tradition has evolved into an Italian national holiday for the Monday following Easter. The day has religious significance as well, although it is not a holy day of obligation. Italian Catholics sometimes refer to it as Lunedi dell’ Angelo, the Monday of the Angel, when the women of the sepulcher, including Mary Magdalene, were comforted by an angel when returning to Jesus’ tomb and found it empty. Up until the 19th century, the entire week following Easter was set aside as a time to kick back and relax. At some point, the weeklong respite was reduced to only one day. Family and friends often head to the great outdoors – to beaches, parks and mountains to revel in the sunshine and fresh breezes of spring. A picnic is the order of the day, with leftovers (avanzi) from Easter dinner. Family chefs can relax while picnickers feast on hard boiled eggs, various meats and cheeses, pizza piena (stuffed pizza), torta di pasta (baked pasta), olives and other delicacies. While many prefer to dine alfresco, it has become increasingly popular to dine at a favorite restaurant. Whatever the choice, it’s a day to relax, take a stroll, play games and celebrate spring. Taken from the Italian Tribune
