Ministry Needs & Opportunities

From Our Hands To Yours is a new Monterey ministry that

meets every two months to create handmade cards for those

who are sick, bereaved, and shut-ins. We want to reach out to

our family and beyond to let them know we care and that they

are important. We want to encourage anyone (children, families,

singles, college-age, teens, male, female...ANYONE!) to take part

in this ministry. All it requires is for you to show up and spend some time

making cards. ZERO skills required. We have the materials and easy to put

together kits. Come join us next Saturday, April 13th. For more information,

Backpack Fillers ends April 14th—Needed items are: Ramen noodles

(square packs, not Styrofoam), canned pastas and soups, and Vienna

sausages. For more information, contact [email protected].

Toothbrushes and toothpaste are being collected for an LCU medical

mission trip to Peru. Please put donations in the box at the Welcome

Center. Collection deadline is May 5th.

Open enrollment has begun at Sugar N Spice for the summer program

(June 4-July 11) and for the 2013-2014 school year. Kids, 6-weeks through 6th

grade, are welcome in the summer. Preschool for the school year is for children,

6-weeks through five years. Call Laura Bryan for more information at

795-8079, or visit our website at www.sugarnspicelubbock.com.

Concession window to soon be in place near the Teen Room! You will be

able to get your caffeine fix, alternative coffees, and even snacks. In the

meantime, you can currently buy beverages (only 50 cents) from the Teens at the

concession door before class. All proceeds go to youth scholarships.

April 7, 2013—Celebrating 50 Years!

Fifty years ago today, on Sunday, April 7, 1963, a new church was launched

with a worship assembly in a portable building at the corner of 58th & Memphis.

The birth of the Monterey church grew out of the dreams of a number of folks

from other churches in Lubbock to plant a church in southwest Lubbock. From

that small beginning in 1963, God has abundantly blessed this church! We have

experienced spiritual and numerical growth, and we have walked through

numerous transitions including a move to our current location in 2005. Because

of God’s grace, this church has made a difference in thousands of lives in

Lubbock, and around the world. Today, we celebrate those fifty years, and we

thank God for the privilege of being part of His story through this church.

While our past holds rich memories, I also believe that Monterey is positioned

for significant growth in the future. I included one of Paul’s prayers from

Ephesians in last week’s bulletin as we celebrated Easter Sunday. Another

prayer from that same letter is appropriate for today as we celebrate our past and

anticipate our future:

For this reason, I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family of

believers in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his

glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in

your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have

power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high

and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses

knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of

God Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or

imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory

in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and

ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:14-21

Second Annual Special Missions Contribution

During today’s assemblies, we will participate in our Second Annual Special

Missions Contribution—a tangible way for us to express our gratitude to God

and to share in kingdom work around the globe. Your participation in last year’s

Missions Contribution provided resources for Jim & Phyllis Beck’s transition to

Kenya and allowed us to expand our involvement in a number of places around

the globe including: Kenya, Rwanda, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, China, Haiti,

El Salvador, Mexico, Swaziland, Peru, and Cambodia.

The goal for today’s Missions Contribution is $110,000. This contribution will

enable us to provide support in the following areas of ministry beyond what our

annual Missions Budget includes:

• Support for Daniel Chengo and Stephen Thethe in Kenya.

• Monthly support for a Medical Clinic in Nine Poles (Kenya).

• Expansion of our Medical Missions Ministry.

• Leadership development for the church in Lazaro (Mexico).

• Continuation of support that began with last year’s Special Contribution

for Janese Davis (Nicaragua), Caleb & Jenny Beck (Rwanda), Jamie

Wheeler (Carpenter’s Church), and Olive Branch Ministries (Nicaragua &

Peru).

• Other potential opportunities here in Lubbock, in Swaziland, the Ukraine,

Rwanda and beyond…

All 4th & 5th graders are invited to attend the Livewires Retreat, April 12th-14th, at

Crossview Camp in Dickens, Texas. We will meet Friday at 5 p.m. and will return

TODAY. There is a limited number of spots—once we are full, we will not be able

Family Commitment is Sunday, April 28th. If you have had a baby between

April 1, 2012-March 31, 2013 you are invited to participate. Our “First Steps” Class

will be offered April 17th during Wednesday night Bible class. This class is

mandatory in order to participate in our Family Commitment Service on April 28th.
