Fall is fast approaching and with it comes the onset of autumn colors and aromas, the start of the new school year for area children, and so much more, signaling the familiar change of seasons. We at Community Education are also embracing change; our Business & Industry offices and training center have moved to the Community Education Center located at 1765 Ada Avenue in Muskegon to join the other CE programs.
You will find this new catalog is a combination of opportunities for three main programs in OV Community Education—Business and Vocational training, Adult Enrichment classes, and the Senior Program activities. Browse through each one to find what “tickles your fancy”!
In the business and vocational pages you’ll see that we continue to offer many of the same business software classes, as well as Certified Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide and the other medical classes which have been and continue to be key components of our trusted vocational training program. Employment in the health care field is booming and our experienced instructors can train you to be job ready in just a few weeks.
The center pages are bursting with many Adult Enrichment classes—from painting to pumpkins, snowmen to soap making, and so much more. Find a partner and join ballroom dance, or craft with your friends and family. So many things to get those creative juices flowing. You’ll find some new classes, like Dog Therapy Training and American Sign Language, along with our favorites. If you have ideas for other classes or an interest in teaching a class please give us a call.
Be sure to check out the pages of wonderful opportunities available for our seniors. The time-tested OV Senior Program is sure to have something to peak your interest. Come inside to enjoy an activity in the warmth of fellowship with other seniors as the days get cooler outside!

ACCESS
Access is a powerful, yet easy-to-use, database management program, designed to provide an efficient system for storing large amounts of data.
Level 1—Introduction
Spend some time getting familiar with the Access environment, working with the various tabs, commands, and features of the software. Begin developing a basic, yet useful database, including tables, queries, forms and reports.
Level 2—Intermediate
Continue learning more about the capabilities of the relationship database. Develop more powerful queries, filters, forms and reports, and learn more about table and object design.
Level 3—Advanced
Take your knowledge to the next level by building on your skills to create powerful, user-friendly databases. This level also includes an introduction to visual basic in Access, and the use of macros to customize and enhance your database program.
EXCEL
Learning how to use Microsoft Excel will make all your work with spreadsheets so much easier.
Level 1—Introduction
Navigating through the various tabs of the Ribbon can be daunting. We’ll spend time exploring the Excel interface so we can get up to speed quickly to create effective and efficient spreadsheets. We’ll learn basic concepts including formulas and functions, and several tools to make our job easier.
Level 2—Intermediate
Learn a variety of saving techniques within the Excel window, more advanced formulas, functions, and auditing tools. We’ll learn how to use tables and database concepts, as well as research, themes, and showing data using a variety of graphic tools.
Business Software Classes
All our Business Software courses are held in a classroom with a computer for each student Our instructors will introduce the concepts, show the techniques and provide practice activities to reinforce each of the concepts presented. Level 3—Advanced
This level is great for the Excel power-user. We’ll discover a variety of data analysis tools to make your job easier including scenarios, solver, pivot tables and pivot charts. We’ll dig into linking, using more powerful functions, and get introduced to the idea of macros.
Excel—Charting Do you need to develop easy-to-understand charts for your work, but don't have the time to take each of the Excel classes? This course may be just what you are looking for! You will learn to use all the great tools Excel has available to present your data professionally. Learn about the different types of charts and which is best suited to your data.
Excel 2007 for Business
This course is designed specifically for those who have a basic knowledge of Excel but need to do more in a work environment. Each of the four class sessions will move quickly through intermediate and into advanced techniques. Learn how to set up spreadsheets with formulas, use various formatting techniques, create charts. Continue to build your skills as we learn more powerful formulas and functions, how to manage large lists, combine worksheets and workbooks with linking formulas, and summarize data using various analyzing tools. We will use the text for Excel 2007, however, all the topics are completely suitable for Excel 2010 as well.

PUBLISHER
Microsoft Publisher is a powerful, yet easy to use, desktop publishing program. We offer 3 levels of Publisher training:
Level 1—Introduction
We will cover different features of the interface, give a brief overview of all the tabs in the ribbon, and discuss how to create new publications and use templates. We will also cover some more advanced text box customizations, give a brief introduction to Master Pages, and then discuss how to prepare a publication for printing.
Level 2—Intermediate
This level will cover how to use the different save features; package and publish a file; use advanced formatting and custom schemes; and work with shapes, tables, WordArt, and images. The student will be able to create a new publication from scratch, add and format tables and images, and prepare the publication for transfer using an electronic format.
Level 3—Advanced
This level will cover tools for making a publication consistent, ways to enhance existing fonts, and different types of Building Blocks. We will also cover mail, e-mail, and catalog merges; specialized tools such as the Graphics Manager and Design Checker; and terminology and tools used by commercial printers. Our goal is to create a consistent, correct, and attractive publication, from simple birthday invitations to multi-page product catalogs.
WORD
Microsoft Word makes word processing a breeze on your laptop or PC with many easy-to-use tools. We offer three levels of Microsoft Word.
Introduction
In this level we will cover different features of the interface, give a brief overview of all the tabs in the ribbon, and discuss printing and basic text formatting. By the end of the class, users should be comfortable creating, saving, and printing a new document, making it look professional and presentable.
Intermediate
Major topics include how to manage documents on your computer, working with templates, headers and footers, using the new Navigation Pane, and Mail Merge Wizard. Users will feel confident preparing more complex documents.
Advanced
This Advanced level is intended to help users who are already proficient with Word become more familiar with adding and manipulating various types of objects to their documents. This class will cover pictures, shapes, text boxes, WordArt, SmartArt, Building Blocks, Quick Parts, tables, and charts. (Schedule on the left.)

OUTLOOK
Managing our time is critical for any job and Outlook provides a number of tools to make time management easier. We’ll learn how to work with and organize our email, set appointments and schedule meetings with the calendar, manage our tasks and organize our contacts. POWERPOINT
Level 1—Introduction
We will cover the various features of the interface, create simple presentations and the basics of formatting. By the end of the class, users should be comfortable creating their own professional looking presentations and presenting their slide show.
Level 2—Advanced
This level is intended to help users understand some of PowerPoint’s more advanced features, such as customizing templates, handouts, and notes. We’ll also cover adding audio and video to a presentation; creating different types of masters and templates; reviewing a presentation; and creating advanced, custom, and shared shows.
PROJECT
Microsoft Project is a leading project management program, designed for use on a PC. We offer two levels of Project as described below. We invite you to contact our office to arrange a custom class for Project. 231-760-1960
Level 1—Introduction
We’ll take the student through planning a project, setting up the tasks, assigning resources, and monitoring costs, deadlines and constraints.
Level 2—Advanced
In this level we will add to the student’s knowledge of Project by learning to set baselines, update the project schedule, comparing progress to the baseline, report project information and much more.

COMPUTERS FOR
GOLDEN AGERS
Are you 50+ and feeling a bit out of touch with the tech-savvy youth? Join us and become more comfortable with your computer. Throughout the 4-weeks you will learn basic software skills using the word processor and spreadsheet programs. Explore the internet, set up an email account and merge information for labels or letters, in this fun computer class! It is helpful if you already know how to type.
Medical Skills Training
Become a Certified Nurse Aide or Home Health Aide and join the ranks of the growing and profitable health care industry! Employment opportunities have never been better for Nurse Aides and Home Health Aides.
Since 1990, all Nurse Aides and Home Health Aides must complete an approved training program to be eligible for employment. Students completing this program will be eligible and qualified to take the State Nurse Aide Competency Exam and Home Health Care Exam.
The Orchard View Community Education Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide course is an approved 200+ hour training program developed in cooperation with and endorsed by nursing home facilities and home health care agencies in the Muskegon area. It includes classroom lecture, laboratory work, and on-the-job clinical training in an area nursing home facility.

▫ Criminal background check ($10) must be completed in our office prior to enrollment.
▫ Two-step TB testing – can be done at doctor’s office – if tested at the Muskegon County Health Department the cost is about $17 for each test. Once class begins, other discounts may be available.
▫ Clinical Supplies refers to the required solid navy blue or solid white scrubs (no prints), and clean white tennis shoes needed by the 4th week of class.
▫ 50% of the tuition, plus materials, lab fees and textbooks must be paid at registration. The balance is due midway through the class (3 weeks).

in the Medical Office!
Can you picture yourself working in a medical office? Enjoy meeting people and serving others? The medical industry is growing, especially here in West Michigan. After completing the Medical Coding and Billing course, you will open up doors to find employment as a medical receptionist, a medical coder, a claims processor, a unit coordinator, an administrative medical assistant and more. During the 20 weeks of evening training, you will learn and review concepts in medical terminology and pharmacology, claims processing, HIPAA laws and regulations, billing and coding, anatomy and physiology, and general medical office administration. Wet-on-Wet Painting
Location: OVCEC Instructor: Pauline Stitt. No experience or talent required! Paint a complete professional oil painting in one night! Learn how to paint the “Wet-on-Wet” method popularized by Bob Ross and other television artists. Our experienced instructor will lead you step-by-step through this technique that makes it easy and fun to create your own masterpiece in one evening! Oil paints, canvas, and easel will be provided. Students will need to supply their own brushes or they can be purchased from the instructor on the night of class. No matter what your age, this class can help you discover your creativity. Wear old clothing. Samples of the finished projects are on display in the Community Education office. Brushes for all classes are 1” fan, small round, and liner. Beginning Photography Location: Room 12, OVCEC Instructor: Jim Beebe. Improve your holiday and vacation photos! This beginning class provides an introduction to the basics of digital photography including shutter priority, when to use a flash, memory cards, lenses, and camera accessories. We discuss close up shots, nature shots, sporting events and more. You will learn to email and retouch photos using Picasa, a free photo editing program. ARTS & CRAFTS BAZAAR The annual Arts and Crafts Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 16 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at Orchard View High School, which is located at 16 N. Quarterline Road. The fee for a space is $30.00. Anyone interested in participating as a vendor should contact the Senior Program office at 760-1493.

OIL PAINTING Discover the world of oil painting. For the beginner, step-by-step instruction in the use of brushes, mixing colors, value and composition. WATER COLOR Step-by-step instruction to create a beautiful landscape, water scene, still life or decorative painting of your choice from start to finish. Using not only the classical painting techniques, but incorporating into the class the dry-brush technique, the splatter technique and even the wet-in-wet technique to accomplish an even more unusual effect according to personal preference.
