Orapa mine hospital first participated in the COHSASA programme in 2000.The objective of COHSASA is to assist a range of healthcare facilities in Southern Africa to meet and maintain quality standards. This range includes hospitals, clinics, general and family practitioners, rehabilitation centres, hospices and laundries with standards being developed for many other services. Orapa mine hospital has since been accredited three times improving its scores in all the accreditations. Welcoming the participants during the celebrations, Orapa Hospital Superintendent, DR Hans Van Zyl said that Orapa mine hospital obtained re-accreditation after a lot of effort and hard work was put into place over a three year period to maintain the certification. “COHSASA Accreditation gives us assurance to our funders, stakeholders and the community at large of the high quality health standards that are met by our hospital, encompassing processes, patient safety and general quality care,” he said. Debswana recently launched its strategy, High Performance Organisation (HPO) 2018 with the mantra ‘Always ahead’ which calls for us to be aligned in ensuring that our services are indeed always ahead in this region and nationally.” Giving a keynote address, the General Manager of OLDM, Dr Adrian Gale said the service provided by Orapa Mine Hospital is of international standards. He said that the hospital is one of the only two health facilities currently fully accredited in the country. “The accreditation demonstrates to patients and other stakeholders, who are involved in making informed decisions about the competencies and ethics at the hospital, that they can have full trust and confidence that their health needs will be met professionally,” he said. He further said that the accreditation gives them confidence as Debswana management that the hospital is operated in such a manner that the quality of service and management is of an international level. He said such continued success is part of OLDM’s vision of “Orapa Today and Boteti Tomorrow and making Orapa a great place to work and live. He further said that the accreditation shows that the hospital has a well-defined mission with transparent objectives designed to meet best practice and outstanding professionalism. Dr Gale said that it was only through collective effort and support that Orapa Mine hospital is COHSASA accredited. For her part, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of COHSASA, Jacqueline Mary Stewart said that they are very satisfied with seeing Orapa Mine hospital take ownership of the COHSASA programme. She said external evaluation is what makes COHSASA credible with clients. Stewart said that they are accredited by the same body that accredits large bodies like the Joint Commission International of America and Accreditation Canada. She further said that although COHSASA seems to be focused in “Southern Africa,” they are continuing to make strides as they have spread their wings throughout Africa. She said Orapa mine Hospital is among a small group of 20 facilities that have achieved full accreditation five times. Giving a vote of thanks, Dr John Kiambuthi from Orapa Hospital lauded Dr Gale for being a true leader who inspired all the employees at OLDM. He said it is through his good leadership skills that such an achievement was made.
