For more than 125 years, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce has worked on behalf of businesses in Orange County and the Hud- son Valley. Our commitment is deep: the aver- age tenure of staff members is 16 years; President Dr. John A. D’Ambrosio has led this Chamber for nearly 30 years and is the senior Chamber ex- ecutive in New York State; in 2007, the Chamber constructed and moved into a new 20,000 SF fa- cility, complete with meeting rooms for members, as well as a Small Business Resource Center that provides free SCORE counseling, as well as a new Entrepreneurial Assistance Program funded by a grant from New York State. We also offer two re- volving loan funds for small businesses. Partnering with Greenopia, a national leader in green-rat- ed brands and services, and the local community college, the Chamber makes it possible for mem- bers to receive certification as sustainable and to be promoted as such. The Chamber is a key partner with the 105th Air National Guard and MAG-49 Marines units stationed at Stewart International Airport in Orange County. Every three years, the Cham- ber leads the business community in hosting a Military Appreciation Picnic for 6,000 ANG and Marines servicemen and women and their families. The Chamber also coordinates an an- nual Civic Leaders Tour in conjunction with the 105th ANG, bringing local business and commu- nity leaders to key military installations around the country to enhance their understanding of our military. Advocacy for business-friendly legislation has been a key element in the Chamber’s program of work for many years, but never more so than re- cently as we’ve all faced difficult economic times and growing anti-business policies from Albany. Recognizing the business community’s need for pro-active government relations, two staff mem- bers are registered as NYS lobbyists. Supported by an active Government Initiatives Committee, the Chamber is front and center on all issues that affect the business community. We are an active participant in all of The Business Council’s e-ad- vocacy programs. For 18 years, the Chamber has hosted the re- gion’s largest business-to-business trade show, in recent years donating the admission profits to lo- cal charities. For more than a decade, we have partnered with the Orange County United Way to present the county’s largest golf outing, again donating some of the proceeds to local non-profit organizations. Another key Chamber partnership is with the local daily newspaper, which publishes the Cham- ber’s monthly newsletter, The Business View- point. With a circulation of more than 80,000, the publication provides extraordinary promotion for member businesses. We’re addressing the needs of younger busi- nessmen and women through our dynamic Young Professionals group. These YPs have been very active in developing a successful workshop series on social media and its implications in to- day’s business world. The key message to our members is, “Working together, we will succeed.” Recognizing that dif- ficult times often bring out the best in people, it has been the Orange County Chamber’s mission to help our members look beyond the difficulties and focus on the new possibilities for success on the other side. More than 60 chambers throughout the state were consid-ered for awards. Congratulations to The Rockland Business Association and the Livingston County Chamber for also being selected. What follows is the description of the Orange County Chamber submit-ted for the awards program.)

For more than 125 years, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce has worked on behalf of businesses in Orange County and the Hud-son Valley. Our commitment is deep: the aver-age tenure of staff members is 16 years; President Dr. John A. D’Ambrosio has led this Chamber for nearly 30 years and is the senior Chamber ex-ecutive in New York State; in 2007, the Chamber constructed and moved into a new 20,000 SF fa-cility, complete with meeting rooms for members, as well as a Small Business Resource Center that provides free SCORE counseling, as well as a new Entrepreneurial Assistance Program funded by a grant from New York State. We also offer two re-volving loan funds for small businesses.

The above -- and more -- enable the Orange County Chamber to consistently deliver excep-tional programs and services not only to our

members, but to the community in general. Part-nerships with other organizations are vital to the Chamber’s mission, and the results of these al-liances have distinguished the Orange County Chamber locally, statewide and nationally.

Recognizing that businesses want to be en-vironmentally-conscious, the Chamber recent-ly launched a program that enables members to become certified as sustainable. Partnering with Greenopia, a national leader in green-rat-ed brands and services, and the local community college, the Chamber makes it possible for mem-bers to receive certification as sustainable and to be promoted as such.

Chairman’s messageIt’s hard to believe that a year has passed since

I was given the honor of being Chairman of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. So

much has happened since then and I wanted to take the time to say a few special thanks. First, and foremost, to Dave Cocks, who as Chair-Elect has done a su-perb job working together along with me to make sure that the Chamber contin-

ues to excel in helping bridge the gap between scarce resources and ample opportunities for our businesses and communities. Likewise, we are truly fortunate to have such a dynamic and diverse board of directors who really get “it” and repeatedly step up to the tee to provide insight, guidance and support. Of course, none of the great things this Chamber is able to accomplish

would be possible without our fearless leader, Dr. John, and his incredible staff of honorable, dedicated and talented individuals.

I also wanted to thank those individuals who reached out to me and helped me better un-derstand what our businesses and communities need and want. Through various tours, meetings and private conversations, I hopefully have ar-rived at a place where I am more knowledgeable about our collective needs than when I first be-came Chairman. Thank you all for the profes-sional and personal growth I have experienced over the course of this last year. I look forward to our continual growth and development as my second year as Chairman commences and ask that you continue to work beside me as we pol-ish the jewel we all call Orange County.

October 2010 The Business Viewpoint 3

A message about your BoardI’m delighted this

month to welcome six new people to our Board of Directors. And while I’m thrilled that Susan Crocker (Holbert’s Catering/BackYard Bistro), Ke-nya Gipson (Clear Channel Radio), Nick Illobre (KnappQuest HR), Dr. Michelle Koury (Crystal Run Healthcare), Karen Miller (Frontier Com-munications) and Lisa Montanaro (LM Organizing Solutions) will be coming on board, I’m saddened that we’re saying goodbye to six other great directors.

Derek Benedict (Time Warner Cable), Mike Smith (Elant, Inc.), Bill Sivillo (Captain’s Club Cruises and Tours) and Sharon Warantz ( Jellybean Promotions) are leaving the Board because of term limits and all have been an inspiration not only to me, but to so many members they’ve helped through their years of ser-

vice on so many commit-tees and projects.

Marc Devitt (Winding Hills Golf Club and Res-taurant) has become such a powerhouse in the local business community that he feels that he can’t de-vote the time necessary to be a Board member and has graciously resigned, and Christine Regan-Lake (Redlake, Inc.) will

be moving out of the area with her family. Derek, Mike, Bill, Sharon, Marc and

Christine: thank you for everything. I know that none of you will be strangers to the Chamber (even if you’re living in Ari-zona!). I look forward to seeing many of you at our events and out in the communi-ty. You’re such a credit to this organization. And you’ve all made us better because of your involvement.

New Members O&R presents money-saving program“It’s definitely going to save you money.”

That’s how one businessman described Orange & Rockland’s latest energy-saving program for its eligible small commercial electric customers.

The new program features financial incen-tives for small businesses to make energy-sav-ing improvements that are designed to help those customers both save money and become more competitive by using less energy.

Learn more about this new program at a special breakfast meeting to be held from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on October 29 at the Or-ange County Chamber of Commerce Busi-ness Center at 30 Scott’s Corners Drive in Montgomery.

Under the new program, O&R performs a free energy audit and will pay 70 percent of the cost of new energy-savings equipment recommended by the audit. That includes new state-of-the-art lighting fixtures and bulbs, programmable thermostats, occupancy sen-sors and other energy-savings measures. Those energy-savings measures result in lower bills.

Benefits from O&R’s $9-million program are available to all qualified O&R New York small business customers using a monthly peak demand of less than 100 kW. Since the

program’s inception in November 2009, free energy efficiency audits have been conducted at over 640 small businesses. As a result of those audits, about 45 percent have completed the installation of energy efficiency measures, lowered their energy bills and have become more competitive in today’s market place.

In one case, the site energy audit estimat-ed a 20 percent reduction in electricity usage per month and a payback of eight months, but it looks like it will be six months or less. This customer’s May bill was $200 less than last May’s.

The program is administered by O&R in coordination with its implementation contractor Willdan Energy Solutions, one of the nation’s preeminent providers of spe-cialized energy services. It is expected to run through the end of 2011 or until the $9 mil-lion in funding runs out. Customer partici-pation is on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information or to set up an ap-pointment, small business customers should contact O&R’s contractor Willdan Energy Solutions at 1-888-WILLDAN, O&R’s Program Administrator Robert Melvin at 877-852-5678 or visit www.oru.com/Small-CI.

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s recent “Hol-lywood on the Hudson” gala raised more than $200,000 and honored five distinguished local in-dividuals: Richard Drake, Wilbur Higgins, Harold Kahn, David Marks and Richard O’Beirne. The gala is one of the largest fundraising events in the Hudson Valley, attracting more than 500 guests each year. In other SLCH news, the hospital’s cancer program has received a commendation on their triannual Accreditation from the Commis-sion of Cancer of the American College of Sur-geons. Accreditation by the CoC is given only to facilities voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of cancer care and that have under-gone a rigorous evaluation process. The Littman Cancer Center recently benefited from the Second Annual Lap 4 Life Run/Walk, as well as the first “All American Muscle and Classic Car Show.” Dr. Scot Hill has been appointed Medical Direc-tor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Michael Smith and Dr. Kelly Stets have have joined the medical staff. Recent Stars of the Month include Accounts Payable Associate Patricia Goodman of Newburgh and Microbiol-ogy Supervisor Lynnette Ketcham of Pine Bush.

The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center, already one of Newburgh’s largest em-ployers, has created and filled 30 new jobs in the past six months alone. During the next two years, the center anticipates adding 20 additional posi-tions in the health professions, patient services,

information technology, facilities maintenance and health care administration. The center’s Chief of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Avi Silber, has been appointed a Clinical Assis-tant Professor of Pediatrics by New York Medi-cal College. The center welcomes any person currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer in Orange and Rockland Counties to apply for a medical Gap Grant. Topics will include how viruses, spyware and hackers get access to your computers and what steps you can take to protect them. Threats originate from e-mail, web pages, thumb drives and even through the Internet when you are doing nothing. If you ever wondered about how safe your e-mail is, what to do when that pop-up window appears or if your computer is running slow because of a virus, then this seminar is for you.
