~ Oregon Labor Oral History Program

sponsored by Pacific NW Labor History Assn.

~~~ For whom this history is told ~
- For those who have lived that history, tribute to what they've faced and what they have achieved. - For their families, that the values they've sought to live by may more surely enter, and endure through, coming generations. - For unions, providing the greater understanding and wiser choices that come with historical perspective. - For publicists and activists to enlighten and stimulate our communities with lessons from the challenges of the past. - For students, in their search for truth in the fuller realities of life in society, and for ideals worth living by. - For historians - for that complete "History of Labor in the Pacific Northwest" yet to be written.
Capturing our labor history live: oral history project in motion ~ the Oregon story.
Recording in full the personal recollections of sisters and brothers who have ‘been through it, and seen it all’ – how better could you preserve the collective history of labor unions and life in the workplace? Back in the mid-1980s, AFL-CIO's Nellie Fox Edwards began interviewing union friends and colleagues. The tapes ended up at the Oregon Historical Society, becoming part of an oral history collection that aimed to include ‘Labor’ as a subject of major focus. This vital work of preservation is now being carried forward by participants in the Oregon Labor Oral History Program, in affiliation with the Pacific Northwest Labor History Association - PNLHA, sponsor of the annual history conferences in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. A new form of sponsorship materialized in 2010 with the decision of ATU 757 to create an ongoing oral history fund through a monthly per capita contribution by ATU members. In the past two years this fund has underwritten four substantial oral histories by Portland State University student interviewers. In addition to course credit and benefit of personal enlightenment, each received a stipend of $500. The ATU project in its second year began reaching out to other organizations, sponsoring interviews with Mike Gutwig, editor of "Northwest Labor Press" and AFSCME leader Mary Botkin.
How they've done it in Iowa ~ The properly established oral history program - permanent, secure, maximally productive - without a major source of steady funding is a 'pipe dream.' In Iowa the dream has became a true reality. The Iowa Federation of Labor in 1954 started an interviewing program that in following years recorded over 1,100 interviews. Full-swing operation dates from 1977 when the IFL in convention voted to levy a two-cent monthly per capita charge on its members. By 1992 a total of $196,000 had been raised from this source, plus special contributions from the U.A.W. and Teamsters. Sen. Tom Harkin secured in addition a $360,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to transcribe and index the growing collection of histories. Today the Iowa program enjoys official support from the Iowa Federation of Labor and operates in direct connection with the University of Iowa Labor Center. Its oral histories are on deposit at the Iowa State Historical Society, which also acts as primary archive for records of labor organizations. The current situation in Oregon has all the makings of a similar success story.
