come to API, instead. He wasn’t there long before

Audie encouraged him to go toclasses leading to certificationas a welding inspector andturned that part of the businessover to him.

Sometimes the company hasas many as 30 welders seekingcertification in one day.

Certification is required be-fore a welder can work on apipeline.

“It (welding) has to be right,”Price said.

API is a certified test facilityfor the state of Oklahoma andfor many gas companies thatdo work in Oklahoma.

“One reason for the suc-cess of our company is that wehire qualified inspection per-sonnel,” Price said. “Our in-spectors are experienced in thefield and we have many certi-fied inspectors on staff for spe-cific types of jobs.

A multi-talented guy,Charles Walker also is thecompany’s computer guru, keeping the computer systemup and humming.

The business has boomed, billing $35 million last year, while doing business in fourstates, Oklahoma, West Vir-ginia, Pennsylvania and Texas. They have also worked in Ar-kansas and Kansas.

Price has offers from com-panies in other states to work, but limits his activity to the thesestates.

His business is as big as hewants it to be.

WELDING CHECK – Audie Price, left, API president andCharlie Walker, welding inspection director, inspect weldsproduced by a welder seeking certification to work on gas lines.

Price comments that he hasnever aggressively pursuedtesting business.

He refers to it as “hustling”business.

He made lots of friends inthe business and that’s how thebusiness came to him.

Gas companies want quali-fied experience to be sureprojects are done properly.

Price first began working forMorris Farrar of Morris Con-struction Co. some 25 years ago, working in the summers.

He learned to weld by help-ing older welders.

He operated a service sta-tion his first year out of highschool, then got back into weld-ing.

Brenda Price was a musicteacher in Dover and Crescent

schools before retiring early atAudie’s request, to help himwith the growing business.

Oil and gas pipelines fallunder the governance of theOklahoma Department ofTransportation’s pipeline safetydivision.

The book work is huge.Price observed that early day

pipeline inspectors would belost today because of the vol-ume of documentation re-quired, most of it done withcomputers.

“You do a little bitty job andyou’ve got binders and bindersof documentation,” he said.

For a single job, the com-pany may need to send a chiefinspector, assistant chief in-spector, certified welding in-spector and maybe two more

under him.Safety is the overriding fac-

tor on every job.Price has purchased prop-

erty alongside U.S. 81 north ofKingfisher to build a new officebuilding and shop. He hopes tobe in it by the end of next year.

“I want it to be large enoughto have a conference room thatwill hold 40 people; we don’thave space here big enough toeasily get all of our personnel into discuss a job. There arechanges in regulations regularlyand it’s hard to find a place toget them altogether here to talkabout it.”

The Prices started the book-keeping operation of their busi-ness in one room in their home.

Then, they had to have abookkeeper working in anotherroom.

They then added an officebuilding behind their home, which had a storage room. Thestorage room quickly had thelawn equipment planned for itmoved out so it could be con-verted into office space.

Now the office area, whichhas become known as the“bunkhouse” because of itslength and western appearance,is too small.

Incidentally Charles Walkerand his dad, Ronnie Walker, built the original office.

Brenda Price is looking for-ward to the construction of anoff-premises office.

She thinks she may not findherself working there as manySunday afternoons as she doesnow with the office right be-hind the house.
