How Does It Work?

Did You Know? that the lamp purchase represents only a smallfraction of the overall Cost of Light. In fact the cost of the lamp canbe as little as 4% of the total cost of light. Labour costs account fora similar amount, or more. But the main cost of light is electricity -between 75% and 88% of your final annual bill!

Because conventional lamps need a higher wattage to achieverequired lighting levels, they use much more electricity than lowenergy equivalents.

They also incur other avoidable costs that you may never haveconsidered. For example, a standard incandescent lamp needsreplacement, on average, after only 1000 hours. So more lampsare needed more often, more labour is necessary to fit them, andthere is more expense disposing of the old ones.

Reduce labour costs with plannedmaintenance/group relamping

Schedule your lighting maintenance instead of simply waiting forlamps to fail!

In any large installation, failure rates increase with age in apredictable way.

The optimal point for group re-lamping is typically when 8% to 12%of lamps have failed, usually around two-thirds of rated life. At thispoint, both lumen output and lamp colour may have deteriorated,yet the cost of electricity remains at “full price.”

The per-lamp labour cost of installing new lamps is usuallysignificantly less when an entire site is re-lamped, compared to theper-lamp labour cost of replacing lamps one at a time.

The result? The facility gets a face-lift and the maintenance costsover the next two or three years are generally significantlyreduced.

Energy LabelAccording to EU Directive 92/75/EEC,household lamps operated on main voltage(incandescent lamps and fluorescent lampswith integrated control gear) and householdfluorescent lamps (including single anddouble-ended lamps without integrated controlgear) must be marked on their packaging withan energy label indicating their energyefficiency.The light sources are classified in energyefficiency classesA (very efficient) to G (inefficient).

Glossary Of Terms

Beam Angle

The angular dimension of the cone of light from the reflectorized lamps (suchas R and PAR types) encompassing the central part of the beam out of theangle where the intensity is 50% of maximum. The beam angle sometimescalled the "beam spread" is often part of the ordering code of reflectorizedlamps.

Candela (cd)

The international unit (SI) of luminous intensity. The term has been retainedfrom the early days of lighting when a standard candle of a fixed size andcomposition was used as a basis for evaluating the intensity of other lightsources

Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

An international system used to rate a lamp's ability to render object colours.The higher the CR (based upon a 0-100 scale), the better colours appear. CRIratings of various lamps may be compared, but a numerical comparison isonly valid if the lamps are also rated for the same chromaticity. (SeeChromaticity). CRI differences among lamps are not usually significant (visibleto the eye) unless the difference is more than three to five points.

Dimmable

Whether or not the lamp lumens can be varied while maintaining reliability.

Fluorescent Lamp

A high efficiency lamp using an electric discharge through low pressuremercury vapour to produce ultra-violet (UV) energy. The UV excites phosphormaterials applied as a thin layer on the inside of a glass tube which makes upthe structure of the lamp. The phosphors transform the UV to invisible light.

Halogen Lamp

A short name for the tungsten-halogen lamp. Halogen lamps are highpressure incandescent lamps containing halogen gases such as iodine orbromine, which allow the filaments to be operated at higher temperatures andhigher efficacies. A higher temperature chemical reaction involving tungstenand the halogen gas recycles evaporated particles of tungsten back onto thefilament surface.

Incandescent Lamp

A light source which generates light using a thin filament wire (usuallytungsten) heated to white heat by an electric current passing through it.

Kilowatt Hour (kwh)

The standard measure of electrical energy and the typical billing unit used byelectrical utilities for electricity. A 100-watt lamp operated for 10 hoursconsumes 1000 watt-hours (100*10) or 1 kilowatt-hour. If the utility charges$.10/kWh, then the electricity cost for the 10 hours of operation would then be10 cents (1*$.10).

Lamp

The term used to refer to the complete light source package including theinner parts as well as the outer bulb or tube. "Lamp," of course, is alsocommonly used to refer to the type of small light fixture such as a table lamp.

Lamp Description

The lamp's identification code. For Projection lamps, this is a 3-letter-numbercode uniquely identifying the lamp for ordering purposes. In some instances,lamps with 3-letter (ANSI) codes are offered in more than one design voltage,in which case the voltage required should also be specified when ordering.Some Projection Lamps have an ordering code comprising of two or more 3-letter ANSI codes - such as EM/EKS and DYS/DYV/BHC. The first code is theANSI code, the secondary codes identify which lamp the multiple-coded lampcan directly replace. Only the first code appears on the lamp itself.

Light

Radiant energy which can be sensed or seen by the human eye. Visible lightis measured in lumens.

[Average Rated] Life

The median time it takes for a lamp to burn out. For example, a 60-watt SoftWhite Bulb can be expected, on average, to burn for 1,000 hours. Based uponcontinuous testing of lamps in laboratories, the 1,000 hour rating is the point intime when 50% of the test samples have burned out and 50% are still burning.Unless otherwise noted Fluorescent and CFL life assumes 3 hours averageoperating time per start. Unless otherwise noted HID life assumes 10 hoursaverage operating time per start

Lumen

The international (SI) unit of luminous flux or quantity of light. For example, adinner candle provides about 12 lumens. A 60-Watt Soft White incandescentlamp provides 840 lumens.

Lumen Maintenance

A measure of how well a lamp maintains its lamp output as it ages. Lumenmaintenance is usually provided as a curve.

Lumen Per Watt (lpw)

A measure of the efficiency, or, more properly, "efficacy" of a light source.Efficacy is easily calculated by taking the lumen output of a lamp and dividingby the lamp watts. For example, a 100-watt producing 1750 lumens has anefficacy of 17.5 lumens per watt.

Luminous Efficacy

The light output of a light source divided by the total power input to thatsource. It is expressed in lumens per watt.

Mean Lumens

The average light output of a lamp over its rated life. For fluorescent andmetal halide lamps, mean lumen ratings are measured at 40% or rated lamplife. For mercury, high-pressure sodium and incandescent lamps, mean lumenratings are measured at 50% of rated lamp life.

Mercury Lamp

A high-intensity discharge light source in which the light is produced by theradiation from mercury, plus halides of metals such as sodium, scandium,indium and dysprosium. Some lamp types may also use phosphor coatings.

PAR Lamp

PAR is an acronym for a parabolic aluminized reflector. A PAR lamp, whichmay use either an incandescent filament, a halogen filament tube or HID arctube is a precision pressed-glass reflector lamp. PAR lamps rely on both theinternal reflector and prisms in the lens for the control of the light beam.

Phosphor

An inorganic chemical compound processed into a powder and deposited onthe inner glass surface of fluorescent tubes and some mercury and metal-halide lamp bulbs. Phosphors are designed to absorb short wavelengthultraviolet radiation and to transform and emit it as visible light.

Watt

A unit of electrical power. Lamps are rated in watts to indicate their powerconsumption. Power consumed over time equals the electrical energy used.

LEDAn LED lamp (or LED light bulb) is a solid-state lamp that uses light-emittingdiodes (LEDs) as the source of light. LED lamps offer long service life andhigh energy efficiency, but initial costs are higher than those of fluorescentand incandescent lamps. Chemical decomposition of LED chips reducesluminous flux over life cycle as with conventional lamps.

Efficacy of LED devices continues to improve, with some chips able to emitmore than 100 lumens per watt. LEDs do not emit light in all directions, andtheir directional characteristics affect the design of lamps. The efficacy ofconversion from electric power to light is generally higher than forincandescent lamps. Since the light output of many types of light-emittingdiodes is small compared to incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps, inmost applications multiple diodes are assembled.

LEDs are degraded or damaged by operating at high temperatures, so LEDlamps typically include heat dissipation elements such as heat sinks andcooling fins.

HALOGEN

A halogen lamp, also known as a tungsten halogen lamp or quartz iodinelamp, is an incandescent lamp that has a small amount of a halogen such asiodine or bromine added.

The combination of the halogen gas and the tungsten filament produces ahalogen cycle chemical reaction which redeposits evaporated tungsten backonto the filament, increasing its life and maintaining the clarity of the envelope.

Because of this, a halogen lamp can be operated at a higher temperaturethan a standard gas-filled lamp of similar power and operating life, producinglight of a higher luminous efficacy and colour temperature.

Higher efficiency versions using infrared reflective coating (IRC) technologyare 40% more efficient than standard low voltage halogen lamps.

FLUORESCENTA fluorescent lamp, fluorescent tube or compact fluorescent lamp is a very lowpressure mercury-vapour gas-discharge lamp that uses a fluorescence toproduce visible light. The electric current (in the gas) excites mercury vapourwhich produce short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor tofluoresce, producing visible light. A fluorescent lamp converts electrical powerinto useful light much more efficiently than incandescent lamps.

For fluorescent tubes where a starter is required it is recommended that thestarter be replaced every time a tube is changed.

Fluorescent Tubes are available in all shapes and sizes. New slimmer T5tubes are more efficient producing similar or higher light output than those ofthe equivalent T8 diameter tubes but use less electrical power. They do notrequire a separate starter as they operate on electronic ballast.
