Scanning the hard drive for errors

Over time files can become corrupt or cross linked (two files sharing the same hard drive space). Checking for file errors is a practice to do at least once every two months. Make sure all applications are close and the screen saver is turn off before proceeding

open My Computerright click on hard drive Cselect Propertiesclick the Tools tab along the top of the Properties pageclick Check Now buttonSelect Automatically fix file system errors (box beside it should have an “x” in it)click Start

this process should take about 5-10 minutes to complete

Disk Defragmenter

The deletion, installation of applications and creation of files can caused the file structure on the hard drive to become unorganized. As with any filing system, they must be organized for quick retrieval. Performing a disk defragment every month can greatly improve system performance. Make sure all applications and the screen saver is turned off before proceeding

click startselect program filesselect accessoriesselect system toolsselect Disk Defragmenterclick start Note: this process could take up to one hour to complete depending on when it was last done or how many files or applications were installed and deleted since the last time it was run.
