As the name implies, 2020 has to be a good year for clear vision.

Much has happened at Redstart Birding in the past 12 months. We lost one of our founders in a brief but val-iant battle against pancreatic cancer, and the other to the business development branch of Swarovski Optik. We wor-ried for a moment that the Bill-and-Ben-sized holes they le behind would be too great to ll; happily, the ghting spirit of Redstart has proven us wrong. Under the leader-ship of top-notch management squad Angela Anderson-Beach and Raymond VanBuskirk, our little optics hustle has met its goals and exceeded expecta-tions throughout this past year. Although we’ve recently added a few new faces to Redstart Birding and Bird Watcher’s Digest, our dedica-tion to connecting you with the best binoculars, spotting scopes, and accessories to t your birding needs remains unchanged. Whether you call our home o ce (at 1-833-262-1568), shoot us an email (to [email protected]), connect with us through our website (that’s redstartbirding.com, if you missed it), or catch

up with us at a birding festival, you can rest assured that our crew wants to make sure that you get great optics and gear you’ll love. Speaking of optics and gear, this catalog-of-sorts that you’re holding right now features the bulk of our current o erings in the binoculars, scopes, and accessories depart-ments. Within these pages, you’ll nd general product data, technical speci cations, pricing information, and even a few product reviews shared by birders like you. We’ve also included a few in-depth re-views of some major models, just in case you need a little extra convincing to take the plunge and invest in optics that will help you level up your birding game. If you have any questions or are ready to make 2020 your birdiest year yet with a new scope or binocular, please reach out to our team! Also, we would be remiss if we didn’t thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support as Redstart Birding continues to grow, expand, and change for the better. Cheers!

Ask Vortex owners why they love their optics, and they’re likely to tell you that not only do they love the birding experience a orded to them by their optics and the securi-ty that comes with Vortex’s no-fault lifetime warranty, but they’ll also probably mention the accessibility and approachability of the brand: ere’s literally a binocular and price range for everyone—beginner or expert, young or old, inexpen-sive or top-tier.

During the summer of 2019, Vortex rolled out an exciting new binocular, the Razor UHD. Ad-ditionally, the beloved Diamond-back and Cross re models got an overhaul and are now being called the Diamondback HD and the Cross re HD, respectively.

Perhaps the most notable of these summer announcements is the addition of the Razor UHD binocular to the Vortex family. is product, however, won’t replace the well-known Razor HD, so, if you’re a Razor HD fan, Vortex still has you covered. e UHD is the company’s rst foray into the land of high-end optics and is said to deliver image quality comparable to that of high-end European and

Japanese brands but at a better value. With a going price starting at $1,449.99 for the 8x42 model, it’s worth your consideration.

So, what gives the UHD the extra punch that propels them to their top-tier status? e secret is in a more e cient Abbe-Koening prism. When light passes through the new prism system, it takes a simpler optical path than before and eliminates the need for both re- ective and phase-corrective coat-ings, resulting in a much higher light-transmission rate. is will help you discern detail more easily, especially in the low-light situations we encounter during early morning and evening birding excursions.

Chromatic aberration is also sig-ni cantly reduced in the UHD, and thus resolution, contrast, and color delity are greatly improved. In addition to the prism changes, the UHDs sport top-of-the-line lens coatings and a durable magnesium chassis, making them both rugged and lightweight.

e Razor UHD wasn’t the only binocular to get a new prism; in fact, the new Diamondback HD binocular has a completely over-hauled optical design. It now in-

corporates HD glass, a new prism, and added phase-corrective and dielectric coatings that make the new Diamondback HD binoculars perform more like binoculars in the $400-plus price class for a little more than $200. From an optical standpoint, they are nearly as good as the Viper HD, boasting quite similar specs at a more a ordable price. Sure, they may not be as rugged, but they’re covered by the Vortex VIP no-fault warranty.

A er a morning of birding with them, I was thoroughly impressed, especially considering the price. Weighing in at 1.3 pounds, the 8x42 model is quite easy to use for long periods, and the rubber armoring makes them easy to hold and pleas-ing to the touch. Optically speak-ing, they’re bright and clear, provid-ing an image that’s surely worth more than their price tag suggests. eir eld of view is comparable to other binoculars in the same class and made nding birds, even in dense riparian vegetation, a non-issue. A ve-foot close focus makes switching between birds and bugs a breeze—and believe me, we’ve got some stunning insects out here in New Mexico! I’ll bet you do in your neck of the woods, too.

Looking more closely at the image, it begins to degrade a bit near the outer edge of the eld, but it is certainly not noticeable unless you’re looking for it, and remember: You can’t have it all at such an a ordable price. I can’t see this detail posing any problems for

birding. How o en do we place our subject at the edge of the image? In the best-case scenario, never.

Here’s the takeaway: All of the optical improvements are well executed, and you’ll get more out of the Diamondbacks than ever before, for the same great price. It’s hard to beat that kind of value. If you already have a high-end binocular, you might consider this as an inexpensive backup to leave under the front seat of your car for that chance bird encounter.

e new Cross re HDs have nearly the same optical design as the Diamondback HD, minus the prism coatings, which makes it a good step up from the previous generation, though not quite as crisp and sharp as the Diamond-back HD. ey’re slightly heavier, though I didn’t notice it much in the eld. Additionally, their chas-sis is made from polycarbonate plastic, making them less resistant to regular drops and unavoidable bino abuse. When using the Cross- re HD and the Diamondback HD side-by-side, there’s really no contest: e Diamondback HD is clearly superior. So, if the ques-tion is whether to buy the Cross re HD or the Diamondback HD, treat yourself and go with the Diamond-back. For only $80 to $100 more, the Diamondback HDs are well worth the price. With that said, the Cross- re HD is a great rst binocular for a teen birder and would be handy to just have around the house or to share on a bird walk.

6.5x32 binocular o ers an un-compromising alternative with undeniable performance. With slightly reduced magni cation, the 6.5x32 provides better image stability (showing less e ect of hand shake) and provides one of the widest eld of views of any bin-ocular in the entire industry at an incredible 525 feet at 1,000 yards; an unparalleled 10 degree angular FOV! e 32mm line is also avail-able in more traditional 8x32 and 10x32 models for those wanting a bit more magni cation. e 8x32 provides an equally impressive 462 feet wide eld of view at 1,000 yards distance (8.8 degrees), and the 10x32 BDII-XD comes in at 351 feet at 1,000 yards (6.7 degrees). At some point during fall migra-tion, I’ll find myself visiting the lakes around Madison, Wisconsin, search-ing for a red-throated or Pacific loon among the common loons. These less-common loons can present an identification challenge under any circumstances (particularly when they are in their nonbreeding plum-age). Given that they are generally floating 100 yards or more offshore, most birders using just binoculars will feel under-equipped as they try to make out subtle plumage varia-tions on the back of the neck or to detect a slight upturn in a bird’s bill. This situation exemplifies one of the many occasions when I find a spotting scope to be indispensable. Mounted on a tripod, a scope can be used hands-free, which allows me to have a field guide in hand for refreshing my knowledge of field marks. Most important, though, the scope will provide me with much more detailed views of the bird, with the aid of significantly more magni-fication (up to 7x more). A spotting scope can turn a frustrating situation into an observational delight.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?I’m assuming the fine folks at

Zeiss felt the same way when they named their newest spotting scope Gavia, which is the genus of loons. Historically (and to this day), the German brand has been affiliated with cutting-edge optical design and performance in their sport optics, manufacturing gear that provides users with a visual “wow” factor gen-erally accompanied by a degree of financial anxiety when considering the price. It has been refreshing to see Zeiss introduce some new prod-uct lines to their catalog in recent years that cater to the increasing consumer demand for high-quality optics at price points lower than those of premium optics. The Gavia is part of the lower-cost Conquest series, putting it in a higher-qual-ity tier, but not top-end, which is reflected in its retail price of $2,000.

MEASURING QUALITYCompare a binocular you can

get for $400 and one costing $2,400, and although you’ll see some obvi-ous differences in their performance, you’ll also see that with $400 bin-oculars, you can get high-quality views of most birds in most viewing conditions. Spotting scopes tell a dif-ferent story. Scopes are engineered

for high-power viewing. As you increase the magnification in optics, you not only magnify the bird you’re looking at, but you’re also magnify-ing all the optical defects that occur when light passes through glass. As a result, you can more easily detect the drop in the optical quality offered by a mid-priced scope relative to that of a higher-end scope. Birders often find that entry-level and mid-priced scopes leave much to be desired in terms of image quality. The Zeiss Gavia does a nice job of bringing a whole lot of quality to the market, making it a highly useable scope under any circumstances, without pushing into the $4,000 price range.

The Gavia’s specifications are all on target to meet or exceed the needs of birders. It’s no featherweight, but at 59.9 ounces, the Gavia is comfort-able to haul for an 85mm scope. The 10-foot close focus is a nice feature to have when you need it. The eye relief is consistently greater than 15mm, making it easy to use for eyeglass wearers—regardless of the magnifi-cation. Another essential specifica-tion is the Gavia’s waterproof and internally fog-proof construction. Zeiss’ LotuTec lens coating is an added benefit, ensuring that when water does hit the lens, it rolls right off—like water off a loon’s back.

GAVIA FEATURESZeiss designed the Gavia with a

helical focus mechanism, which is a large focus ring encompassing the circumference of the scope body. It’s

easy to access quickly, and the opera-tion is both smooth and precise. I tend to prefer this style of focus on a scope, because it allows for easy use while wearing gloves, and the inte-gration of the wheel into the body makes for a clean and streamlined look. The tripod mounting foot on the scope is designed to directly drop into some of the more popular quick-release tripod heads, negating the need of a quick-release plate.

Another nice touch is the twist lock mechanism that secures the eyepiece to the scope, thus assuring that it won’t accidently fall out. Other noteworthy (though increasingly standard) features are rubber armor-ing, a tethered eyepiece cover, and a body that can rotate 360 degrees while mounted to a tripod, making it easy to share scope views with any-one too short to look down into the eyepiece.

OPTICAL PERFORMANCEThe optical system of the Zeiss

Gavia consists of a 30 to 60x zoom eyepiece coupled with an 85mm scope body. I found the zoom mech-anism to be a little stiff for my liking, but I anticipate that with repeated use it will break in nicely. I’ll take that over a loose zoom any day.

The Gavia exceeded my expec-tations in terms of resolution and clarity. Looking at print on a dis-tant power pole or cones on a pine tree a quarter-mile away revealed almost as much detail as do the best scopes out there, particularly

from 30x to 45x. The Gavia started to lag behind the alpha scopes when I began to push the optics up to 60x. At high power, there is noticeable chromatic aberration with the Gavia that will obscure some fine detail. Chromatic aber-ration displays as a slight purple or green color fringing the margins of objects, particularly where there is high contrast. This is to be expect-ed in a scope at this price, and I wouldn’t consider the effect to be excessive in this case. When I bring the zoom back down to 30x, almost all traces of chromatic aberration begin to abate. Some birders will find this sort of effect objection-able, but the cost savings between the Gavia and the very best scopes on the market will surely win over birders looking for a mix of perfor-mance and value. Another optical trait in which the Gavia’s lower price is evident is the edge sharp-

ness. The image is sharp and clear across the center 75 to 80 percent of the scope’s field of view. This makes it perfectly useable, although I did find myself missing that full edge-to-edge clarity that the best scopes provide.

Zeiss hit the mark with the Gavia, finding just the right ratio of performance to cost for bird watchers looking for a scope that won’t limit their birding oppor-tunities while saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars—if they are willing to overlook some of the optical shortcomings that accompany those savings. In terms of features, specifications, and design, the Gavia is fully satisfying. Although I can’t promise that the Gavia is going to make identifica-tion of nonbreeding loons at 400 yards easy, I do feel confident say-ing that this scope won’t be a limit-ing factor.

A er using a demo model throughout a two-week birding trip in 2017, I decided to upgrade from my rst binocular—a value brand of 8x42s—to the Swarovski EL 8x32. As an avid birder and frequent traveler, I appreciate that this model combines superb optics performance with an open-bridge design. Compared with my previ-ous binocular, the EL ts my hand more comfortably. In fact, its wrap-around grip allows me to hold my bins in one hand while I reach with the other for any variety of reasons: to view a bird ID app on my smart-phone, to make notes about my observation, or even to tap a fellow

birder’s shoulder to politely point out a sighting.

e EL’s smooth focus wheel mechanism features indents, en-abling the user to adjust her view, click by click. When I bought the EL, I went from a 42mm objective lens to a 32mm. However, the light transmission is so good on this smaller model that it more than compensates in low-light situations. e 8x magni cation a ords users the luxury of a wide eld of view. While birding, this has the e ect of looking through a giant win-dow that is bolstered by uorite-enhanced lenses. ese high-end features translate to seeing the

entire subject crisply, even around the periphery. As it happens, Swarovski is the only manufacturer o ering an 8x32 binocular with uorite HD glass lenses. e result? Signi cantly better resolution and higher contrast.

I also appreciate that the EL accessories match the same atten-tion to detail as the binocular itself. Each EL comes with a Field Pro package. is includes a ni y eld bag as well as the requisite eyepiece and objective lens covers. Perhaps my favorite accessory is the neck strap. A bayonet-style attachment secures the strap to the binocular body. I also like that I can easily adjust the length of the neck strap.

With a simple twist of the northern goshawk emblems on either side of the strap, I can pull on either the binocular or the ends of the cords to make the strap t farther from or closer to my neck. is allows me to share my bins with ease.

Overall, the razor-sharp eld of view and generous panoramas, not to mention the nely tuned body case and compact size, make it hard to resist the luxury of the Swarovski EL. If you are ready to invest in an unsurpassed optical experience, don’t miss out on the exceptional quality of this binocular. My 8x32 is a manageable, lightweight model ideal for a wide variety of birding conditions.
