Report from the Chair

by Don MacQueen, Chair, RSCDS-SF Branch Committee

First and foremost, it's "that time" again -- by which I mean, our

Branch Annual General Meeting is coming up in May. This means

that we are looking for members interested in joining us on the

Branch Committee. This is an odd numbered year so an odd num-

ber of us (5) have our terms of office ending. Some, but not all,

have volunteered to be nominated for another term, so we do need

some new candidates. Please consider volunteering! We plan to

offer some revisions to our bylaws for a vote by the membership at

the AGM. I would anticipate sending out some information about

the proposed changes in the April R&S. Elsewhere in this issue

please look for some other interesting news from RSCDS HQ.

Notes from the Corresponding Secretary

by Donna Weidenfeller

I have copied information from the RSCDS website that I thought

would be of interest to some of you. For further details please

refer to the RSCDS website.

Ebooks Survey

The RSCDS is currently investigating the possibility of making its

publications available in ebook or similar format. It would really

help us if you took the time to complete a short survey which will

feed into the final decision making process. The survey can be

accessed in the following ways:

at http://www.rscds.org/news.html. 2. Click on the link on the RSCDS Dance Scottish Facebook

“Dance Music For The Future” record deal competition

In the year of its 90th anniversary, the Royal Scottish Country

Dance Society (RSCDS) is celebrating Burns Day with

a brand new initiative to get musicians involved in playing and

shaping the future of Scottish dance music.

Taking the form of a competition, the winning entry will receive a passport to the international Scottish country dancing arena and

attract a lucrative commercial recording contract.

Entries will be assessed and judged by a panel of well-known

dance music professionals and highly experienced dance teach-

ers. For the short listed entries, the competition will culminate in a grand live final in Perth, Scotland in November 2013. As well as

receiving a recording contract, the winner will be given the hon-

our of becoming the Society‟s first "adopted band”.

How To Get There:

ALAMEDA MASONIC TEMPLE

(between Park and Oak Streets).

FROM THE SOUTH: Take 880

North, exit at High Street (south of the

Bay Bridge) and drive west across the

High Street bridge into Alameda. Con-

tinue on High Street for about six

blocks and turn right on Central Ave-

nue. Go for another 10 blocks to Park

Street (with traffic light, past Park Ave-

nue). Turn left on Park Street, go one

block and turn right on Alameda Ave-

nue. The Masonic Temple is on the left

about ½ block before Oak Street.

FROM THE NORTH: Take 880

South and exit at 23rd Avenue. When

you have crossed the bridge going west,

you will be on Park Avenue. Continue

on Park until you come to Alameda

Avenue and turn right. There is free

parking after 6:00 p.m. in a city lot

right across the street from the Temple,

but accessible only from Central Ave-

nue, one block east. You can turn right

from Alameda onto Oak, right on Cen-

tral and right into the lot, after about ½

block–or just drive straight across Park

the lot after about ½ block, and walk to

the Temple at the far end of the lot. The

party will be in the Banquet Room on

the fourth floor. There is an elevator.

APTOS GRANGE Heading south from the Bay Area,

take Highway 1 towards Aptos. Take

the Park Exit (Exit 436). Turn left on

Park Avenue. Turn right onto Soquel

Drive, and right again onto Mar Vista

Drive. The hall is on the right, identi-

fied by a small white sign, sitting back

from the road with a large parking lot in

front.

Programming Committee: Kristi Closser, Sandee Schultz, and Bruce Herbold

David Cunningham, RSCDS Music and New Media Develop-

ment Officer, and the force behind the project, said “The search

is on for musicians who want to get creative with Scottish

dance music. We are looking for new and interesting ideas based around our traditional music, but which still retains all

the ingredients that make you want to dance. We want to en-

courage as many young people as possible to get involved in

playing for Scottish country dancing and to widen the public

perception of the creativity and diversity that can be integrated

into Scottish dance music”.

Speaking about the opportunities being offered, RSCDS Execu-

tive Officer, Elizabeth Foster added; “We want young people

and the young at heart to be involved in making exciting and

new Scottish dance music. The RSCDS with its extensive inter-

national network of members and Branches is uniquely placed

to give young musicians an amazing start point in their career.”

David is very keen to encourage as much participation with

branches and individuals as possible over the next few months.

So, please put your thinking caps on and find all the musicians,

schools and music tutors in your area, and pass on their contact

details to David, who will then actively support them.

The second goal for the coming months is to increase the

amount of branch-level short films and interviews on the

RSCDS website and YouTube channel. There are many news-

worthy events happening all over the world and we would en-

courage everyone involved to get out the camera, take some

stills and video footage of the events, then forward them to HQ;

where possible, we will include them on the RSCDS website

and YouTube channel. Also, if you have an event or anniver-

sary, please let us know your plans. It may be possible in some

instances for us to come and film the event and publicise your

branch activities to the wider public. This is an opportunity to

show everyone how your branch is making a difference and how you are actively promoting Scottish country dance. Please

get involved! Please also link with the RSCDS Facebook page,

let everyone know your status and encourage your members to

„LIKE‟ all the RSCDS-related material they find on the inter-

net.

The possibilities are out there. Together we can help the young musicians and dancers of tomorrow inherit a vibrant Society of

which they can be justifiably proud, and leave the progressive

legacy of Scottish country dance, music and culture which seed-

ed the RSCDS.

On a local note I want to let the membership know that Tim Wilson's dance, "Linnea"s Strathspey" has been chosen to be

published in the upcoming Book 47. Congratulations Tim!

Also, I am sad to say that Pat O'Brians's husband Walter has

passed away. Many of you know Pat from the many years she

has been dancing with our Branch. Our heartfelt condolences,

Pat, to you and your family.

by Susie Langdon Kass

The 2013 Annual Ball Gown Sale and Tea Party was held on

Sunday afternoon January 6 at Olga Reznick‟s beautiful house

in Berkeley.

Seventeen dancers from the East Bay, San Francisco, Marin,

San Jose and a carpool from the Campbell class had fun trying on, buying, and selling dressy dresses of many styles, colors

and sizes, as well socializing. Many of us found incredible

bargains, or just the right dress! And as usual we enjoyed ad-

miring and commenting on dresses others were modeling.

Olga served tea and a variety of goodies supplemented by

yummy munchies brought by some of the attendees. It was a

great spread!

We raised $323.25 for the scholarship funds from sales of

items donated and from the door entry fees. We had a total of

at least 38 transactions, including both person to person sales

and purchases of donated garments.

At the end of the afternoon a group of about 6 of us sorted all

the left overs into two batches: those items to save for next

time (about a third) and things to be donated to the American

Cancer Society second hand store (about two-thirds). We all

had fun deciding.

We‟d like to have the event in different areas, so if you could

give over your house for an afternoon to host the Ball Gown

Sale and Tea Party next year, let us know. I will bring my coat

racks and the dresses we saved. We need space to display the

dresses, mirrors, and a room or space for trying on, as well as a

table for the food. I can bring screens, if needed.

Please join us next year!
