Optical Engines poweringnext generation networks

Page 2: Optical Engines powering ENGINES - TERENA · Opnext’s optical engines are the core of an extensive portfolio of active optical components, lasers, trans-ceivers, transponders, and

Opnext is pioneering the design and manufacture ofoptical engines, which light the world’s fiber optic sys-tems and address a diverse range of markets includ-ing the telecommunications, data communications, storage, industrial and consumer communication mar-kets. Opnext was formed in September 2000, andderives its component technology, manufacturingcapability and expertise from Hitachi’s thirty year his-tory of pioneering fiber optic communications. FromHitachi, Opnext maintains a long history of industryfirsts such as, having been the first to develop asemiconductor laser for undersea fiber cable trans-mission and the first to demonstrate a fully functional40Gbit/s transmitter and receiver.

Opnext’s optical engines are the core of an extensiveportfolio of active optical components, lasers, trans-ceivers, transponders, and subsystems for applica-tions throughout the network. Opnext leverages itsactive optical devices to provide higher levels of inte-gration in modules and subsystems, creating value-added solutions for its customers. With over 350patents in the area of device design, laser manufac-turing, packaging, and module design, Opnext contin-ues to make technology strides. Opnext is active indriving and contributing to leading standards andMSA efforts such as 300-Pin transceivers, XENPAK,X2, and XFP.

A key trend in the industry is to drive significant costand power reduction in systems while achieving theperformance and reliability needed for today’s high-capacity networks. Opnext develops core laser and

photo detector device technologies, as well as, theoptical packaging platforms needed to meet industryMSA standards. By combining leadership in core opti-cal technologies and integrated optical chip composi-tion with comprehensive engineering resources inpackaging, manufacturing and subsystem design,Opnext is able to offer significant cost reductions tocustomers.

Application engineers at Opnext work hand-in-handwith customers, tailoring products to desired specifi-cations. Opnext prides itself on unparalleled serviceto all of it customers, industry giants and newcomersalike. In 2001, Opnext was recognized by CiscoSystems with its "Technology Supplier of the Year"award. In 2002 and 2003, Opnext was honored withthe "Premier Optical Component Supplier" awardfrom CIENA Corporation.

Opnext continues to expand its existing product linewith the development of next generation products. The company maintains a world-class research teamin Totsuka, Japan and continues to work with thefamed engineers of Hitachi's Central ResearchLaboratory (CRL). Opnext also has access toHitachi's Mechanical Engineering ResearchLaboratory (MERL) and Production EngineeringResearch Laboratory (PERL). Access to Hitachi'sintellectual property provides Opnext with a uniqueadvantage in developing high-end products withoutthe associated costs.
