Graham & Fiona are healthcare professionals working in aCreative Access Nation…For many years health careprofessionals wishing to be

involved in cross-cultural mission in Africa have been encouragedto partner with church healthcare providers. Personally, we havehad the privilege of serving in thechurch sector for over 20 yearsand we continue to endorse itseffectiveness. However, severalyears ago we began to questionwhether this is the only modelto follow. If we limit ourselves toworking through church healthproviders we limit ourselvesessentially to those areas where

the church is both relativelystrong and established longenough to have a health carework. Unsurprisingly, most of theunreached people groups are in

areas of Africa where there isno church and no church healthcare providers. These peoplesare mainly in Islamic CreativeAccess Nations (CANs). Shouldwe therefore leave the taskof reaching the unreached to

church planters? Does it meanthat there is no place for healthcare professionals in churchplanting? Should we considergiving up our health professions topursue church planting activities? However, most of these areas arealso the places with the greatesthealth care needs in Africa.

So is being a health care providermerely an entry ticket to allowus to proclaim the gospel? Most

assuredly not. As health careprofessionals, we are in a privilegedposition of sharing people’s livesfrom a position of trust duringtheir most critical life events:

birth, illness and death. As wehave accepted Christ as Lordof our lives, surely he is Lord ofour personal and professionalrelationships too? Therefore, our

job is rstly to ensure that all ourrelationships reect Jesus anddraw people to him. Furthermore,we have the ability to bless peopleand communities by serving them, for example by helping to reducematernal mortality, as we workwithin the framework of thelordship of Christ – the kingdomperspective. Whether it is withpatients, colleagues, neighboursor our own families, Christ-likerelationships are the means ofallowing the liberating power of

the love of God to transformlives and communities. We cantherefore proclaim with ouractions, our lives and our wordsthat Jesus is Lord.
