    Dear Colleagues and Fellow Ohioans,

    My of ces Ohio Peace Of cer Training Academy and Commission play vital rolesin protecting Ohio families by helping to ensure that our states law enforcementof cers are well-prepared for their work in communities across the state.

    The commission sets the states peace of cer training and compliance standardsand monitors instruction at Ohios many basic training academies. It also overseesthe Ohio Peace Of cer Training Academy, which provides hundreds of advanced lawenforcement courses most at no cost to local departments through regional,online, and on-campus offerings.

    Instructors use the latest technology, research, and teaching methods to deliverin-depth courses on a wide range of topics. As experienced teachers and working law enforcement professionals, they are in lock-step with the training needs of localdepartments.

    Ohios time-strapped and budget-conscious law enforcement agencies need train-ing programs that are effective, cost-ef cient, and convenient. My of ce under-stands that, and were working hard every day to deliver courses that meet theneeds of Ohio peace of cers and the communities they heroically serve.

    The Ohio Peace O fcer Training Academy (OPOTA) is a national leader inadvanced law en orcement training. Recognized by the Commission onAccreditation or Law En orcement Agencies, the academy o ers anarray o excellent training options to meet the diverse needs o Ohioslaw en orcement community.

    Mobile Academy takes training directly to agencies

    OPOTAs Mobile Academy provides exible, convenient training at or near locallaw enforcement agencies. It employs the best available technology along withsubject-matter experts to serve as instructors.

    Firearms and use-of-force training is offered on state-of-the-art simulators thatcan be set up in minutes within local training sites. Featuring high-de nitionvideo, recoil weapons, and other realistic equipment, the simulators offer hun-dreds of scenarios, drills, and exercises.

    Driving simulators help of cers improve decision-making related to traf c stops,pursuits, emergency responses, and vehicle handling. Programmable dash-boards replicate those of all popular cruisers. The simulators are housed in com-

    fortable, climate-controlled trailers that can be situated near local agencies.

    The Mobile Academy also offers hundreds of classroom courses at convenientvenues across the state. Faculty members are veteran instructors, working law enforcement professionals, medical personnel, and others who regularlypractice what they teach. They use the latest research and teaching practicesto meet ever-evolving law enforcement needs.

    Courses on an array of topics are available atthree modern OPOTA venues. The academys maincampus in London features classrooms, a scenariohouse, double rooms for overnight stays, a gym, t-ness center, and cafeteria. The Tactical Training Cen-ter, also in London, offers a 1.8-mile driving track,interactive driving simulators, and an indoor/out-door ring range. The satellite campus in Rich eldfeatures modern classrooms and a large auditorium.

    the clock through a secure Internet link on the OhioLaw Enforcement Gateway at www.OHLEG.org .Peace of cers and other authorized users can takecourses focusing on criminal investigations, legalissues, human traf cking, patrol and operations,homeland security, and more.

    The Ohio Peace Of cer Training Commission (OPOTC) shapes the training and compliance standards for more than 33,000 peace of cers whoserve the states nearly 1,000 law enforcement agencies.

    In addition to overseeing OPOTA, the commission approves and monitorsall Ohio schools offering peace of cer basic training and sets the profes-sional standards for corrections of cers, bailiffs, jailers, private securityof cers, adult parole of cers, probation of cers, humane agents, publicdefender investigators, and law enforcement canine units.

    In a typical year, the commission:

    Oversees about 600 basic training school openings

    Maintains compliance recordsfor approximately 7,000 basicacademy instructors

    Administers more than 2,700basic nal exams

    Issues about 6,000 basictraining certi cates andapproximately 600 canine unit certi cates

    The commission includes an executive

    director, legal counsel, and ninemembers. By statute, those membersinclude:

    Two sheriffs Two chiefs of police An Ohio State Highway Patrol

    representative A member of the public A Federal Bureau of Investigation

    special agent who leads an Ohioeld of ce

    An Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation representative

    An Ohio Department of Educationrepresentative

    Each May, the Ohio Attorney Generals PeaceOf cer Training Commission hosts the PeaceOf cers Memorial Ceremony, which hon-ors of cers who died in the line of duty thepreceding year as well as historical inducteesnominated by their departments. Familymembers and peace of cers from across thestate attend to pay tribute to the honoreesin a solemn outdoor ceremony near the OhioFallen Of cers Memorial Wall.

    The most poignant setting on OPOTAs main campus is the Ohio FallenOf cers Memorial Wall. Etched in its stone are the names of the morethan 700 Ohio peace of cers who have given their lives in the line of duty since 1823.

    The memorials three walls form a broken circle: two inscribed with thenames of fallen of cers and a third offering space for visitors to re ect.An eternal ame at the heart of the memorial symbolizes Ohios com-mitment to the memory of the brave men and women honored there.
