meeting the challenge…
Whilst the partnership with rascal was a profit protection led initiative, Sainsbury’s rolled out rascal across their estate using their ‘Simple’ team. The remit of the Sainsburys ‘Simple’ team is to identify and implement simple processes that drive improved compliance and remove complexity from the store operation.
simplicitySainsbury’s completed a national roll-out of the rascal magazine returns solution in 2006. Since that initial implementation, the strong partnership between rascal and Sainsbury’s has seen the following innovations launched; newspaper returns (2010), goods received service (2010), newspaper claiming functionality (2012), rascal lottery solution (2016), automated invoice reconciliation (2016), and the android application migration (2018).

case study
Using rascal, Sainsburys has been able to remove multiple processes in the store operation through automation. Stores’ compliance to the simplified process is high. The responsibility for chasing missing credit has been taken away from colleagues resulting in a significant decrease in shrink and waste.
Averaged out across the Sainsburys estate the simplified process with rascal has delivered a labour saving of 5 hours per store per week.

“It’s given us a third party news and mags provider that provides total visibility of both inbound and outbound, delivered a handset solution to stores and provided a valuable credit chasing agency.”

“rascal’s strength lies in the data they produce – it’s comprehensive – all the data is there… it is easy for people to see and challenge”
Stan AllsopSupply Analyst Tobacco, Newspapers & Magazines
“Through 2006 to 2009 we saw a significant
improvement on our shrink position through the
use of the rascal returns management processes –
something circa 50% of our shrink was reduced. The
addition of the inbound process has seen a further
30% reduction since its introduction in 2010”
It’s certainly more than paying for itself.
