Maggio Musicale Fiorentino è un festival annuale di opere liriche, concerti, balletti e spettacoli di prosa fondato nel 1933 da Vittorio Gui: si tratta del più antico e prestigioso festival europeo, insieme a quello di Bayreuth e Salisburgo, solitamente svolto da fine aprile a inizio luglio a Firenze. Ad ospitare il prestigioso festival, il Teatro dell’Opera di Firenze, denominato perciò “Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino”.

Progettato dallo studio ABDR di Roma, il Teatro dell’Opera è un ambizioso progetto culturale che vanta un’offerta funzionale unica: una Sala per l’Opera, un Auditorium ed una Cavea a cielo aperto, fruibili contemporaneamente, per un totale di quasi 5.000 posti a sedere. L’ambizione è quella di creare un Parco della Musica in grado di ospitare contemporaneamente tre concerti, grazie allo speciale studio condotto sulla sua acustica.

Il Teatro della Musica gioca un delicato ruolo di integrazione tra le diverse parti della città, in quanto posto proprio sul confine che separa la Firenze verde dal suo centro storico. Un luogo accessibile anche di giorno, dove bookshop e caffetteria sono sempre aperti, dove le famiglie possono passeggiare, leggere, fare jogging, camminare attraverso le fontane o sostare sulle sue gradinate di “pietra”, che sono concepite come veri e propri “salotti urbani”.

The Florentine Musical Month of May is an annual festival of lyric works, concerts, ballets and shows of prose. It was created by Vittorio Gui in 1933: it is the most ancient and prestigious European festival, along with Bayreuth and Salzburg. The Florentine festival takes place in Florence and goes from the end of April till the beginning of July. The Teatro dell’Opera is the place where the prestigious festival takes place and is therefore called “Theater of the Musical Florentine May”.

The ABDR studio in Rome has designed the Teatro dell’Opera, an ambitious cultural project that boasts a unique functional offer: one room for the Opera, one auditorium and one cavea in the open air, all enjoyable simultaneously. The overall capacity is in the vicinity of 5.000 seats. The main goal is to create a Music Park able to host simultaneously three concerts, thanks to the special work done for its acoustics.

The Theatre of Music plays an important role of integration between the different parts of the city, for it located at the border that separates Green Florence from the historical center. The place can be reached during day time, where bookshops and cafeteria are always open and where families can stroll, read, jog and walk through pathways with fountains or rest on the stone steps, which are designed like real “urban lounges”.

La grande sala dell’opera lirica ospita 1.800 posti. Sulla copertura della sala, sfruttando l’inclinazione, si dispone la “cavea” per gli spettacoli all’aperto per 2.000 spettatori. L’Auditorium, che spicca sul retro della struttura forte della sua particolare texture materica, ospita 1000 posti.

The big lyric opera room hosts 1.800 seats. On the cover of the room, by exploiting the inclination, the “cavea” is located for outdoor performances offering seats for 2.000 spectators. The auditorium at the back of the structure, marked by its strong material texture, hosts 1.000 seats.

L’avveniristico complesso architettonico delinea volumi e percorsi, coniugando masse costruite, rampe, terrazze e scalinate.

L’Auditorium, ospita concerti e eventi musicali e prende la forma di un enorme parallelepipedo rivestito di una particolare membrana, pensata per alleggerire la percezione del volume greve, imponente che caratterizzava la macchina scenica. Dei tagli permettono di creare un’alternanza di chiari e scuri materici, trasformando la superficie in una scultura, un’opera d’arte che gioca con gli effetti della luce.

I progettisti di Baldieri Lighting Design, incaricati di illuminare l’architettura, hanno interpretato l’illuminazione diurna, replicando lo stesso gioco di luce anche di notte ma in negativo, in una sorta di inversione che ha come protagonista la texture materica. Mentre di giorno le lastre materiche della struttura sono illuminate dal sole e si contrappongono al buio della sottostante struttura in vetro, di notte si crea un’inversione, per cui l’illuminazione interna crea un volume di luce in contrapposizione alla superficie esterna che versa ora nell’ombra. Se ne ottiene un effetto positivo/negativo reso possibile dalla retroilluminazione della maschera dell’edificio, per la quale sono stati utilizzati i proiettori FOCUS a fascio largo di SIMES.

The futuristic architectural complex outlines volumes and paths, blending constructed masses, flights, terraces and stairways.

The auditorium hosts concerts and musical events; its shape is an impressive parallelepiped coated with a specific membrane, aimed to lighten the perception of the heavy volume that marks the scenic machine. Cuts allow a play of light and obscure materials; they transform the surface in a sculpture, in a artwork that plays with the effects of light.

The designers of Baldieri Lighting Design, charged with the job to illuminate the architecture, have interpreted the daytime lighting repeating the same play of light also during the night but in negative, in a sort of inversion that has the material texture as main player. While during the day the material plates of the structure are illuminated by the sun and they counteract in the dark of the underlying glass structure, during night tile an inversion takes place; so the indoor lighting creates a volume of light in counteraction to the exterior surface that now lies in the shadow. As a result, a positive / negative effect takes place, created by the backlight of the building’s mask. The large beam FOCUS floodlights from SIMES have been chosen for the job.

Luce che dona leggerezza è il tema ricorrente del progetto. Sul perimetro della struttura sono alloggiate delle panchine per il ristoro dei passanti: una fascia di luce che scaturisce dalla base facendole percepire all’osservatore come sospese.

La luce non è solo emozione, ma è anche segnalazione e funzione. Un aspetto importante illuminotecnico prevede che all’ingresso di una struttura l’intensità luminosa sia maggiore per suggerire in maniera naturale e istintiva la direzione che il visitatore deve prendere. L’ampia vetrata dell’ingresso permette alla luce naturale di entrare e quindi di dare grande luminosità e vaporosità ai volumi: così la notte, al contrario, un volume di luce interno restituisce questo concetto di massima trasparenza della superficie. Il volume di luce interno si ripete anche nei tagli che caratterizzano la facciata di ingresso, che alleggeriscono l’impatto dato dalla continuità delle lastre in marmo che rivestono la volumetria.

Il progetto è completato dall’arredo urbano SLOT PALO, che ha lo scopo di creare illuminazione uniforme lungo i percorsi di camminamento, laddove la luce della hall di ingresso non giunge.

The recurring theme of the project is light that gives lightness. On the perimeter of the structure benches are installed for the refreshment of passers-by. A light beam located at the bottom transmit the perception to the observer that they are suspended.

Light is not only emotion but contains also signing and function. An important lighting rule foresees that at the entrance of a building the luminous intensity must be more important to suggest in a natural and instinctive way the direction the visitor should take. The vast glass windows at the entrance allow the day light to enter and to give great luminosity and lightness to the volumes. On the contrary, during night time, a volume of light at the interior gives the concept of maximum transparency of the surface. The volume of interior light repeats itself even in the cuts that mark the front entrance while they also unburden the impact of continuity given by the casing marble plates

The project is completed by the urban furniture SLOT PALO. It creates a uniform lighting scheme all along the walking paths, where the Hall lighting does not come to.

SLOT PALO è un apparecchio caratterizzato da forme essenziali e destinato all’illuminazione urbana.La sua ottica asimmetrica è completamente direzionata verso il basso: ciò consente una distribuzione luminosa ottimale per le aree urbane.

SLOT POLE is a minimalist pole-top luminaire for urban illumination and direct refletor. Its asymmetric optic is directed downwards allowing optimum light distribution.

This Award of Merit was presented to Massimiliano Baldieri by the Illuminating Engeneering Society of North America in recognition of meritorious contribution to lighting design.
