2011-2012 was a year of great change here. our Aspire brand was launched and is now well established. our website was revamped and we transitioned from paper newsletters 3 times per year to a monthly e-news.

our Board enlisted help from nine lions Consulting to create a fund development plan. the executive Director’s position transitioned to a greater focus on fund development with the creation of a Supervisors team to oversee programs and staff.

As of november 9th, I completed my tenure as executive Director and will continue at Aspire as our eASe school principal. Michelle Sluchinski began as eD on november 13th and brings to Aspire her vast knowledge and years of experience in fund development. Aspire is poised to take another big step forward to offer services and programs to children with special needs, the families who love them and the communities that support them.

Cheers,

linda Smith

Greetings from our executive Director

welCoMInG MeSSAGeS

Greetings from the Boardwarm greetings to all our Aspire families, staff and supporters. this has been a year full of changes. Getting word out about our new name and what Aspire offers has been one of the main goals this year.

we have had significant changes in staff, with long time employees Fay Dionne and lori Jack leaving the Centre. our thanks and best wishes go with them. Also, our dedicated executive Director, linda Smith, resigned as eD and stepped into a part time position as principal of the eASe program. Consequently, after a long and thorough search, we were excited to find Michelle Sluchinski to be our new executive Director. we are confident that Michelle’s leadership and experience will add fresh ideas to Aspire and our goals.

we’ve had many successful programs this year. Discovery Yoga (ages 3-6) and warrior Yoga (ages 7 – 12) was offered for the third year. the ‘You can ride two’ bike program ran in the Spring with a very successful first year. Instructors Melanie Harris & Jan Gervais went through a step by step process teaching children with special needs how to ride a two wheel bike. My own son took this course, and at the age of 15 was finally able to ride his bike; no training wheels! park It is a summer outdoor playgroup for children with special needs and their families, and took place in many fun places throughout Red Deer.

our online webcast series continued, covering many important subjects like sensory integration, Aspergers, social skills,

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, working with students with hearing impairments, and more. what a great resource for both families, and those working with children with special needs!

our two main events turned out great. Fall into Fun, held Sat. Sept. 22nd was once again a huge success. thank you to all the volunteers and contributors that make this event possible for our special needs kids and their families. we had a record successful evening of Decadent Dessert, held on April 26th this year, raising over $100,000 to help us serve children and families. Donors and volunteers alike came through for the Centre in a tremendous way. thank you to everyone!

I have just started my second year as chairperson of the board of governors, and find it hugely rewarding to work with such a thoughtful, dedicated and creative group of individuals. those who have completed their terms and have stepped down will be greatly missed. we are currently looking for new board members to bring fresh skills and ideas to further Aspire’s ongoing work to support children with special needs and their families.

when our son, eric, went through the Centre starting in January of 2000, he was diagnosed with autism. with ongoing professional support, they taught our family what that meant, how to help him, and how to reconcile it into our lives. It was in a different building then, and had a different name, but even now after all these years, when I walk into Aspire, it feels like family.

we first opened our doors in May of 1985 as Children’s Services Centre. the Centre began thanks to the determination of a small group of parents and professionals. they had a vision for a local development centre that would offer assessment, diagnostic and intervention services to children with special needs that would involve the family in all aspects of services.

we began as one program offering services to 36 children and families. over the past 27 years we have had the opportunity to connect with countless families, professionals, educators and community providers. their stories have touched us and their ideas have impacted how we’ve grown.

we now serve over 250 children with complex and severe needs and touch over 2000 people with our services, resources and training annually.

we strive to offer evidenced-based programs and services that are family-centered. Innovation, quality and professionalism are of the upmost importance in the delivery of our specialized programs. we are committed to being responsive to community needs by addressing gaps in supports and services to children with special needs.

we are here to provide hope.

ABout ASpIRe

MissionA charitable organization providing hope to children with special needs, the families who love them and the communities that care for them.

Visionworking together to discover potential.

who we were

OuR vAlueS

we Care we understand what it is like to feel uncertain and alone, unsure of where to turn for support and assistance. we know what it is like to wonder why your child is ‘different’. we empathize that you might feel helpless. we are aware of the lengths that parents of children with special needs will go through to ensure their children’s dreams, and indeed their own hopes for their future, can be recognized. Because we understand, we provide a compassionate, caring environment for every child and parent we work with. we recognize that it is equally important to provide a listening ear as it is to provide a diagnosis. we treat every child as an individual and believe in the importance of customized services. we respect and honour the journey both the children and their families are on, and we approach all aspects of our service with gentleness and care.

we are leaders

to provide exceptional services requires knowledgeable and dedicated staff. our staff are among some of the best trained in their fields of expertise. we strive to stay on the leading edge of innovative practices to ensure our clients always receive the best support we can provide. From our bus drivers to our therapists we are committed to a professional service delivery. we pride ourselves on our professional approach to management, commitment to long term growth, and self-sufficiency.

we work together we believe in working together to make a difference. For a child to thrive, we must bring together all of the people who influence that child’s life. we believe that it is important to attend to the ‘whole child’ and that to provide for a child properly requires a fully integrated approach to assessment, intervention and education. we believe in communities where all members are valued for their knowledge, skills and experience. we design our services, and structure our support, to encourage the development of communities for the children and families that we serve.

we Believe in potential we believe in the potential that lies in every person. we believe that potential is defined individually and that reaching it requires commitment, belief, information and optimism. Anyone who walks through our doors can feel the excitement - the air is filled with positive energy. each one of the children with special needs we support has the capacity to reach their full potential if they are nurtured in an integrated, supportive, professional environment. It is the extent of that potential that fills us with optimism and drives us to success every day.

At Aspire, our values are the core of everything we do. they are the promise of what to expect from our services and from our staff. we stand behind them and they guide us each and every day.

Sustainable FundingIn 2007, our Board of Directors and management staff identified the importance of creating a sustainable funding base to support our mission. to this end, we have diversified our sources of revenue to include some fee for service activities such as training webcasts. these webcasts are on a variety of special need topics and have been attended by participants throughout western Canada. Furthermore we have enhanced our fundraising efforts which includes our annual evening of Decadent Dessert. this year we were pleased to have raised more funds than we projected and reduced costs.

By streamlining all aspects of our operation, we are poised and ready to move forward as Aspire. By working together we can imagine the potential that lies in every child and create a community where possibilities become realities.

Statement of Revenues and expenseswe incurred a deficit of $71,751 for the year ended August 31, 2012. this compares to a deficit of $113,991 for the year ended August 31, 2011. the 2011 financial statements have been restated to reflect an accounting error. the amount of the 2011 holdback from Alberta education regarding the eASe program had been incorrectly calculated in the amount of $32,795.

our revenues, of $2,673,233, are comparable with those of the prior year of $2,588,644. the change is due to an increase in fundraising and donations of $52,095 over 2011 and the $32,795 mentioned above.

expenses were also comparable with a few exceptions.

direct expenditures

there was an increase in advertising expense of $6,651 over 2011. Media advertising was used in 2012 to increase the communities’ awareness of Aspire.

Brand development expense for 2011 was $39,279 compared to $2,049 for 2012. the rebranding process was essentially completed in the prior fiscal year, with a minimal amount spent for completion of the process in 2012.

professional development expense decreased by $11,064. the decrease was due to a concerted effort to minimize costs.

Service contracts increased to $119,658 in 2012 versus $54,035 in 2011. Contracted services were utilized to cover for a maternity leave during the year.

administrative expenditures

office expense increased from $29,708 in 2011 to $59,185 for 2012. the increase is attributable to amounts spent to review and develop the Centre’s fundraising strategy.

Cash flowIn 2012 we had a negative cash flow of $11,729 compared to a positive amount of $131,573 for 2011. the deficiency incurred for 2012 is a result of capital asset additions in the amount of $23,344.

Balance Sheetour current assets of $688,504 exceed our total liabilities of $606,541. the Centre has sufficient cash resources to cover all of its obligations.

Internally restricted funds (funds which require Board approval before they can be spent) total $380,666. these funds have specifically been set aside for: Building construction and improvements $49,067Supplementary program reserves $144,917Fund development (final year of a 3 year plan)* $167,748unspent Casino and Raffle funds $18,934

*the fund development program has come to an end. the amount still remains restricted but has not been specifically allocated. this is a Board decision to be addressed in the near future.
