KAIST conducted the 5th ASPIRE Undergraduate Research Academy (UGRA) on its main campus in
Daejeon, South Korea on the theme “Smart Cities” from July 1st (Sun.) to 6th (Fri.) 2018. This was the
second consecutive ASPIRE UGRA conducted by KAIST. The program was first launched in 2014 by
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
A total of 11 students from three ASPIRE League member universities participated in the 2018 ASPIRE
UGRA. The program was designed for undergraduate students currently working on research projects
related to the program theme. During the course of the program, participating students took turns
presenting their research, receiving feedback from KAIST lecturers and fellow UGRA participants. KAIST
faculty member Professor KIM Young Chul, an expert on Urban Design and Planning, provided two
special lectures. An excursion day was held in the middle of the program, and participants visited major
research laboratories doing work related to Smart Cities and gained exposure to case studies. The
program enabled participants to learn about the latest developments in smart cities research and to
improve their communication, presentation, creative‐thinking and problem‐solving skills.
