Beware of mosqui-toes! Especially thosewith white stripes, theAedes Aegypti mos-quito that carries thedengue and chikun-gunya viruses. Espe-cially as an epidemicof chikungunya is progressing inSaint Barth and Saint Martin, where the first cases were identi-fied in early December. The Janu-ary 24 report by the AntillesGuyana Epidemiology Centerconfirms 45 cases in Saint Barth, although there could be moreonce results are received from thelab in Marseilles. In Saint Martin,393 cases have been confirmed,

with a new reportexpected at the endof the week. Toavoid getting mos-quito bites, healthauthorities recom-mend–as much aspossible—to wear

long clothing in the evenings, andto use insect repellent regularly. The symptoms of chikungunya—high fever, overall aches—aresimilar to those of dengue. Thedifference with chikungunya islocalized pain in the joints. Incase of doubt, it is important tovisit your doctor. Please protectyourself and have a great stay inSaint Barth!

“Before I couldspeak, I couldd r a w , ”

explains Lola MontesSchnabel. As far as artis concerned, she cer-tainly learned at theknee of an excellentmaster. She is the oldestdaughter of Americanfilmmaker and neo-expressionist painterJulian Schnabel (whosefilms include Basquiat,Before Night Falls, andThe Diving Bell and theButterfly) and clothingdesigner JacquelineBeaurang. Lola MontesSchnabel was born in1981, in New York, in

the heart of the avant-garde movement. Shegrew up in the ChelseaHotel, where variousartists such as BobDylan, Sid Vicious,Janis Joplin (who diedin 1970), and AndyWarhol all lived at onepoint or another. Withher father, Lola learnedto paint, discoveredphotography and themovies. She spent herfree time experimentingin a lifestyle unfetteredby the constraints socie-ty can impose. A libertythat might offer its owndangers, cause its owntorments. Painting became the means to

express these senti-ments. If Lola’s canvas-es resemble those of herfather, it is by theirsharp, sometimes vio-lent palette, which isremarkably harmonious. But Lola’s work revealsher unique, personal tal-ent. She graduated fromCooper Union, an artschool in Lower Man-hattan, in 2008, and hasalready had exhibits ingalleries in New York,

Los Angeles, amongothers. And now inSaint Barth, at EdenRock Gallery thanks tothe association, ArtSaint-Barth, run byPhilippe Combres andJenny Mannerheim.

Please give us a brief introductionabout yourself and your background. What brought you to this point? My mother (clothing designerJacqueline Beaurang) is Belgian. Her mother is the love of my life, achampion horse jumper, pilot, andnurse. My father (painter and film-maker Julian Schnabel) is ofRomanian and Czech-decent, bornin Brooklyn. They met in the ealry80's and looks as if they found oneanother. I am the first born thatcame out of that love. I would choose these people asfriends even if we were not related. Before I could speak, I could draw. And it was an inherent part of myvery being to communicate visual-ly. My mother Jacqueline recallsthat she could leave me for hoursand I would be talking to myself,

staring at my hands or what everwas around. Staring off into space.I was that kid who would buildworlds and play for hours bymyself, drawing hundreds of pic-tures, and it never stopped.

You had your first solo show inNew York at The Hole in 2011and went to a silent retreat inIndia afterwards. You are nowpainting in the woods, away fromNew York. How important arethese experiences to your art? The choice to become zero whileone’s work is being displayed wasan experiment of disassociation. Ihad done as much as I could andthe paintings had to be left in theshowroom without me standingbeside them. Who I am became asubject I wanted to question bybecoming a number with no per-

sonal identification to my situation. It opened up a space for newimages and I am grateful to havefound the explosive tool of medita-tion through the process.

What kinds of images are youinterested in creating? Images that describe a world with-in a world, or a space to wonder…The spirit world for instance, it'sinvisible yet it exists on a meta-physical plane. Where shapes andlight and movement, the breath-lessness of a feather, or brush-strokes intertwine with color, mythical symbols, a little of to theside as in a dream and with a kindof musical flow to the detail of thatplace all becoming one meditation.I like to inject my art with my lifeforce. The potential of feeling!

P hotographer EdGudenas is a verylucky man! An

American photographerwho recently publishedthe book “St Barth XL,”Gudenas was hit by aWinair plane that wascoming in for a landingon Friday afternoon, Jan-uary 24, at approximately4:30pm. He was standingon the harbor-side of theroad at the top of the hillpast the airport (and notatop a car as reported bysome), having pedaledhis bike up there earlier

in the afternoon to takephotos of planes landing.People on the plane aresaid to have felt it "hit"something. An ambu-lance was called to takeGudenas to the hospitalin Gustavia.

By 7pm he was back atLe Select having a glassof rosé, with stitches inhis forehead and eye-brow, as he fell face for-ward onto the ground, but was lucky not havebroken any teeth. “Onlyin St. Barth can you start

at Le Select, take photosof planes landing, get hit, take an ambulance to thehospital, and be back atLe Select a few hours lat-er,” Gudenas reports onthe sbhonline forum.

“The ambulance crewwas super. I had riddenmy bike to the circle andthey locked it up until itcould be fetched the nextmorning,’ he says. “Mycamera was destroyed, but I had insurance on it.I also paid $27 for travelinsurance until April 1,which will cover themedical expenses. Andall of my friends herehave been super great.Even Marius from LeSelect who has his owneye problems spoke withme about his concern. Iwas standing on theground just behind and tothe north of the direction-al sign on the harbor sideof the circle. That planewas low. One inch to theleft or higher and no

more photos for me.” Hisnew motto is “Better EdThan Dead.”

Later that evening, Gude-nas went to Eddy's fordinner: “A nice Frenchcouple from NYC wereat the table next to us. Herecognized me becausehe is the one that took thephoto of the plane justbefore it smacked me. Iwas knocked out for awhile and do not remem-ber all that happened. But, I do know that peo-ple in St. Barth aregreat!”

Gudenas adds: “As far asI know I was in an unre-stricted area. I have neverentered a restricted areato take a photo. There aresigns on the other side ofthe circle restrictingaccess, but nothing that Isaw where I was… Myguess is that changesmay be made in thefuture.”
