Politeama. New forms for new artsProf. Arnaldo Arnaldi, Thesis of the Master Degree

Politeàma, from greek POLYS very and THEAMA show, literally means theater which lends itself to shows in various ways. Arose between 1880 and 1920 in several Italian cities and towns, the politeama represented a stage of fundamental importance for the long formation process of institutional places of film consumption.

In 1910, to the tune of La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, is inaugurated the Politeama of Como, designed by the architect Federico Frigerio; it was intended as place of both theater and cinema, as a multifunctional space and flexible. On this stage were called big names and there were over of the century some particularly memorable moments, until 2005, when, The Aviator of Martin Scorsese finally closed the Politeama since then in a complete state of abandonment.

The thesis proposes to offer the reopening of this complex scenic place as multipurpose for higher education of contemporary dance and dance therapy, through a project that aims to enhance all those characteristics that define its social and historical peculiarities.

UnexpecT(H)Ed situations for Kusmi TeaProf. Pierluigi Salvadeo, IX Semester

The 140-year history of the brand Kusmi Tea beginning in Russia when theyoung Pavel Michailovitch Kousmichoff opened in 1867 in St. Petersburg the first shop of Kousmichoff Tea.In 1917, Kusmi Tea arrives in Paris with the opening of the Maison Kusmi-Thé. Since then he begins to grow on the western landscape, remaining, however, a family business. In 2003 it passed into the hands of the family Orebi.Today the stores Kusmi Tea are 33, in France, in Italy, in England, in Germany and in New York.

Kusmi Tea offers a wide range of teas, a good part of which is paid to the welfare, plus accessories such as cups and teapots. The product Kusmi presents, also, attention to the container, thanks to the packaging of colorful cans in metal. The products can be divided into three categories:- 73 blends of tea, sold in various formats- 20 accessories (teapots, cups and mugs)- Gift Box which combine multiple mixes in a kit

The first consideration was made about all those gestures that accompany the tea and that the tea accompanies: take a break, listen to the music, eat a snack, chat, read a book, surf the Internet, write, think, dream. The man, then, is placed at the center of the reflection from the beginning of the design process.

A second reflection, parallel to the first, was made on two worlds which are merged together. On the one hand, the world of tradition and history which the ceremony tea culture brings with it, and, the second, of contemporary society, speed, multitasking, the to do society. How can you play two songs together with two rhythms are so different? Exactly here our strategy was defined: to enhance, to enlarge, to increase sales opportunities through a series of events, unexpected within the city, which constituted a reference to the constant brand.

These episodes, which are located in urban centers, are ephemeral, temporary, parasitic and/or symbiotic of other commercial and non. The pro-ject aims to deal directly with all the everyday actions that are carried out in the city, such as: shopping, walking, going to the park, go to the restaurant, lunch, go to the theater, go to the museum, waiting for the bus . Kusmi Tea wants to interfere directly with the daily activities of the people in the city, and to change them, to give them a different rhythm, the tea rhythm.

The urban pedestrian streets have a dual character: during the day are usually characterized by the frenetic rhythm of the shopsand, in the evening, the rhythm slows to a quite and pleasant walk, for example. The next event tries to approach the character of the street with the world of Kusmi Tea. The devices are placed in front of the lights of commercial activities, perpendicularly, establishing an unexpected dialogue with them. The configuration of the devices blocks the flow of zigzagging while shopping and during the evening walk allows you to establish a dialogue with the goods displayed in the windows, framing them in an unusual way, focusing on details that otherwise, during a simple walk, would not have been possible to understand and, in the meantime, become part of the experience Kusmi Tea. The devices Kusmi Tea can be combined, depending on the length of the window, giving the user the experience of tasting a new tea while taking a break.

Plan and elevation

The square, in the city center, is especially animated duringthe lunch hour.It is a time when people go out from the office, and the queue at the cafe is too long, while the time is too short and there is a nice spring weather outside in which no one wants to subtract. It’s exactly here that Kusmi Tea intervenes: its colorful devices invade the square and enter in the actions of anyone who stops in the square for a short stop.

PlanElevations

Kusmi Tea is a part of the action that takes place during the interval at the theater. Through a series of devices, the flows which can be identified during the pause between one time and the other, are directed, channeled in a guided route; a cup of tea can be, thus, the alternative to the queue to take the champagne. Kusmi Tea aims to accompany the break, facilitating it through a series of supports that favor the rituals of the break in the show.

Kusmi Tea is expressed in one of the most public space in a city the park. We go there for a break in an afternoon of study, to see the fall colors, for a romantic walk, for a ride in nature, to read a book or just for the pleasure of wandering.Kusmi fits in this space, integrating with it. The environments have a constant height and width, and they are marked by a series of elements that characterize the world Kusmi: dispensers for tasting, seats, and tables. In this way Kusmi offers a comfortable retreat where you can enjoy some relaxing time.

Table 45°Prof. Michele Marelli, X Semester

Starting from the Carlo Scarpa’s design of the boiserie of the classroom Manlio Capitolo in Venice, we were inspired to design a table, suitable to accommodate from one to nine people.

To write, to study, to eat, to chat, to socialize, to think. The table 45 ° is designed for a typical two-room apartment in Milan, and can be stretched with a kitchen floor.

GAM Contemporary Art Gallery in MilanProf. Luca Basso Peressut, VIII Semester

The design theme is a gallery for the exhibition of contemporary art. The project concerns a site in Ripa di Porta Ticinese St. in Milan, with total area of approximately 400 square meters.

The project had to face critically the relationship with the urban context and especially with Ripa di Porta Ticinese St. and with the open space in the back of the site on Filippo Argelati St..

On the ground floor the project has two separate buildings; the first isdedicated to the relationship with Ripa di Porta Ticinese St. dispalying in the window an art work, near to the reception and to the bookshop. The second building houses the cafe. Due to its separation from the main entrance to the gallery, it can keep his business open, regardless of the opening of the gallery. On the ground floor there is also a sculpture garden and benches that allow to give lectures and small exhibitions outside. On the river, the gallery has a platform for the installation of art works that can be seen from a distance and then mark the presence of the gallery.

On the upper floors the two buildings are joined to a unique building whichcontains spaces with different heights for the exhibition of the art works. In the basement floor, the gallery also features a conference room, a small library specialized in art and a black box for the multimedia installations.

In parallel to the design of the gallery, we designed also an exhibition andconsequently, its arrangement in the gallery. The theme of the exhibition is the relationship between light and movement in the European artists of the late twentieth century and it’s entitled Light Me Up.

The project is located in Fort Worth, Texas, near to the Kimbell Museum, de-signed by the architect Louis I. Kahn.

The project consists of two separate buildings, creating an interplay of three elements: the Kimbell Museum, the Study Center and the artist residencies.

A strong element in the project and inspired from Khan, is the diaphragm, as a space for mediation between the inside and the outside. It is installed in the facades and in the patios, located inside the two building. The facades are articulated by a rhythm of pillars in a sequence of full and empty spaces, which constitutes the mediation between the inside and the outside. The rhythm of the pillars also introduces the concept of light, by filtering it.

The patios are present in both building, and allow the light to enter directly. In the Study Center there are three patios: the first is accessed from the outside via a ramp which connect the road on the west and the Study Center, leading the visitor to the basement floor, where there are the audiovisual library and the archive of the art works in restoration. From the basement floor it is possibile to get to the upper floors via a further ramp.

Moving towards to the other two patios, which are located on the ground floor, the visitor can see the restoration laboratory, which has an exhibition open to the public, the auditorium and the library. The library has a direct connection, via a third ramp, to the reading area. Next to it, there is a study area, dedicated to the researchers, and a cafe. Each of these spaces is located inside a glass box, autonomous, which is distante from the sequence of the pillars, but related to each other through some passages, of which those on the perimeter are with double height.

In the residences the patio appears to be the element of mediation between the eight rooms and the common areas. The residences are arranged in four per floor, topped by four rooms in the open air. The common spaces are divided on two floors, and house the kitchen and the relax area. The element of connection between the residencies and Study Center is composed of some terraced steps leading to the basement of the Study Center. The steps, like the ramp that connect the road and the Study Center, ends in apassage under the water basin which surround the Study Centre. The water basin, which reflects the architecture, contributes to obtain a further aspect of the light.

The last type of light is that of the diffused light, that penetrates inside the building through a system of beams which constitutes the roof of the Study Center. The roof of the residences consists of horizontal beams in continuity with the pillar system, which allow the light to filter through.

Walking along the main ramp the visitor encounters the sculpture garden, suitable also for outdoor displays. In point of connection between our project and the Kimbell Museum there is the outdoor conference space, which has as a side scence Kimbell Museum itself. Planivolumetric

Archaeological museum on the ruins of the Villa Romana in Desenzano del GardaProf. Massimiliano Roca, V Semester

The project is located in Desenzano del Garda, near the ruins of the Villa Romana, and it’s composed of a museum building and the roof of the ruins.

Our first design intent was to create a limit condition, as the threshold from which a thing begins its essence, but also as the search towards a living in a different scale, a not conventional space.

The search towards the limit condition has led us todesigning a sequence of inhabited walls, which togetherdefine the museum. The size of each of the walls is formed by the size of the Villa, and the main axis that connects the inhabited walls between them and acts as the path of the visitor is located parallel to the old Cardo. The idea was to use the thickness of the wall as a kind of “container” of the interstitial spaces.

The entrance to the project is located in the east of the area, which strengthens the link, even if only visually, with the lake. The visitor starts his visit along under the roofs, in direct relationship with the remains of the Villa.

Afterwards the visitor can get on the ramp that leads him to the first floor of the museum. On the first floor there are the main functions: bookshop, reception and cloakroom, audiovisual library, reading areas, library, research and conservation laboratories, classrooms, workshop for children spaces and sa pace for the photography exhibition.

After the visitor is invited to go down to the ground floor where the ruins can be seen up close, but also use the cafe, the restaurant and the temporary exhibition. The auditorium has been isolated from the museum because it can be used without requiring the entry to the museum. It is situated in the west of the area with a separate entrance. In the east of the museum, there is an area of outdoor temporary exhibition. This area is also a staging area to watch the ruins and the architecture itself.
