Welcome to the Academy of Music on the Kimmel Center Cultural
Campus, the two-week home of this 7-time-Tony nominee and Winner
for Best Musical, Come From Away. We are thrilled to host this
show’s Philadelphia premiere. A story rich with heart that captures
the love and resilience of the human spirit in the wake of the
unthinkable, it is captured through a lens of hospitality and
grace.
As we officially kick off our 2019–20 Kimmel Center Broadway
Philadelphia season, boasting a combined 44 Tony Awards®, we invite
audiences to be swept away into new worlds with each show.
Productions premiering in Philadelphia for the first-time-ever
include: Tony- and Grammy Award-winning Dear Evan Hansen, the
musical that stunned Broadway from songwriting duo Benj Pasek (also
a Philadelphia native!) and Justin Paul (of The Greatest Showman
fame); Mean Girls, the movie-turned-musical from superstar comedian
(and Philly-area native) Tina Fey; Tony Award winners SpongeBob
SquarePants and The Band’s Visit; and Escape to Margaritaville, the
perfect recipe for a good time with Jimmy Buffet’s greatest hits.
New and favorites returning by popular demand include Cirque
Dreams: Holidaze, Hello Dolly!, Riverdance, Les Misérables, Jesus
Christ Superstar, Waitress, and Summer: The Donna Summer
Musical.
At the center of Come From Away is an unforgettable,
international tale of community and friendship. Don’t forget about
our FREE monthly programs that speak to the breadth of the human
experience. NEW this fall—visit our Commonwealth Plaza in the
Kimmel Center to experience Los Trompos (or “The Spinning Tops”).
Engineered by Mexican artists Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, and
crafted with traditional Mexican weavings, these larger-than-life
art pieces are here for you to sit or spin—and while you’re there,
Look Up! Look In! Commissioned by the Kimmel Center,
Mexican-American, Philadelphia-based artist Karina Puente has
designed “Papel Picado”, as an aerial companion piece to Los
Trompos with 53 hand-cut structures suspended above the Plaza. The
latest in a line of Kimmel-commissioned work, this exhibition is
one facet of our vision to transform lives daily through the arts.
Both grace our Plaza through November 17.
The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus is the region’s most impactful
non-profit performing arts center, and a home to not only touring
Broadway, but world-renowned jazz, comedians, family-friendly fun,
eight distinguished Resident Companies, and FREE education

Come From Away was originally co-produced in 2015 by La Jolla
Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theatre and presented in 2016 by
Ford’s Theatre Come From Away (NAMT Festival 2013) was originally
developed at the Canadian Music Theatre Project, Michael
Rubinoff—Producer, Sheridan College in
Oakville, Ontario, Canada and was further developed at Goodspeed
Musicals’ Festival of New Artists, in East Haddam, Connecticut.
The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and
the 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle, Washington, also provided
development support.
Broadway Philadelphia is presented collaboratively by The Kimmel
Center for the Performing Arts and The Shubert Organization.

IRENE SANKOFF & DAVID HEIN (Book, Music & Lyrics) are a
Canadian married writing team. Their first show, My Mother’s
Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding (based on David’s mother’s true
story) was the hit of the Toronto Fringe Festival, and then picked
up for a commercial run by Mirvish Productions. It has now played
and won best musical awards in the New York Musical Theatre
Festival and across North America, with Sankoff and Hein performing
in most productions. Come From Away was developed at the Canadian
Music Theatre Project, Goodspeed Musicals and Seattle Repertory/5th
Avenue Theatre. It was showcased at the NAMT Festival and enjoyed a
record-setting world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle
Repertory, followed by Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., the
Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto and the Gander Community Centre
Hockey Rink. Come From Away won three 2017 Dora Mavor Moore Awards,
four Helen Hayes Awards, five Outer Critics Circle Awards and three
Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical. David and Irene were
nominated for Tony Awards for Best Book and Score and won the 2017
Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk awards for Best Book. Irene and

Kimmel Center Cultural CampusFacilitiesA COMMITMENT TO SAFETYThe
safety and comfort of visitors, artists, volunteers, and staff at
the Kimmel Center, Academy of Music, and Merriam Theater are of
paramount importance. In the event of an emergency, audience
members will be advised of appropriate procedures by ushers and
security staff. At this time, please take note of the exit nearest
you. A red, illuminated EXIT sign should be visible, with an arrow
indicating the direction of the exit door. Should an emergency
arise, you will be directed to leave the auditorium and further
instructions will be provided as to the safest and quickest way to
exit the building. Patrons who need special assistance should
contact an usher.
ACCESSIBILITYThe Kimmel Center is wheelchair-accessible from its
east and north entrances. The Academy of Music is
wheelchair-accessible from the east lobby entrance on Broad Street.
The Merriam Theater is wheelchair-accessible from the main entrance
on Broad Street. Elevators serve all levels of the Kimmel Center,
with accessible seating and ADA-compliant restrooms available on
all levels. Accessible seating is available on the Orchestra level
of the Merriam Theater, with accessible restrooms on the Mezzanine
level. At the Academy of Music, accessible seating is available on
the Parquet and Balcony levels, with accessible restrooms located
on the Canteen level. Assistive listening devices are available for
loan. Large-print programs are available upon request of an usher
at all Kimmel Center Presents performances. Audio Description and
American Sign Language interpretation are available for select
Broadway Philadelphia performances. A limited number of
ADA-compliant parking spaces are available in the Kimmel Center
garage.
COAT CHECKA complimentary coat check is located on the lower
Mezzanine level of the Kimmel Center and on the ground floor of the
Academy of Music. Coat check is not available at the Merriam
Theater.
RESTROOMSRestrooms are located on both sides of the lower
Mezzanine and on Tiers 1, 2 and 3 of the Kimmel Center; on all
levels of the Academy of Music; and on the lower level, the Balcony
level, and Family Circle at the Merriam Theater.
WATER FOUNTAINSWater fountains are located on all levels of the
Kimmel Center and the Academy of Music and in the restrooms of the
Merriam Theater.
PAYPHONESPayphones are located on the lower Mezzanine level of
the Kimmel Center.
SMOKINGSmoking is prohibited on the Kimmel Center campus.
TOURSThe Kimmel Center offers two free tours. One-hour Building
and Theater tours are offered Tuesday through Sunday at 1pm.
Ninety-minute Art and Architecture walking tours are offered
Saturday at 10:30am (no theater interiors on this tour). Register
at the
Information Desk, 15 minutes before tour time, on the day of
your tour. Parties of 10 or more are asked to make advance
reservations. Free tours of the Academy of Music are available on
selected dates, by reservation only. For tour information and group

CHILD POLICYWith the exception of performances specifically
noted as Family Friendly, Kimmel Center Presents and Broadway
Philadelphia performances are not recommended for children under 6
years old. This recommendation exists to ensure all of our patrons
the best possible experience. All audience members, including babes
in arms, require a ticket.
FOOD AND BEVERAGEConcessions by Chef Jose Garces and Garces
Group are available to guests in the Kimmel Center at the PECO Bar
and the PECO Annex Bar and to Academy of Music and Merriam Theater
patrons at satellite bars located in the lobbies and upper levels.
For your convenience, Kimmel Center patrons may pre-order their
intermission beverages at the PECO bar up to 90 minutes before
performances in Verizon Hall and one hour before Perelman Theater
