Chapter Newsletter Home Delivery Ending
Due to increased costs (production, processing…) the monthly home deliv-ery of our Onondaga chapter newsletter will end in 2014. We are consider-ing March 2014 for the last paper based newsletter sent via the US Postal Service. We are migrating to an online presence. We will continue offering our chapter newsletter, which will include new editorials and areas of information, but will be available electronically, via e–mail, our website and on our Facebook page. We know some members do not have computers or smart phones to access web sites or e-mail. We will try to continue offering paper based newslet-ters, which will be available at our meeting hall during our monthly mem-bership meetings. Please let us know what your preference is, for receiving/accessing the newsletter: 1. I will/can pick up a printed copy at the monthly meeting. 2. I would like to receive it electronically, as an e-mail attachment. 3. I’ll read it online, at our website and/or our Facebook page.
Onondaga Chapter News February 2014
Chapter Membership meeting: January 12, 2014 Called to order: 12:01 pm Pledge of Allegiance Roll call: President-Nils/VP-Lisa/Treasurer/Membership-Jerry/Master-at-Arms-Robert/Newsletter-Patti/Legislative-Ben/Legislative Assistant-Jonesy/Road Captain-Jim President Report: Would like to restructure the meetings to be geared towards and Question & Answer session at the end of each meeting. Seminar in Owego was attended yesterday. Oath of elected officers distributed, sworn & signed. Need to clear up misconceptions about ABATE: we are not the “Helmet people”. We need to educate and spread the word about the fact that we are here to represent all motorcyclists and prevent the loss of freedom. In growing our membership we need to let people know that their support as members is the most important part of what ABATE does. We need to keep motorcycle rights separate from other issues and organizations that will try to limit and control us. This year, we as a chapter will be informing and strongly backing legislators who will support us! We will keep close attention to the social and politi-cal climates that affect us. To clear up any confusion, it has been understood that the policy of requiring a candidate for an elected officer position in our chapter to have a minimum of one year of membership (has been chapter policy). Motion (made by Nils) to implement one year minimum of membership requirement to beconsidered for an elected officer position within our chapter. (2nd by Logan) All in favor-UNANIMOUS-motion carried. State News: Abate of Long Island has succeeded from ABATE of NY, resulting in a loss of approximately 600 members. Chapter Officer Goals for 2014: President: Bringing the “Brotherhood” concept back to ABATE. Bringing ABATE into local DMV sites in our county, get-ting these organizations to co-operate with us in education and distribution of materials. VP: Working to get results from the organizations that should be working for us (DMV, Traffic Safety Committee, etc.). Master-at-Arms: More riding,, net working, keeping visible and in communications with other groups, other ABATE chap-ters, etc. Support each other. Brotherhood. Legislative: Seeing ABATE as the legislative link between motorcyclists and the laws that are in place to hurt us. Support-ing Albany in the principles of ABATE. Pass discrimination bill. Motorcyclists are excluded from certain insurance policies that other motorists are entitled to. Enforce the idea that ABATE is first and foremost a political organization. SMRO=State Motorcycle Rights Organization Assistant Legislative: Ben Rabin and Mike Giarrusso (state level) are great resources to our organization. Road Captain: More riding and net working. Would like to see us as a group appear at other bike nights to reach out to a large number in the community. Get us back to DMV. Newsletter: Would like to try to support our veterans through stops on rides to VFW, American Legions, etc. Treasurers Report: Motion to accept made by Jonesy-2nd by Patti Motion for 10 minute break made by Nils-2nd by Miles (1 pm) Back to order: 1:15 pm Membership Report: 201 members total. Please remember and support your membership benefits: -No cost accidental death/dismember insurance-$5000 death insurance policy -Avis car rental discounts -PRONER/ABATE activist scholarship ($1000 grant) -Provisional membership option (trial for new members) -Smart phone or code scanning direct to link

(New member Scott volunteers to call past members to help bring in expired members back. He will work with Jerry on this.) Products: We need to replenish sticker supply. We have skull caps and ABATE triangle sweatshirts (large). Working on new designs for Bike Blessing stickers and Helmet/Memorial Run t-shirts. Legislative information from Seminar in Owego: Goals for ABATE - working on a bill to support the stoppage of federal funding on state road blocking of motorcycles. Support MRF and lobbyists on our behalf (federal) - if you are able to join the MRF, please do so. ABATE of Onondaga has been a supporter of MRF (sustaining member) for nine years. Road Captain: Rides will always be posted in the front hall window. Bikers United (February 15th) @ Best Western “Winter Heat” $75 hotel room. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation Announces Letter to the CDC from the United
States Congress.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation has been working with United States Representative and longtime motorcycle defender Tom Petri of Wisconsin to send a letter to the Center for Dis-
ease Control (CDC) asking them to stop focusing on motorcycle safety.
The CDC released a report that claimed a universal motorcycle helmet law would save lives
and money. The problem with the report was that it was simply a collection of a few anti-quated studies done by a handful of government agencies which are just as unqualified to
focus on motorcycle safety as the CDC.
"This letter will send a clear message to the CDC that Congress is extremely displeased that they are wasting precious tax payer money on areas completely outside their area of ex-
pertise" said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. "We don't need the CDC to focus on motorcycles when there are plenty of other
government agencies already working on this."
The CDC report states that 41% of all fatal motorcycle accidents victims were not wearing a
helmet. Simple math shows us that 59% were wearing helmets when they were involved in
a fatal motorcycle crash. This is hardly a case for a universal helmet law.
Congressman Petri had this to say, "Given the demands on your budget and the unique
ability of the CDC to address such pressing issues as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alz-heimer's and a host of other conditions and issues which afflict millions of Americans and
others around the globe, we encourage you to direct your attention and resources to areas
that are not currently already being addressed elsewhere in the government."
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation urges you to contact your Representative in the United States House and ask them to co-sign this letter to the CDC. The larger the number of co-
signers the greater impact it will have. Please contact your Representative at the United States Capitol switchboard which can be reached at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to co-
sign the Petri CDC motorcycle letter. The deadline for co-signing this letter is close of busi-ness Tuesday, October 8th. Please act fast.
