Equal Housing Opportunity. p24 Better Business Bureau warns that call, text, or email may not be from the company or agency you think it is During the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic, consumer behavior changed as more began shopping online. This plays right into the hands of scammers, as more victims report losing money through websites, social media, email, and text scams than any other scams. One of the most common scams reported to the Better Business Bureau of Abilene (BBB) is Phishing. Phishing Scams impersonate trustworthy organizations, misleading targets into providing personal information. One Big Country consumer informed the BBB of Abilene: “The caller said my account was being charged $34.99 by Amazon Prime Video: ‘Press 1 if you want to cancel and get a refund.’ I went online to see if my account had been refunded and they had taken $3,499 out of my savings account. We called the bank and they noticed a transfer from our savings. I have no idea how they transferred that money. They almost stole $3,499 from us.” Two Abilene area residents reported to the BBB Scam Tracker about receiving imposter Geek Squad calls. According to one: “This person calls and tells me I’m going to be charged $399.99 for the Geek Squad and something I never ordered. They were trying to get me to open my computer so they could take control; and, they were trying to get me to give them bank account or credit card information. When I told them I was calling Best Buy they hung up on me.” The other shared: “I received a call stating that $299 was being withdrawn from my account to renew a Geek Squad account. I didn't want that; so, I called to tell them. They said they needed to process a refund. They had me complete a form online and took over my computer. They attempted to close out my bank account; but, I contacted the bank and stopped it.” Two other Abilene area residents described receiving identical texts, supposedly from Capital One: “Important- Capital-One-Message: Your services with us will be terminated! Read this now: clientcapitalone.netcast.us.” One explained, “I knew it was a scam as I do not get texts from Capital One;” and, the other declared, “I do not have a Capital One account.” Amazon and Walmart have each addressed Phishing Scams on their websites. According to Amazon, “If you received correspondence regarding an order you didn't place, it likely wasn't from Amazon. com. Amazon will never send you an unsolicited email that asks you to provide sensitive personal information” (https://www.amazon.com/ gp/help/customer/display. html?nodeId=201909120). Respectively, Walmart warns: “If you received a suspicious email from Walmart but you did not place an order, it may be a phishing scam. Phishing scams pose as a brand you trust to try to trick you into sharing personal information. If you receive a suspicious email that appears to be from Walmart: Don't click any links in the email; and, check your card statements for any unauthorized charges” (https://www.walmart. com/help/article/phishing- scams-or-compromised-acc ounts/02570f018098432e9 6f352b2823c049f). Be cautious of generic emails, as scammers cast a wide net, including little specific information in their fake emails. John Riggins, CEO of the BBB of Abilene warns consumers: “If something sounds suspicious, take time to research it; and, to ensure that you are dealing with the company you intend to deal with, contact the company directly using publicly listed contact information.” Consumers can find contact information for legitimate businesses at BBB.org.
