The Shawshank Redemption at the
New Theatre, Cardiff.
The GCSE and A level Drama students were lucky enough to go and
see the stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption at The New
Theatre, Cardiff.
A truly inspirational and dramatic portrayal of corruption and politics
within an institution, this is a story of hope and passion performed
incredibly by Ian Kelsey and Patrick Robinson as the leads.
Students will now write up a live theatre evaluation piece of this
experience as coursework.
A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and a great ‘selfie’ by Mr Ian Kelsey—
hassled by our very own Mrs Beesley!
A day to remember!

English Department News
Newyddion yr Adran Saesneg
Exciting news from the English Department—we have launched a double
competition across English for all of Year 7.
The ‘Reading Champions’ Final will take place on Monday 7th December, with
groups of pupils reading an extract from Dylan Thomas’s ‘A Child's Christmas
in Wales ‘.
Pupils have been encouraged to use all of their annunciation, expression and
even acting skills to give as much feeling as possible to their reading in order
that their group stand out from the rest.
Year 7 pupils were recently treated to a reading from last year’s winners, 7E,
who brilliantly read an extract from the hugely successful David Walliam’s
book, ‘Mr Stink’.
If the enthusiasm and standard of last year’s groups are anything to go by, this
looks sure to be a fantastic and engaging Final.
Running conjunctively with the above Reading competition is the Writing
competition.
Pupils have been asked to conduct initial research by interviewing their parents
about their own Christmas memories.
Once they have gleaned as much stirring, enthralling and captivating
memories as possible, they will be ready for the ‘Child's Christmas in Brynteg’
Writing competition, where they will then write these memories down in their
own words with as much feeling as possible.
Finalists will be announced on the 7th of December and parents will be invited
in to school for assembly in the last week before Christmas break to hear about
the winners of this competition.

Senior Rugby Update
Match Report : Brynteg 24 – St Johns (Aberdare) 5 Round 1 – WSRU Cup (HOME) Brynteg Seniors progressed to the 2nd round of the Welsh Schools Cup after a dominant display against an abrasive St Johns side. Brynteg were without several key figures, including Captain Fantastic Tom Seldon. Despite the injury list and unavailable players, Brynteg held firm and put in a great performance. The first try came from centre Joe Patterson, who glided through the defence after some superb build up play. Fly half Hywel Phillips added the conversion. Unfortunately Patterson’s centre partner, John Taylor, was injured in the build up to the try and was forced from the field of play to add further to the injury crisis. Top try scorer Tom Lillico was on hand to add Brynteg’s second try after a scorching run down the touchline with Hywel Phillips kicking a fine touchline conversion. Just before half time, scrum half Will Carr darted over from the base of the ruck and galloped in under the posts untouched. Phillips added the extras to take Brynteg to a 21 – 0 half time lead. The conditions deteriorated in the 2nd half and the powerful St Johns pack crashed over from a driving maul to take the score to 21 – 5 with 10 minutes remaining. Brynteg then showed good game management to close the game out. The pressure told on St Johns in the final 2 minutes and Phillips added a penalty to his perfect kicking tally to take the score to 24 – 5. Brynteg now face Llanishen High School in the next round of the cup on the 9th of December. The winner will progress to the quarter final stages and the match report from this key game will be in the next edition of the Brynteg News.

The 12 boys are also involved in the school ‘Infinity’ programme,
which this scheme compliments.
Within the school scheme, pupils are assigned an individual
mentor, who supports them through Year 11.
Ian spent the morning with the boys, discussing their aspirations,
their goals and the ways to achieve these.

The boys were able to ask Ian a range of questions as well as working
with him on activities designed to develop the responsibility they take
for their own learning.
He will meet with them again in January, where they will review their targets
and achievements to date. They will also be taught a range of revision strategies
that will help to prepare them for their forthcoming examinations.
In April, the boys will visit the Millennium Stadium with Ian as part of the final
session.

Newyddion Ty Seren
As part of this year’s Parish of Coity, Nolton and Brackla’s Christmas Tree
Festival, the pupils of Ty Seren decided to make their Christmas Tree out of
used egg boxes — continuing the theme of recycling.
They enjoyed this challenge immensely and their creatively completed tree
is now on display alongside all of the other entries in Nolton Church, where
everyone is welcome to attend.
The Festival concludes on Saturday 5th December with a concert featuring
Pencoed Silver Band, amongst other guests, with proceeds going to the
Motor Neurone Disease Association.
All trees are judged by visitors to the Festival and Madeleine Moon MP and
the winners of the various categories will be announced at the concert.

Transition News
Newyddion Pontio
On 16th, 17th and 18th November, we welcomed our future Teggies to Brynteg for a taster of some of the work they'll be studying next year in our Performing Arts departments.
Year 6 pupils from Brackla, Penybont, Litchard and Oldcastle Primary schools joined us for the day for lessons in Art, Music, Drama and Dance themed around urban arts.
Pupils had a great time being creative in the Art block using the street artist Banksy as their inspiration for graffiti art.
In Lower School hall with Ms Higman, pupils learnt a street dance routine and then showed off their dancing skills in a group performance at the end of the session.
In Music, pupils created 4-line raps about moving to Brynteg that they then performed to the rest of their group. Examples of a few of the raps can be found below.
With Mrs Beasley in the Drama studio, pupils looked at an urban arts poem and then created ‘freeze frames’ based on the themes in the poem.
Pupils left the day absolutely excited for their next transition event with the maths department and looking forward to visits by our English and Science departments to primary schools in the Summer term.
More information on transition can be found on our website or by contacting Mr Wade at school [email protected]

Santa Appeal 2015
Apel Sion Corn 2015
A number of forms started their Santa
Appeal 2015 in great style last Friday,
and activities continue to run during and
after school throughout the weeks
leading up to Christmas.
Form 8G held a table-top sale in the
Language Block where pupils could buy
CDs, DVDs, clothes, books, games and
delicious refreshments.
They also held ‘Guess the Clown’s Name’
and ‘Guess the Amount of Sweets in the
Box’ competitions.
8E utilised their creative skills and
pampered pupils and staff alike by
holding ‘Nail Painting’ sessions in the
Art Block during lunchtime.
There was also a very colourful
‘Ceramic Masks and Pots’ sale, which
most definitely brightened up
a cloudy day.

The pupils of 7S sold
retro-style bags of sweets
from their stall outside of
the Lower School Library
and didn’t have to wait long
for their stock to sell-out.
7S also showed off their culinary
skills and held a ‘Cake Bake’ sale
outside Room 17 —not many pupils
passed the fantastic cakes on offer
without being tempted to buy one.
8R guessed the mood of the weather
perfectly with a ‘Hot Chocolate and
Cookie’ sale outside Room 7 —they
certainly didn’t hold back on the
cream and marshmallows either!!

A closed bid auction allowing a lucky
someone the chance to win this
beautiful piece of art made by the
mother of Megan Thomas of 8T was
held on Friday, with all proceeds
going towards the Santa Appeal.
A very generous offer and much
appreciated.
Brynteg pupils from 9E had a
successful evening bag packing
in Sainsburys in aid of our
School Santa Appeal!
Adorned in tinsel and Santa
hats, they sang Carols in the
foyer and packed bags for
customers!
A massive thank you to
parents for your support as
always!

Cakes Sales proved a popular
method of enticing passing
pupils and staff to part with
their money.
9G showed off their wares
outside Room 306 in the
Mathematics Block.
Not to be outdone, the pupils
of 9N also raised money from
their baking skills with an
equally delicious display.
Each month as a school we have a specific literacy focus to improve literacy skills and
help pupils gain a better understanding of different grammatical points.
You can help to reinforce each literacy focus at home by:
testing your child on the definition of each literacy skill or grammar point.
asking your child to give you examples of sentences where they would use a
particular literacy skill / grammar point.
asking your child to give you examples of lessons where they have used each
literacy skill / grammar point.
Year 8—Clauses
A clause is a group of words that contains one complete verb.
A simple sentence has just one clause.
For example: The dog barked.
A multiple sentence can have more than one clause .
For example: The dog barked when I came into the room.
Year 7—Possessive Apostrophes
A possessive apostrophe is an apostrophe that shows who or what has or owns
something. The apostrophe is placed after the name of the owner.
For example: My brother’s shirt is red.
If a noun is plural (that means there is more than one – such as ‘boys’), then the
apostrophe goes on the outside of the ‘s’.
For example:
The boy's shoes - this means that the shoes belonged to one boy.
The boys' shoes - this means that the shoes belonged to more than one boy.

They ate exactly 3 eggs, each person had an egg.
Explain why there were only three eggs eaten.
(Answers at the end of the Bulletin)
Numeracy Focus for December
Ffocws Rhifedd ar gyfer Mis Rhagfyr
Year 9—Sentences and Paragraphs
A simple sentence has one main idea / clause and must contain a noun and a verb.
For example: I play tennis.
A compound sentence contains two main ideas / clauses where each clause can stand
alone on its own. These two ideas / clauses are usually joined by a connective
(and/or/but etc.).
For example: I play tennis and I also play rugby.
A complex sentence has at least two main clauses. The main clause can stand alone
as a simple sentence but the other clause (subordinate clause) would not really make
sense if it stood alone as a simple sentence.
For example: I play tennis because it's interesting.

Massage in Schools Programme (MISP)
The MISP is an easy, accessible, & effective tool for improving children’s quality of life in
school.
The basic routine consists of a series of simple movements that evoke images, thereby
engaging the child’s natural faculty of imagination. All children are taught the same basic
routine, and they do their movements over clothes on each other’s back, arms & head.
When the child brings the MISP home, the parents begin to understand its value, both for
their child and for themselves.
MISP is a practical tool for use against bullying
A positive action which helps to calm children down
A tool to focus on homework
Sleeping better at night
An activity which the child and parent share together
An improvement in sibling relationships
Every child will be asked permission from another child before massage takes place. Every
child has the right to say ‘NO’ to ‘MISP’. Consent forms will be handed out before MISP will
take place.
Below are the names of the strokes in the ‘Massage in Schools Programme’ routine:

A Voice for the Child
“Children are not the people of tomorrow,
but people today. They are entitled to be
taken seriously. They have the right to be
treated with tenderness and respect, as

‘Mindfulness’ is an ancient Eastern practice which is very
relevant for our lives today and is a very simple concept.
‘Mindfulness’ means paying attention in a particular way:
on purpose, in the present moment and non–judgmental.
‘Mindfulness’ does not conflict with any beliefs or traditions,
whether religious, cultural or scientific.
It is a simple and practical way to notice thoughts, physical sensations, sights,
sounds, smells and anything we might not normally notice.
‘Mindfulness’ for young people is easy to carry out, fits into a wide range of
contexts, is enjoyed by both students and teachers and does no harm.
‘Mindfulness’ can improve the mental, emotional, social and physical Health
and Wellbeing of young people. It reduces stress, anxiety, bad behavior,
can improve sleep and self-esteem, promotes calmness and
self-awareness.
Mindfulness can help young people pay greater attention, be more focused,
think in more innovative ways, use existing knowledge more effectively,
improve working memory, enhance planning, problem solving and
reasoning skills.
Studies also show that adolescents who are mindful, either through their
character or through their learning, tend to experience greater
wellbeing and popularity, more positive emotions, and have less
anxieties.

Once again, children and young people have the right to say ‘NO’. They will be
asked to participate or they are able to participate voluntarily. The sessions
will be run on a Tuesday, second lesson in Lower Library every three weeks.

Trash by Andy Mulligan
Raphael is a dumpsite boy. He spends his days wading
through mountains of steaming trash, sifting it, sorting it,
breathing it, sleeping next to it.
Then one unlucky-lucky day, Raphael's world turns upside
down. A small leather bag falls into his hands. It's a bag of
clues. It's a bag of hope. It's a bag that will change
everything.
Soon Raphael and his friends Gardo and Rat are running
for their lives. Wanted by the police, it takes all their
quick-thinking, fast-talking to stay ahead.
As the net tightens, they uncover a dead man's mission to
put right a terrible wrong. It's three street-boys against the
world...
