What are free radicals?When we look at normal, healthy atoms, the building blocks of life, many of us remember from high school what they look like. Imagine the atom as the foundation a house is built upon. When atoms are healthy, the cells replicate and keep the body young, strong, and disease free, producing a well-built, healthy foundation. A healthy atom has two electrons. However an atom missing an electron is called a Free Radical. An excess of Free Radicals in the body is the same as a slowly crumbling foundation. Too many cracks and the house falls apart.

Free radicals are created in our bodies every moment of the day in normal metabolic functions. Environmental factors, such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke, pesticides, drugs, alcohol,

chlorine in tap water, and chemically laden foods create an excess of free radicals, which increases our risk for disease. Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free radical production becomes excessive, damage occurs. Notably, free radical damage accumulates with age and contributes to premature aging, sickness and diseases. Dr. Bruce Ames of the University of California at Berkeley estimates that the DNA of each of our 50-80 trillion cells is attacked by free radicals a staggering 10,000 times per day.

The good news is antioxidants neutralize free radicals! Our bodies produce some antioxidants and other important antioxidants are present in whole fruits and vegetables. All of these antioxidants work together to form a powerful defense system to support good health.
