Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of Touch Magazine for 2016! Just as one holiday season is finishing up, another is right around the corner. Easter is approaching and it’s a great time to order new collateral for your store. We’ve also got four, free, tear out POS posters for you to display. These posters are a great way to advertise the top selling gift and game cards available to purchase.

In 2016, we continue to demystify the gifting and gaming industry with our Product of the Quarter feature. For our first edition, we are shining the spotlight on paysafecard. paysafecard is a prepaid voucher that offers consumers an easy and secure way to pay online. Writer, Karla Dondio, gives us some insight into the reasons why this product has catapulted itself to the top of the prepaid category.

Also in this edition, we investigate the rise in social commerce. Starting in 2014 with Facebook and Twitter’s “Buy” buttons, and Instagram’s Like2Buy option, this trend has progressed to include multiple, exciting social media selling solutions. We explore the evolving relationship between social networking and business, and unpack how “social shopping” solutions function.

As always, please find any product and margin information you might need in the eServices section of our magazine.

Finally, this will be Marketing Manager, John Rowbottom’s final edition of Touch Magazine. We’d like to extend a big thanks to John for all the hard work he has put into the magazine over the last twelve months.

Happy exploring!

social commerce

So how does the buy button work on Facebook? It’s really as simple as a promotional post appearing on the page with a button labelled ‘Buy’ under an offer. The user clicks on ‘Buy’ and the payment is processed in a few easy steps (after shipping and payment details are entered just once with the initial purchase). The bonus is that the user never has to leave Facebook and can immediately resume checking and posting to their feed afterwards.

While that all sounds well and good, in actuality Facebook has been prudent about pushing the feature out on a large scale. The site launched the feature back in 2014 to a “select” group of US-based merchants and is said to be still in the testing phase. Additionally, a Facebook representative has conveyed that the feature is not a major priority for the site, which makes you wonder whether it has failed to ignite interest from users. To be fair, Facebook has a lot to lose if it integrates social commerce too quickly and agitates its massive user base.

Interestingly, Facebook’s cold feet haven’t stopped Instagram (a site that Facebook bought for $1 billion dollars back in 2012) from launching its ‘Shop Now’ buttons in 2015. And in context, the move makes sense. An aesthetic-based platform, Instagram has been touted as having greater potential to capture

direct shopping opportunities because of its media rich content. Backing this up, a study by Kenshoo – a digital marketing company – demonstrated that Instagram users are much more likely to click on ads than users on any other social media site. The snag for Instagram could be its youthful demographic which is known to spend less. In fact, Millennials’ online window shopping habits have inspired the term “fauxsumerism”, meaning they like to browse but not buy. However, it’s too early to tell how this will impact Instagram’s success in the social commerce space.

Pinterest is a platform that capitalises on visual beauty. You only have to visit the site and search ‘home interiors’ to see what I’m talking about. Such is the power of its aesthetic appeal that fashion retailer, Nordstrom, highlights its products that are trending on Pinterest in its US stores. Even before the platform launched its ‘Buyable Pins’ in June last year, studies revealed that users already utilised the site to research potential purchases. In May last year, digital solutions provider, Millward Brown Digital, stated, “Ninety-three percent reported that they use Pinterest to plan for purchases, and another 87% reported Pinterest engagement has helped them decide what to purchase.”

Users were thrilled then when Pinterest made purchasing “pinned” products a simple

"User adoption may ultimately depend on how seamlessly the feature is executed across each platform..."

8

Not too long ago, social media marketing was all about “starting a conversation” with the

customer. Businesses were coached in the art of building trust and loyalty, rather than selling their wares directly via social media platforms. The idea behind that strategy was to inspire brand confidence, which would eventually lead to sales somewhere along the line. However, while some brands have been successful in translating a savvy social media presence into sales, many businesses have been left wondering if the commitment was worth it. Well, the “starting a conversation” strategy could very soon be relegated to old news with the advent of buy buttons.

It’s no surprise that the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter have all launched into the social commerce space with buy buttons. Let’s not forget that, despite these platforms being free to use, they are commercial enterprises after all. Add to this the convenience of purchasing goods without being diverted away from the site and it’s a win-win from the perspectives of these social media moguls. How fluently users adopt e-commerce on social media is another thing again. More on that later.

What makes social commerce potentially so lucrative is soaring smartphone usage. In 2013, almost two thirds of Australians owned a smartphone. Just two years later that figure was estimated at 85% saturation. (A side note, mobile phone accounts now exceed the Australian

population.) Subsequently, this has seen many businesses refocus their energies on capturing the mobile commerce (m-commerce) space. If reports are anything to go by, this market segment is growing quickly.

According to Power Retail, a news and information resource for the online retail industry, and an article published in February 2015 by editorial member, Rory Betteridge, “The combined PayPal/Ipsos research, which examined shopping habits of over 17,500 shoppers in Australia and overseas, revealed that m-commerce is growing at nearly three times the speed of online retail as a whole.”

With mobiles enabling people to stay in touch with social media from just about anywhere, connecting these platforms with direct shopping opportunities isn’t much of a leap. And if Facebook’s 1.44 billion users (1.25 billion who connect via their mobile) is anything to go by, the mind boggles at the potential of social commerce.

You could say Facebook, like other social media sites, has already been indirectly wading in social commerce via its promoted posts and advertisements. However, the notion of buy buttons is to combine the ease and convenience of shopping with the casual nature of socialising. On a commercial note, Facebook hopes that the feature will optimise conversion rates for businesses by shortening the transaction process.

channels? On the outset, they don’t seem too excited.

According to independent market research company, eMarketer, “GlobalWebIndex polled social media users worldwide ages 16 to 64 in November 2015. When it came to their interest in using buy buttons via select social media networks, few were interested … Instagram’s (14%), Pinterest’s (13%) or Twitter’s (12%) buy buttons. Interest was lowest for Facebook’s buy buttons; just 9% of Facebook users said it appealed to them.”

Of course, one must remember that given the enormous followings of these sites, these percentages are still sizeable considering the feature is in its infancy. User adoption may ultimately depend on how seamlessly the feature is executed across each platform, and how successfully these platforms avoid interrupting users’ feeds. Additionally, they need to demonstrate that they can be trusted with personal payment details. Further to this, one of the main concerns raised over buy buttons is that impulse buying will

escalate. Studies show that when it comes to shopping, ease and convenience does encourage impulse purchases. So, will buy buttons encourage a new breed of impulse shoppers? That’s a difficult one to call, especially when the internet in general already offers unprecedented convenience. What I will say is this: social media sites will be banking on it.

At this point it’s difficult to predict how successful social commerce will be. Primarily, the feature needs to roll out on a worldwide scale before we can accurately assess its impact on users and merchants, alike. Nevertheless, the figures so far are indicating that businesses are keen to get on board. Of the 22% of merchants who took up the opportunity to try out buy buttons last year, the figure is estimated to rise to 60% in 2016. The message here is that Australian merchants need to stay abreast of social commerce to see whether it’s something they can capitalise on in the future. Because you never know, buy buttons could very well be the next big thing.

social commerce

10

process. ‘Buyable Pins’ are denoted by a blue ‘Buy It’ button on product offerings and work seamlessly across mobile devices. Payments can be processed for merchants via Apply Pay and reputable commerce platforms such as Shopify and Demandware. At this point, selling products via Pinterest is only available to US merchants.

Like Instagram, it’s too early to judge how profitable this feature will be for Pinterest and its merchants, but so far opinions are divided. Some digital marketing experts are lauding the site for taking that evolutionary step from social to shopping network. Meanwhile, others are keeping mum while the site sorts out some logistical issues. One such issue is that old products that are pinned on the site are often no longer available for purchase. You can imagine how frustrating this would be for potential buyers, especially when the feature is touted as making shopping easier for users.

Last year, Twitter rolled out its ‘Buy Now’ feature after two years of testing. The feature

currently enables US-based businesses to sell products directly on the platform via any three of its commerce partners: Shopify, Demandware and Big Commerce. The process is as simple as a business tweeting a product link that appears with a ‘Buy’ button. Twitter users will only have to tap the screen twice after their initial purchase to buy a product. While this offers an unparalleled ease of shopping, brands are still being urged to keep their offers targeted.

Social Media Today’s founder, Brett Relander, postulates, “It’s incumbent upon marketers to ensure that any offers they make are highly relevant to the tweet to which the offer is attached. In order for ‘Buy Now’ buttons on social media to be effective and drive sales, they cannot be simply included in a tweet as a last-minute thought.”

With Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter all launching into the social commerce space, you’d be forgiven for thinking buy buttons were a sure thing. But what do users think about their social networks evolving into shopping

“...the notion of buy buttons is to combine the ease and convenience of shopping with the casual nature of socialising.”

Touch delivers a great range of products via its devices. For this Product of the Quarter we’re showcasing paysafecard, an online, prepaid payment voucher for your customers.

By Karla Dondio

It was Benjamin Franklin who uttered the memorable words: “There are only two

certainties in life – death and taxes”. If Franklin were alive today, and familiar with the internet, he might amend the latter part of his statement to “ – cat videos and fraud.” But while you may have the control to bypass those cat videos, the same doesn’t apply to online fraud.

With burgeoning digital capabilities, the 90s saw the emergence of e-commerce, a way to shop without having to leave your home. The era subsequently gave birth to online juggernauts such as eBay and Amazon. It wasn’t until the arrival of the new millennium, however, that this online home shopping option really began to thrive. E-commerce not only became fertile ground for new businesses to flourish online, it also provided a new platform for brick and mortar stores to reach new customers. However, while innovation and opportunity abounded, the rise in e-commerce also provided fresh opportunities for fraudulent behaviour.

So, while the digital age offered consumers an easy and convenient way to shop, it also made people tenuous about sharing their financial and personal details online. On the other hand, if you didn’t own a credit card, or a debit card that acted like a credit card, you were sidelined from the online shopping boom.

A unique product called paysafecard is born.Meanwhile, four young Austrians had been keeping a keen eye on the market and observed a gap in the burgeoning e-commerce space. As a result, they created a unique product called paysafecard, which was launched in their home

country in 2000. paysafecard offered consumers a safe and secure way to pay online, while also tapping into that segment of people who had been previously excluded because they didn’t have a credit card.

“The idea behind paysafecard is – and has always been – to enable everyone to pay online. That’s why we are working on expanding our partnerships across the world. The bigger the network, the more consumers can enjoy easy and secure online payments,” says Udo Mueller, founding member of paysafecard.

paysafecard is a safe and easy way to pay online.paysafecard is an easy to use, secure, online, prepaid voucher that enables consumers to pay across thousands of digital outlets throughout the world. The beauty of paysafecard is that you can purchase it in a number of increments ($10, $20, $50 and $100) at any time and then use it at a later date. No bank account, credit card or personal details are needed. All that’s required to make a payment is a unique 16-digit paysafecard PIN and users are off and running. Additionally, paysafecard is absolutely free of charge to use, so there are no cumbersome fees unlike a credit card. Users can also download the free paysafecard app, which enables you to locate the nearest sales outlets to purchase vouchers. The app also allows you to stay current with your paysafecard balance and the latest promotions on offer.

paysafecard’s success sees it expand globally. To prove its staying power in the market place, a year after it launched in Austria, paysafecard

product of the quarter: paysafecard

Another reason consumers are so drawn to using paysafecard is cost control. Credit card debt in Australia today is only increasing, placing enormous pressure on users to manage their escalating debt.

In an article published in The Age in June last year, author Gerard Brody reported, “The biggest financial obligation that Australians have after their homes and cars is credit card debt, $50 billion of it. More than $33 billion of this is accruing interest, often at eye-watering rates over 19 per cent per annum.”

paysafecard can only be bought in increments of $10, $20, $50 and $100, which means consumers have a limit to their spend and are not at the mercy of a seemingly endless credit card limit. paysafecard is the perfect option for consumers who don’t have a credit card in order to avoid the burden of crippling debt. However, with paysafecard they still have the option of paying online.

paysafecard can be used to transact across thousands of digital outlets and this number is growing every year.Around the world, paysafecard can be used to buy products at over thousands of online stores in a range of categories. Digital entertainment is phenomenally popular today. Take League of Legends (LoL), for example, a multiplayer, online, battle arena game which experiences traffic of 27 million users daily. paysafecard has partnered with LoL to enable its users to purchase these highly sought after gaming products. Other gaming partners include Electronic Arts and

Mojang (Minecraft). paysafecard also enables users to pay for subscriptions across VoIP platforms, such as Skype, as well as through major music streaming services, including Spotify and Deezer. paysafecard can also be used to pay online at Dino Direct for fashions and electronics, and to buy Amazon Gift coupons. Dating sites such as Badoo and Cupid.com also accept paysafecard to allow users to utilise these sites. paysafecard has a plethora of other reputable partners.

The future looks bright for paysafecard with 12 million consumers already reaping the benefits of safe and easy transactions online. Meanwhile, the focus for paysafecard is to continue to expand its global reach and offer more online destinations for its customers to shop at. Additionally, new products are being launched as an extension of paysafecard.

Offer your customers a unique product and build your revenue!Having launched in Australia a few years ago, paysafecard has demonstrated a strong uptake by consumers. Be sure to offer paysafecard to your customers, which provides them with an easy and secure way to pay online, while you reap the benefits of building your revenue – easily and effectively. If you’re interested in paysafecard products, contact [email protected] and the customer care team can facilitate your order. paysafecard is offered in the following denominations: $10, $20, $50 and $100.

22

product of the quarter: paysafecard

became available in Germany. By 2006, it was available in Greece, Slovenia, Spain, Great Britain and Slovakia, and by 2008 had extended its reach into France, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2009, paysafecard launched into nine more countries and expanded beyond its European borders into Agentina. Next up were the USA and Mexico in 2010, and in 2013 the company reached the shores of Australia. In the same year, paysafecard was acquired by the Skrill Group, and in 2015 it became part of Paysafe Group.

Since its inception, paysafecard has received many awards catapulting it to the top of the prepaid category.Due to its global reach and success, paysafecard has received a number of awards. More recently, in 2015, it won one of Austria’s most prestigious business prizes, ‘Austria’s Leading Companies’, in the Big Player Vienna category. paysafecard qualified by delivering a turnover that exceeded 50 million Euros. Additionally, it has been awarded the Paybefore Award in the categories of “Best Digital Currency”, “Best Virtual or Digital Program”, “Top Digital Dollars” and “Consumer Value”. Just this year, paysafecard won an award for “Best in Online or Mobile Commerce Solution”. Today over two million people use paysafecard on a regular basis every month, with a 96.5% satisfaction rate according to paysafecard’s 2015 customer survey.

paysafecard offers many great benefits.Accolades aside, let’s take a closer look at some of the benefits of using paysafecard. Foremost, the security that paysafecard offers online cannot be underestimated. Today, card-not-present fraud continues to flourish, which can be attributed in part to the regular use of credit and debit cards online.

According to the Australian Payments Clearing Association and their 2015 Australian Payments Fraud Details and Data report, “In 2014, card-not-present fraud on Australian cards increased by 42 per cent on the previous year to $300 million. The majority of this increase (67 per cent) occurred overseas. This can be partly understood by the continued and growing popularity of e-commerce and the use of payment cards in the card-not-present environment.”

As more and more security measures are put in place, making counterfeit cards and skimming are increasingly difficult, reports indicate that scammers are refocussing their energies online. Due to these posed security risks, a segment of Australians remain digitally nervous about using cards to shop online.

Mueller states, “The majority of consumers in Australia still rely on cash. Many Australians also have safety concerns when it comes to paying online. This makes our product particularly interesting for Australia as customers can use paysafecard as safely, easily and fast as cash.”

The other great benefit of using paysafecard is that it protects the financial privacy and data of its customers. And for good reason. According to the Australian Crime Commission, “In 2010, credit card information was the most commonly sold item in the underground economy, accounting for 22 per cent of items for sale.”

Unlike a credit card, paysafecard doesn’t require the user to enter in any personal details, just a unique 16-digit pin. This means that any transaction using paysafecard is not only fast but also extremely secure.
