On the 21st of April, two groups of 7 pupils walked 16 miles, following an extensive route from Brynteg Comprehensive School to Ogmore by sea. With half our body weight in a rucksack on our backs and hot summer temperatures, we came across some obstacles. When the expedition was completed, we spent the rest of the weekend, feeling wretched and watching hours of T.V because we could barely stand on our sore feet!

For the expedition, we had to complete an eight-hour walk. We all met at the start point for 10:00 am and had to double check we had everything we needed: tents, sleeping bags, maps, food rations, sun cream etc... After looking over the routes highlighted on our maps we began to set off. Within the first half an hour the majority of us began to regret the decision we made to participate, but with the encouragement of our team members, we were able to trudge on, even when we felt far from our comfort zones.

There were times when we were tested with our map reading skills and even wandered the wrong way a couple of times. Some of us were solely practising the skill and others read a map successfully for the first time, with a little encouragement from the teachers of course.

Page 17: Online Brynteg Newsbryntegschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/...May 25, 2018  · 25th May 2018 25 May 2018 Issue No. 75 yhoeddiad 75 Online Brynteg News Newyddion Brynteg Ar

As part of the walk, we had to cross Ogmore stepping stones, and that wasn't easy! The river had covered the stones, making them slippery. The teachers went first, followed by us pupils and after the two first falls into the water (one being the teacher) a few of us decided it would be better if we walked through the shallowest part, at least if we fell we wouldn't get wet above our knees! As refreshing as this was to cool down, after walking all day in the sun, some of us soon regretted this decision! The shoes started to get heavier and one pair even began to fall apart!

At the checkpoint, we were able to rest and set up the tents. Many of us would agree that the best part of the whole day was when one member sat in a patch of stingy nettles. This then meant that someone had to practice simple first aid training.

We then set up the stoves and cooked some food that we had been carrying. After the little break, we had regained some energy and were able to walk back to the checkpoint.

Although it was sometimes tough work, both groups remained happy and we all completed the expedition successfully. Some people in the groups found cooking difficult, some found map reading difficult and some found the non-stop hiking difficult. But together we were able to combine our strengths and weaknesses and overcome the difficulties we faced alone.

At times it was hard work but in the end, it was really worth it, we learnt new skills and formed new friendships. We had a great time, had a laugh with each other and uplifted one another when we were too tired to carry on.

Online Safety – help for parents and carers

It is often challenging to keep up with your children's use of technology; what they are doing online, who they are chatting to, what games they

are playing and what they are downloading and viewing. This area of the Hwb Welsh Government website will help parents and carers to make

informed choices regarding their children’s online activity.

Literacy Focus for May Ffocws Llythrennedd ar gyfer Mis Mai

Each month as a school we have a specific literacy focus to improve literacy skills and help pupils gain a better understanding of different grammatical points.

You can help to reinforce each literacy focus at home by:

testing your child on the definition of each literacy skill or grammar point.

asking your child to give you examples of sentences where they would use a particular literacy skill / grammar point.

asking your child to give you examples of lessons where they have used each literacy skill / grammar point.

Year 7 - Nouns

A noun is a word that names a thing or a feeling. The four types of noun are: common (general, e.g. animal, chair), proper (a specific name, e.g. Bangor), abstract (an idea or

concept, e.g. happiness), collective (a group, e.g. herd, crowd).

Year 8 & 9 - Connectives

A connective is a word used to link sentences or clauses or to connect words in a phrase. They express different kinds of link: cause (e.g. because), opposition (e.g. but), addition

(e.g. and), time (e.g. until).

Book of the Fortnight Llyfr Y Pythefnos

The Great Escape by Megan Rix

Buster is a lively Jack Russell. Tiger is a feisty white and

ginger tom. Rose is a faithful Collie.

Robert and Lucy Edwards love their pets more than

anything; but the threat of the Second World War forces

them to flee to Devon - leaving their animals behind. And as

the air raid sirens sound over London, the frightened animals

are sent to be put down.

Buster, Tiger and Rose make a daring escape but with danger

at every turn, can the trio make it across the country as it

prepares for battle - and cheat death for the second time?

This book falls in the War Genre.

Do you have any overdue school library books at home? Due to depleted stock it would be very much appreciated if any overdue books found could be returned to either the Brynteg upper or lower school offices for the attention of the Librarian. There are no fines owed on any overdue books. For pupils who are not returning to Brynteg School in September 2018 please could those pupils ensure they return any books currently on loan. Thank you Mr G Lewis - Librarian

Hot Chocolate with the Headteacher

Photo of the week - 25th May 2018

Our photo of the week comes from the brilliant year 11 celebration assembly which was held on Monday. It is another of the photos where the faces of the pupils speak volumes!

Photo of the week - 18 May 2018

The photo of the week shows year 8 pupils enjoying science in the sunshine using quadrats and nets to calculate the biodiversity index of Brynteg school - demonstrating once again, what a wonderful resource our grounds are!

Pupils enjoyed hot chocolate with the Headteacher on 11th

May. This was a

busier hot chocolate meeting than usual, these Year 11 pupils were joined by

Mr Harvey (BCBC Corporate Director Education) and Mrs Harris (our Challenge

Advisor). What a fantastic impression our pupils gave to our visitors
