ALMAMATERHYMN Written by Dr. Frank m. Williams (Please stand and join the Choir in the singing of the Alma mater.) Roanoke College Choir Dr. Jeffrey R. Sandborg, Director

Deep in our hearts, a flame is softly burning. Deep in our thoughts, the mem’ries are returning.

Bells that are ringing, choirs that are singing, Bring back the joys that we have known.

Learning to live, and loving as we’re learning. Seeking to find the truths for which we’re yearning.

Years come and go, but we’ll always know That dear old Roanoke served us well.

To live once more, here in these hallowed halls. To know once again all the joys that we used to know!

Some day the winter of life will pass before us. Then we’ll remember the place that proudly bore us.

Then we’ll remember Alma mater. Then we’ll remember Thee.

THEBENEDICTION The Rev. Henrickson (The audience will remain standing until the academic procession has departed. All graduates and their guests are invited to attend the

Celebration Light Luncheon on the Back Quad. If Commencement is moved to the Salem Civic Center due to inclement weather, the

luncheon will be held in the Roanoke College Colket Center. Lunch will be served for two hours following the Commencement exercise.)

DavidRonaldGoode

David Ronald Goode, a native of Vinton, Virginia, is the retired chairman, president and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern Corporation. He shares with his wife, Susan Skiles Goode, a deep passion for the arts and for their local communities.

mr. Goode has held directorships at Caterpillar Inc., Delta Air Lines, Inc., Georgia-Pacific Corporation, Texas Instruments and Russell Reynolds Associates. He is a former member of the Hollins University Board of Trustees, is past governor of the Foundation for Roanoke Valley, has served on the Board of Visitors of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and is a trustee of the General Douglas macArthur Foundation. He is Honorary Trustee for Life, Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.

mr. Goode received his A.B. from Duke University and J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is a graduate of the Advanced management Program of Harvard Business School.

He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. In 1998, Railway Age, an industry trade journal, bestowed upon him the honor of “Railroader of the Year.” In 1999, the Virginia Press Association named him “Virginian of the Year.” In 2005, the Norfolk Southern office building in downtown Atlanta was named in his honor.

mr. Goode has been active in industry and civic affairs. He was a member of the Business Advisory Committee of the Transportation Center at Northwestern University, Coal Industry Advisory Board, National Freight Transportation Association, National Grain Car Council, and Virginia Business Council. He also served on the boards of the Association of American Railroads and Aeroequip-Vickers.

During his 41 years with Norfolk & Western Railway and then Norfolk Southern, mr. Goode was instrumental in weaving the arts into the company’s operating culture. He devoted considerable energy to the boards of arts organizations, such as the Art museum of Western Virginia and the Hampton Roads Business Consortium for Arts Support, and encouraged other business executives to embrace and support the arts. Under his direction, Norfolk Southern was a major corporate patron for the arts. As chairman of the Virginia Commission for the Arts, mr. Goode worked to increase state funding for arts organizations in Virginia.

mr. Goode and his wife established a gift in memory of mr. Goode’s father, Otto Goode, a member of the Roanoke College class of 1931, and his sister and her husband, martha Elizabeth Goode Pasfield and Robert Pasfield, members of the class of 1967. The Goodes’ generosity made possible the Goode-Pasfield Center for Learning and Teaching in the College’s Fintel Library. The center, a campus resource that offers writing support, tutoring services, academic enhancement services and other support for students, was dedicated in 2008.

mr. Goode and his wife are Lifetime Distinguished Associates of the College.

The names of David and Susan Goode are found across the Roanoke Valley, Greater Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth of Virginia, where vision and generosity were needed to complete good works for the arts and local community.

SusanSkilesGoode

Susan Skiles Goode, a native of Wilmington, Delaware, is a community leader and volunteer who shares with her husband, David R. Goode, a deep passion for the arts and for their local communities.

mrs. Goode, a former schoolteacher, has been an active volunteer and board leader for many arts organizations, including the Virginia Symphony, the Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and Americans for the Arts. Her love of classical music and her belief that music education makes a difference in the lives of children led to the creation of the Virginia Symphony Partners in Education program. The program reached an estimated 53,000 students through a myriad of in-school and after-school programs.

In 2008, mrs. Goode and her husband were honored with a Governor’s Arts Award for their work on behalf of the arts across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

mrs. Goode, a graduate of Duke University, is a member of the Virginia Wesleyan College Board of Trustees. She also serves as regional vice chairman of the Virginia Historical Society and is a member and honorary chairwoman of the South Hampton Roads YWCA.

From 1994 to 2002, mrs. Goode served on the Board of Trustees of the Chrysler museum of Art in Norfolk, one of the major art museums in the southeastern United States.

mrs. Goode and her husband established a gift in memory of mr. The center, a campus resource that offers writing support, tutoring services, academic enhancement services and other support for students, was dedicated in 2008.

senIor class 2011 campaIgnThrough their campaign efforts, members of the Class of 2011 wanted to make a difference,

leave a legacy, and help the ’Noke experience continue. Students chose to do this by donating to the Senior Class Endowed Scholarship because they knew it would support one of their own —

a fellow maroon. Funds from the Senior Class Endowed Scholarship are awarded to a rising senior with financial need. Listed below are the seniors who participated in the Class of 2011 Campaign:

The Roanoke College Mace

The Roanoke mace was presented to the College in 1996 by the four daughters of Hartselle DeBurney Kinsey ’21. The mace is dedicated to Mr. Kinsey, who was devoted to Roanoke College as a student, teacher, advocate and trustee.

Maces date back to the Middle Ages, when they were used as weapons. Today, they are primarily symbols of academic authority used at formal convocations and commencement ceremonies.

Roanoke College’s mace was designed by Susannah Wagner, a British-trained goldsmith and jeweler in Ashland, Virginia. Also involved in its making were a jeweler, engraver, stonecutter, glass- blower and wood crafter. The mace features a sterling silver headpiece, which is adorned with garnets and engraved symbols representing subjects cherished by Mr. Kinsey, an American walnut baluster (or wooden stem) and a medallion engraved with a replica of the College seal on one side and the symbol of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on the reverse. A maroon hand-blown glass globe honoring the College colors rests inside the sterling silver cage of the headpiece. The cage features architectural elements from Miller Hall and rests on a base that includes a fleur-de-lis pattern found in wrought ironwork around campus.

The Roanoke College Seal

The seal of the College was redesigned by Guy A. Ritter, Jr., Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion Emeritus. It was approved by the Board of

Trustees in April of 1964. It features a shield in national blue emblazoned with a mandarin yellow cross, representing

Roanoke College’s relationship with the Lutheran Church. The cross symbolizes the Christian values inherent in our culture, and above it is the lamp of knowledge. The white dogwood flower on the shield symbolizes the State of Virginia. The motto, “PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT,” means

“Let him who earns the palm wear it.” The palm is symbolic of the palm leaf that was given in

honor of excellence in ancient Greece.
