TWENTY-FORTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 13, 2020
EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT HELP REQUEST My name is Simon Monsour. I have been involved in PSR, Altar Serving and the Boy Scouts for the past six years. I am fast approaching the achievement of my final rank of Eagle Scout and the step of my Eagle Scout Service Project. Ever since I achieved the rank below Eagle Scout, I have been seeking ways to use this service project for the benefit of St. Bernard’s. After speaking with our pastor, Father Chris, and with certain members of the Parish, I have decided to create an outdoor shrine to Saint Oscar Romero. I have made this choice for a number of reasons, the most important of which is to provide a focus of devotion for the Hispanic community at St. Bernard’s.
Saint Oscar Romero was a Catholic Bishop who spoke out against economic disparity, social injustice, and political assassinations within the anti-Catholic government of El Salvador. He advocated Human Rights, was assassinated in 1980, and was canonized in 2018. Today, he is
remembered as a shining beacon of Catholic ideals and a courageous champion of justice for all.
The Shrine I want to build will be located in the area around the Peace Pole (to your right as you drive into the Parish parking lot). It will include a central image of Saint Oscar Romero, an abundance of new flowers, ground cover, mulch and stepping stones. Some of these materials are already being generously offered for donation, decreasing the cost of this project to a good degree. Yet I am still in need of financial help. I am hoping to raise around $500 to pay for the materials and supplies I will need. There will be red boxes on the tables by the exits of St. Bernard’s and St. Mary’s before and after the masses for September 13th and 20th. Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to St. Bernard's Parish.
I hope to break ground on September 25th and conclude the next day. Volunteers are welcome, but I ask that you please contact me beforehand, as I already have a good number of my fellow Troop members to work with. My cell phone number is 330-715-7017. Email is [email protected].
Thank you all so much for your constant generosity with St. Bernard’s and St. Mary’s. It means so much to me to be able to direct and execute such an ambitious project for my faith community. God bless you!
– Simon Monsour
Do You Have Questions About Becoming Catholic?Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic?
Maybe you wonder who God is. Or maybe you want to understand whether the Catholic Christian understanding of Jesus makes sense. Maybe you have already been baptized as a Roman Catholic or in another Christian tradition and wonder what it takes to complete your Sacraments of Initiation. It’s only natural to have questions.
It is also understandable that you may want a few basic answers before making any kind of commitment. Here is your opportunity. St. Bernard’s Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) will hold an inquiry meeting on Thursday, September 24; at 7:00 p.m. in the Newman Center above the parish offices. PLEASE WEAR YOIUR MASK, AND PLAN TO OBSERVE APPROPRIATE SOCIAL DISTANCING. If you have questions, call Jim Griggy at 330-773-1248 or leave a message at the parish office. ALL ARE WELCOME!Regular RCIA Meetings will begin Sunday, October 4, after the 10:00 a.m. Mass.
Friends of St. Bernard Cemetery,The Cleanup Day will be Saturday, September 19 from 9:00 a.m. until around 11:30 a.m. Doughnuts will be provided at 8:45 a.m. Projects include:
• Filling in 5 large sunken graves• Litter cleanup• Clean along front fence line• Resetting many tipped gravestones
High School Faith FormationSt. Bernard Parish will be offering a Faith Formation Program (PSR) for high school students again this year based on the Life in the Holy Spirit by Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR. It will be held on Sundays from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at St Bernard’s History Room beginning on September 27th. The program is intended to help teenagers understand and live their faith more fully, to challenge them personally and to grow in their relationship with our Lord. More simply, they will learn how to nurture their relationship with the Holy Spirit. To register or seek additional information, please call the parish office at 330-253-5161 or John Zmurk at 330-867-1267.

Ring The Bells Akron: Friday, September 18In honor of essential workers and the teachers, St. Bernard and St. Mary Parishes will be ringing their church bells from 1:00-1:05 p.m. We ask when you hear the bells you say a special prayer for the community and the essential workers.
Holy Land Carvings Coming September 19th and 20thDue to the bad situation and the interruption of the tourist trade, hundreds families of the Holy Land are in danger of having to leave their homes in search of work. Some Christians who make their livelihood through the selling of their hand-carved olive wood religious items are depending on us to bring these beautiful carvings, such as, nativity scenes, crucifixes, pictures of the Last Supper, and several other religious items to you.
Please look over these carvings that are available to you the weekend of September 19th & 20th, 2020 and help support this project that helps keep Christians present in the Holy Land. Your help and understanding in this crucial matter are greatly appreciated. We are accepting cash, checks and credit cards.

This weekend in our bulletins, we have the first of many thoughts that will occasionally come to help us on our way to WAKE UP THE VOTE! Previous elections have done everything else; Rock The Vote; Get Out The Vote, Etc. According to the United States Election Project and the US Census Bureau, in 2016, 138 million Americans (58.1% of the voting-eligible population) actually voted. This is down from 2012 (58.6%), which in turn was down from 2008 (61.6%) which in turn was down from 2004 (64%)! Are we falling asleep at the wheel of democracy?

AROUND THE DIOCESE
TWENTY-FORTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 13, 2020
As a people of faith, we must be aware of our stance on all issues and find the candidates that will best champion them. Unfortunately, this does not come easy. In any given contest, it often seems that our main issues are championed in equal measure among the two or three main candidates for the office, but not all of them in one candidate. It would be SO NICE if we could have a Catholic candidate who stood for all of the Catholic Church’s principles!!! There is one parishioner who is now thinking about becoming one. I pray for her and for all of you who would equally be so brave! I would do whatever I could to help you in your leadership. For the rest of us who will not run for office and for all of us who will vote, here are the first reminders how to vote from our United States Bishops’ website in the “Issues and Action” section and in the document on voting, “Faithful Citizenship.” “The principle that each and every human life has inherent dignity, and thus must be treated with the respect due to a human person is the foundation for the Church's social doctrine, including its teachings on war, the use of capital punishment, euthanasia, health care, poverty and immigration. Conversely, to claim that some live human beings do not deserve respect or should not be treated as "persons" (based on changeable factors such as age, condition, location, or lack of mental or physical abilities) is to deny the very idea of inherent human rights. Such a claim undermines respect for the lives of many vulnerable people before and after birth.”
Father Frank, Deacon Ray and I will do our best to WAKE UP THE VOTE among our St. Mary and St. Bernard communities between now and the November elections. Please do your best to be awake to your importance this election. Be ALERT to the candidates’ positions on issues AND to the Church’s teachings on issues. Be ACTIVE in voting and encouraging others to vote! The world needs more Lerts; BE A LERT!
Please read on for excerpts from the bishops’ document and their website on voting, www.FaithfulCitizenship.org. We will continue to review it piece by piece in the weeks to come. Special thanks to Father Frank who suggested we begin reviewing these items sooner than later to help us absentee vote!
Have a Blessed Week! –Father Chris
How Can Catholic Social Teaching Help Guide Our Participation?
In the words of Pope Francis, “progress in building a people in peace, justice and fraternity depends on four principles related to constant tensions present in every social reality. These derive from the pillars of the Church’s social doctrine, which serve as ‘primary and fundamental parameters of reference for interpreting and evaluating social phenomena’” (Joy of The Gospel 221).
The four principles include the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity. Taken together, these principles provide a moral framework for Catholic engagement in advancing what we have called a “consistent ethic of life” (Living the Gospel of Life, no. 22).
Rightly understood, this ethic does not treat all issues as morally equivalent; nor does it reduce Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It anchors the Catholic commitment to defend human life and other human rights, from conception until natural death, in the fundamental obligation to respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God. Catholic voters should use Catholic teaching to examine candidates’ positions on issues and should consider candidates’ integrity, philosophy, and performance. It is important for all citizens “to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest” (USCCB, Living the Gospel of Life, no. 33).
The Church and the Political OrderThe Church’s obligation to participate in shaping the
moral character of society is a requirement of our faith. It is a basic part of the mission we have received from Jesus Christ, who offers a vision of life revealed to us in Sacred Scripture and Tradition. To echo the teaching of the Second Vatican Council: Christ, the Word made flesh, in showing us the Father’s love, also shows us what it truly means to be human
Christ’s love for us lets us see our human dignity in full clarity and compels us to love our neighbors as he has loved us. Christ, the Teacher, shows us what is true and good, that is, what is in accord with our human nature as free, intelligent beings created in God’s image and likeness and endowed by the Creator with dignity and rights.
Political ResponsibilityOur nation’s tradition of pluralism is enhanced,
not threatened, when religious groups and people of faith bring their convictions and concerns into public life. Indeed, our Church’s teaching is in accord with the foundational values that have shaped our nation’s history: “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
The Church equips its members to address political and social questions by helping them to develop a well-formed conscience. Catholics have a serious and lifelong obligation to for their consiences in accord with human reason and the teaching of the church.
