One Beautiful Weekend!By Kate Weigant

On a hot and sunny Sunday, August 17, a number of Skyliners must have left the Sheraton Airport Hotel with warm thoughts of a successful club-sponsored Weekend that was winding down. If you missed it, too bad! Plan to take part next year. Portlandia 2014 was a huge success. It was one of our guests from California who referred to it as “a beautiful weekend.”

chair, Megan Lukens. Steering the ship calls on many talents! Megan organized our early-bird dinner on Thursday at The Deck, and could be found driving out-of-towners around before, during, and after the weekend. Kate Weigant (that’s me) did the planning and purchas-ing for the lively after-hours gatherings.

Dan and Gayle Stout came all the way from sunny Minnesota to be part of the festivities. Here they lift a stein at Der Rheinlander at dinner on Saturday night.

Kathleen Cairns-SchafferKathleen Bridget Ann Cairns-Schaffer passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the age of 63.

Kathy was born in Los Angeles, California, to Catherine Espinosa in 1951. She was raised in Los Angeles and moved to Oregon with her children, Sheri and Darrin, in 1973. She was an active member of her church and gifted singer. While achieving professional successes in her career at Tri-Met, her greatest

joy and source of pride was her family.

Kathy retired from Tri-Met and moved on to become a well-respected spiritual counselor. She enjoyed and cherished working with people and helping them discover, re-define, and clarify their life path.

She leaves behind her husband, John Schaffer; son, Darrin LaFleur; daughter, Sheri Karpa; daughter-in-law, Lori LaFleur; step-son, Brent Richford; grandchildren Brody LaFleur, Kayla LaFleur, Jason Karpa and Jeremy Karpa; and sister, Cassandra Cairns.

A Celebration of her life was held at Taque-ria Nueve on Monday, August 25. It was an open-house style gathering. Several Skyliners were able to attend and offer John our deep condolences.

Kathy will be remembered in love as a treasured wife, mother, and friend.

John and Kathy generously entertained the Portland Skyliners in their charming backyard on numerous occasions.

Mary Smith kept track of the registrations, organized a kayak outing for Saturday afternoon, and made some gorgeous goodies for After Hours. Susan Kelsey assisted with tracking the reservations and organizing our finances. Sharon Speer planned and organized all of the interesting options we had for day trips on Saturday. This was our core committee for the weekend.

Of course the committee wouldn’t have been able to function without the able-bodied help of many Skyliners who volunteered to help.

• Registration: Jeff Jennings was on hand to volunteer time at the registration table.

• Transportation to Tony Starlight’s was made possible by Megan Lukens who was able to get the bus donated by her employer for Friday night with Megan serving as bus driver.

• After-hours: Frank Jones assisted with the after-hours setup both Friday and Saturday nights and Doug Robinson (Skyliners Prez) came early to help set up on Friday. Doug Robinson and Will Werner also helped the committee by clearing the after-hours suite on Sunday. Jim Miles contributed his expertise as licensed bartender on both nights. Thanks to Jim, I got to sit down! Jeff Jennings helped get things started in the bar on Friday. Betty Prakken mixed up and served a well-received “Terminator Shake” on Saturday. Vickie Nokleby and Anne Greif baked cookies and brownies for the dessert bar. Susan Kelsey made her superb ranch dip to go with veggie trays, and she

set up the buffet on Friday. Bob Weigant did delivery and pick-up of food items on both nights. Sonja Sample sent us her recipe for authentic cucumber salad (Gurkensalat); it was a hit even with me making it! —continued on page 4

• Saturday Side Trips: Our trip leaders and drivers made our excursions possible. George Iliff and Shirley Vincent (our members who live in Florida) sponsored the afternoon at the movies. Sharon Speer, Frank Jones, and Betty Prakken provided transportation for a tour of the Columbia Gorge to Hood River and back. A change in venue for the PT boat tour resulted in group leader Jim Mitchell being unavailable to transport people to the PT boat. Fortunately, Ken Johnson of the Seattle Tip Toppers had driven to the Weekend and offered to give everyone a ride. Will Werner led a group downtown for the “Secrets of Portlandia” tour on Saturday morning. Mary Smith organized and led the kayak adventure. Cheryl Ausmann-Moreno came to the aid of some who missed their ride and got them to their destinations. And although their services weren’t required, it was important and appreciated that Maggie Anderson and Cynthia King showed up as backup drivers in case we needed another driver or two. —continued on page 5

Thanks to each of you who has already returned your membership renewal! And if you haven’t returned yours yet, hope you can take a moment to do so soon.

Membership ReportSharon Speer

I have received 49 renewals; that means there are 31 renewals yet to come in. Hopefully everyone who needs to renew will do so soon. If I don’t receive your renewal before the October newsletter is emailed, which should be sometime the last week of September, you will no longer receive the newsletter. However,

Todd Allen 6’5” Todd is a returning Skyliner. Many times Todd has helped the club by providing flowers for club events that needed decorations including an Oktoberfest at Shelley’s where ladies made flower wreaths to wear, pageants, and our reunion party in 2005. He works for a flower wholesale company. Todd is highly interested in the study of history, politics, religion, and philosophy and enjoys music and dancing.

Anne Boutwell 5’10”

Anne is a lifetime member of the Skyliners who took off a couple of years to be on the board of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This year she has completed her renewal form and plans to start coming to events again. She’s off to a good start by attending Portlandia Weekend! Anne is an artist.

Sandra James 5’10-1/2” Sandra stumbled onto our meetup page and decided to sign up. Her first event was attending the combination hike, social hour, and dessert party at Kate and Bob’s last June where Bob measured her. She said she was 5’10½” and was measured in at exactly that. Sandra recently attended the party at Betty Prakken’s becoming eligible for membership. She studied Business/Accounting at the University of Oregon and currently works for DEQ. She has three children—one in college and two in grad school.

Sheryl Lutz 5’11-1/2”

Sheryl was invited by Megan to attend the Halloween party last year. Since then, she has attended several Third Friday Pizza nights, the Portland Spirit 80’s Dance Cruise, and hosted a free class in Water Aerobics at Matt Dishman Rec Center. Sheryl is Principal Broker and Real Estate Consultant at Keller Williams Realty Professionals and also works as an Aqua Fitness Instructor at Villasport Athletic Club and Spa in Beaverton and Aquatics at Multnomah Athletic Club. Megan had the honor of measuring her to qualify for membership.

once you renew, we can provide back copies and put you on the newsletter email list again.

I’m pleased to report that this month we have two returning members and two new members bringing our membership total to 85.

Welcome new members!

Betty Prakken’s House Party August 2

It was a little hard to tell which was more popular—Jim’s latest drone, or the bubbles that Betty provided for our entertainment.

There was the usual great spread.

More of us got to meet Robert Hicks, a prospective member.

The Willamette River view from Betty’s knocks your socks off.

Best of all, the weather was perfect for taking the party outdoors!

Congratulations to Sharon Speer and Jim Mitchell—each awarded a much deserved Tall Clubs International™ Merit Award! Each Tall Clubs International™ affiliate club is allowed to nominate up to two of its individual members for recognition by TCI for their generous contributions toward the success of Tall Clubs. The TCI Merit Award winners are announced at the TCI Convention each year.

This year, your Skyliners Board nominated two of our members who have put years of heart and soul into making our club one of the best!

Jim Michell has served on the Board as President and VP. He has hosted more parties than you can count, and most memorably, he turned us loose to build our prize-winning Starlight Parade floats at his place—for at least a dozen years!

Sharon Speer has done so much for our club over the years that she has even been nominated (and will be again) for a TCI Lifetime Achievement Award. Many of our members count her dedicated recruiting effort as the main reason they joined the Skyliners.

We are so fortunate to have members like Jim and Sharon!

Barb Sherman’s House Party Barb’s deck was well tested for strength when everyone showed up for a perfect evening at her house on August 23. For some reason, people were reluctant to cut into the “hamburger” cake, but they had no problem eating the “French fries.”

Note: Minutes of the August 2014 Portland Skyliners Board Meeting will be included in the October issue of Skylinees. They will be approved at the September 13 meeting.

This stunning exhibition explores the art, design, and evolution of Paris’ most famous garden. It also celebrates garden designer André Le Nôtre (1613–1700)—best known for his grand perspectives and symmetry at the chateaux gardens of Versailles.

The Tuileries, which stretches from the Louvre to the Place de la Concorde in central Paris, was originally created in 1564 in the Italian style and became the city’s first public park in 1667. Created at the behest of Queen Catherine de’ Medici, the garden was designed to enhance the Tuileries Palace, which was destroyed by fire in the 1871 uprising known as the Paris Commune.

Originally, the garden was reserved exclusively for royalty, but starting in the late 17th century, it became increasingly accessible to the public. Art has played a critical role in the history of the Tuileries Garden. Its beauty has inspired generations of artists, and it has also functioned as an outdoor museum with works from the classical to the contemporary dotting its vast grounds. This major exhibition will present more than 100 sculptures, paintings, photographs, and drawings by some of the most acclaimed European and American artists from the 17th to the 20th centuries, including works by Pissarro, Édouard Manet, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others who have taken inspiration from the iconic Parisian landmark. Visitors will also see monumental sculpture by Coysevox and Bosio from the garden for the first time in the United States.

Friday, September 12 • 6 p.m.Vaux’s Swift Watch at Chapman SchoolEvery year in late August, one of Portland’s most spectacular natural events begins: Thousands of Vaux’s Swifts gather in the city as they prepare to migrate to Central America and Venezuela. Migrating swifts often use chimneys as roosts (places to sleep), and they are likely to return to the same roost year after year. One swift population has been returning to the Chapman chimney since the 1980s, and it is one of the largest known roosting sites of migrating Vaux’s Swifts.

On most evenings, Audubon volunteers will be on hand to share information about Vaux’s Swifts.

Reminder—It’s always good to do a little inventory of what you take to a party so that you don’t go home missing something.

Unbounded energy with a crowd, Bottleneck has often performed three-hour sets with no breaks to keep the dance floor moving. “I’ve never seen a band do that before” raved staff at Portland’s Blue Diamond. Bottleneck brings something for everyone. The band feeds off the energy that comes from real audience involvement. “They have an infectious groove and contagious energy” remarked one couple.

Camping Trip at Mount RanierThe end of July, a small camping crew of three made it to Mount Rainier. Sharon Speer, Jackie Budge, and Ken Geddes enjoyed fantastic weather Friday-Sunday. Unfortunately by arriving on Thursday, Ken and Jackie had to set up camp in the rain. Nomads Larry Kucharek and his daughter Katie from the Las Vegas Tall Club had hoped to join the group, but were unable to hook up with them due to a lack of cell phone reception.
