Over the 3 days we were presented by numerous speakers on educational trends that are occurring at the moment and how schools can best prepare our students for the future. The Director General of the education depart- ment Mr Tony Cook opened the conference praising schools for their hard work and im- provement over the last several years. The focus for the department will be to continue the work we have started with many countries around the world now using the processes and procedures that Education Queensland has employed over the last 4 or so years. Mr Tony Cook is somewhat of a local around these parts attending school in Dalby with a history in early childhood education. It is this passion for early childhood education which will continue our steady improvement in the years to come. At the conference dinner on Tuesday night the guest speaker was Olympic athlete Anna Meares. Anna described the processes she went through for each Olympic Games and the strategy employed to be successful. An inter- esting point that Anna made was that she com- peted for over 10 years and she only ever won 11 times with countless times just missing out on the gold medal at numerous events. She made a point that in order to succeed she needed to learn from those losses in order to devise a strategy for the next event to give her a higher chance of succeeding. Anna noted that there was no guarantee that she would win but she trusted the process each time to come away with 6 Olympic medals of which 2 were gold. Another speaker of note that has had a fair bit of influence on the direction our education sys- tem has taken is Professor John Hattie. Pro- fessor Hattie is currently a Professor of Educa- tion at the University of Melbourne. Professor Hattie praised Queenslands growth which now leads the country. Professor Hatties main message at the conference was to maximise the impact that schools are having by applying high yield strategies more often to ensure stu- dents are improving more than 12 months in any given year. Bell Triathlon Preparations are currently underway for the 2nd Bell Triathlon on Saturday 23rd March. Last years event was very successful with about 120 competitors. If you are able to as- sist in the preparation or volunteer on the day please let Brendan Fullagar know or anyone on the P&C and Swim Clubs to ensure we can continue to build this event for the future. It was great seeing so many students compete in the event so with a few weeks remaining its not too late to get some training in. Have a good week, Jason.
