Since 2000, 3HC has hosted Wings Camp, a weekend-long experience filled with traditions, fun, and grief education activities. 3HC’s goals are to help address the special needs of grieving children ages 8-16. The camp provides the tools to help heal hearts. This year, the Crystal Coast Foundation sponsored Wings Camp. We registered 34 campers and 25 volunteers or “camper buddies.” This year’s camp was held at Camp Albemarle in Newport, NC. Wings Camp children are comforted knowing that they all share similar experience. Campers are given the opportu- nity to express their feelings in a safe environment. They are provided the tools and resources needed during and after camp, including memories and friendships that last for a lifetime. Camp was kicked off with karaoke, games, and s 'mores. Dr. Robin King-Thiele and Dr. Francine Anderson, PhD joined us on Saturday for our medical question and answer session. The campers felt free to ask questions. Some questions that were asked were, “Why did the doctor give up on my love one?” “What is cancer?” We proceeded with several group sessions about the different stages of grief. We also played basketball, kickball, climbed the tower, kayaked, and canoed. On Sunday, we concluded camp with our memorial service, parent support group, family lunch, and balloon release. Grief can teach us about the strength that resides within. The kids were taught how to recognize their feelings are real, support each other, and express their feelings appropriately. The strength that was gained, the relationships that were formed, and the memories we all shared were remarkable. We thank all of our wonderful volunteers that helped make the camp such a success! It was a great pleasure joining forces with the Campbell Internal School of Medicine. This was the first year that we had the largest medical team participate at Wings Camp! There will more information on the 2015 Wings Camp in our next edition.

Since 2000, 3HC has hosted Wings Camp, a weekend-long experience filled with traditions, fun, and grief education

activities. 3HC’s goals are to help address the special needs of grieving children ages 8-16. The camp provides the

tools to help heal hearts. This year, the Crystal Coast Foundation sponsored Wings Camp. We registered 34 campers

and 25 volunteers or “camper buddies.” This year’s camp was held at Camp Albemarle in Newport, NC.

Wings Camp children are comforted knowing that they all share similar experience. Campers are given the opportu-

nity to express their feelings in a safe environment. They are provided the tools and resources needed during and

after camp, including memories and friendships that last for a lifetime.

Camp was kicked off with karaoke, games, and s 'mores. Dr. Robin King-Thiele and Dr. Francine Anderson, PhD

joined us on Saturday for our medical question and answer session. The campers felt free to ask questions. Some

questions that were asked were, “Why did the doctor give up on my love one?” “What is cancer?” We proceeded

with several group sessions about the different stages of grief. We also played basketball, kickball, climbed the

tower, kayaked, and canoed. On Sunday, we concluded camp with our memorial service, parent support group,

family lunch, and balloon release.

Grief can teach us about the strength that resides within. The kids were taught how to recognize their feelings are

real, support each other, and express their feelings appropriately. The strength that was gained, the relationships

that were formed, and the memories we all shared were remarkable.

We thank all of our wonderful volunteers that helped make the camp such a success! It was a great pleasure joining

forces with the Campbell Internal School of Medicine. This was the first year that we had the largest medical team

participate at Wings Camp! There will more information on the 2015 Wings Camp in our next edition.

On September 26, 2014, 3HC hosted the 20th

Annual Golf Tournament,

the Kitty Classic. Proceeds from the tournament benefitted Kitty Askins

Hospice Center and the hospice programs of 3HC. The tournament was

held at Walnut Creek Country Club and sponsored by BB&T Insurance

Services, Highway 55, Quiznos Subs, and SW Promotions. The event was

a success with both morning and afternoon players eager to tee off! This

year, 25 teams entered the tournament!

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the tournament, each golfer was

sized for a Taylor Made golf glove and a new contests were added. The

biggest contest was the Team Putt for Cash, with the possibility of a

team from the morning & afternoon rounds to win $5,000! Congrats to

our two finalist teams for this contest: Seymour Funeral Home in the

morning and Raymond James Financial in the afternoon!

At the end of the tournament, prizes were awarded for the first, second

and third place teams for net score and first place for gross score. A big

congrats goes out to the winning teams, (Net Scores) 1st

place- Southern

Pharmacy, 2nd

place- Merrill Lynch, 3rd

place- BB&T Insurance Services;

(Gross Scores): 1st

A huge 3HC thanks goes out to Johnnie Brown of Quiznos Subs, event

chair, and the entire golf committee: Todd Williams (BB&T Insurance Ser-

vices), Sandra Bond (Highway 55), Stewart Bryan (SW Promotions), Hope

Lewis, Mary Ann Howell, Neal Benton, and Ed Holt. We are also very

thankful for our volunteers that worked so hard during the tournament

to make the day grand!
