Directors Note:

“The end is nothing; the road is all.”- Willa Cather

This quote appears at the beginning of S.R. Bindler’s 1997 documentary, Hands on A Hardbody, which serves as source material for the scrappy, un-conventional musical of the same title. Both the documentary and the mu-sical follow the lives of ten contestants battling to win a hardbody truck in an exhausting endurance contest. However, the gloss, glitter and fantasy generally associated with commercial musical theatre is blown away in this production of Hands on a Hardbody. This show is a sincere and gritty story that questions the validity and obtainability of the American Dream in our troubled world. Our production works hard to preserve the integrity of the real life people on which it is based, as well as illuminate the documentary’s vast social commentary. As the musical progresses, the contestants potently discover that the contest is about much more than winning a brand new hardbody. The truck represents the bleeding hearts of ten life-worn people, all trying to grasp a sliver of hope in the face of a horrendous economic downturn, racial tensions, and the devastation of war. Sound familiar? For many of us living in the south, the issues explored in this musical hit very close to home. GTCC’s Hands on a Hardbody proves that when words fail, music can speak to the depths of our souls. During this time of deep divisiveness in our country, the authentic connections forged between the contestants show us that love and shared experience can brighten any dimming dream. Change is possible, and hope is alive, if only we can keep our hands on it.

Don’t let go…

About the GTCC Center for Creative and

Performing Arts Theatre Welcome to the new GTCC Center for Creative and Performing Arts Theatre. Located on the High Point Campus, this arts and entertainment venue will serve as an additional teaching lab and performance space for students enrolled in GTCC’s Creative and Performing Arts programs, comprised of entertainment technology, theatre and music. The two-story 11,705 square-foot-facility features a modified black box stage and theater seating for 82.

The Center for Creative and Performing Arts Theatre is the final piece in a long-time vision to create one centralized location for all of the Creative and Per-forming Arts programs and stimulate further collaboration between students on cross-departmental projects and performances.

In addition to the new theatre, the college also offers two performance venues: a major production studio with seating for an audience of 225; and an outdoor amphitheater accommodating 550.

GTCC is committed to developing students and the communities in which those students reside and study. The Center for Creative and Performing Arts is an integral part of that mission. The opening of the new Center for Creative and Performing ArtsTheatre will allow GTCC to partner closely with the High Point Theatre, High Point Area Arts Council, High Point Community Theatre and other arts partners in the City of High Point to revitalize and rebrand the south side of High Point.
