What’s in store for the online classroom of tomorrow? Many point to the convergence of the physical and virtual worlds. There’s been a lot of buzz around the future technologies that enable this, such as artificial intelligence and mixed reality, and their great potential to enhance learning experiences. Pearson and IBM are innovating with Watson APIs, education-specific diagnostics and remediation capabilities. Students will be able to dialogue with Watson in real time by asking questions on a particular topic. In another scenario, Watson will be able to search through an expanded set of education resources to retrieve relevant information to answer the student’s question. During the dialogue with the student, Watson will constantly assess the student’s responses and guide them with hints, feedback, and explanations while identifying common misconceptions.

HoloLens is a head-mounted mixed reality device manufactured by Microsoft. Mixed reality means a mixture of augmented and virtual reality. It allows you to see the world around you enhanced by either an immersive virtual environment or augmented elements that are superimposed over your environment. It’s one of the first devices in this area that doesn’t need to be tethered to a computer. This allows freedom for learners to explore and interact with a real-life space. Two or more HoloLens can be linked together so that a learner and instructor can look at the same 3D models or animations together, or several learners can collaborate on a project. The HoloLens also remembers where in space you have opened and placed different holograms and they will still be there if you re-enter the space.

Seemingly unrelated disciplines, from architecture to graphic design to learning design, share common design principles. These guiding principles are used to create products, services, and experiences that serve the needs of their audiences. By harnessing the power of effective user-centered design thinking, people can become better at solving problems, working in cross-functional teams, communicating ideas, and improving their work while creating more useful experiences. A motivating mantra for designers and especially learning designers is, “When you use design thinking to create solutions, you solve real user problems in ways that really matter to them.”
