It seems like ages since I last wrote this, but here we are with the nights drawing in and the evenings getting darker. I don’t know about you, but with dark, wet evenings like this, I like to spend a little more time at home. Especially after gallivanting about all over the place, spending many a great day at some of the fantastic events which were held in Kingston over the summer. I certainly need a rest!

Some of my personal favourites were the International Youth Arts Festival (IYAF). So many amazing acts, spread over just over two weeks. Then there was the cycling through Kingston (you might have seen our logos on a couple of the riders!), and who can forget the Kingston Food Festival, The Regatta, Thumbs Up Thursday and the river festival in Teddington? (I know, not strictly Kingston, but my mate runs it!) It’s only a shame that we didn’t get to round everything off with the much loved and sorely missed annual Kingston Carnival.

IT’S BACK......!!!

....I am pleased to tell you all that The Kingston Comedy Festival is returning for a second year!! We have already organised most of the administration for the Kingston Comedy Festival and we are pleased to announce that our festival returns on the 23rd October, and our 26th issue is being given up to Laugh Kingston as a festival gig guide, so keep your eyes peeled for all the amazing acts we have in store for you! I am really excited! we learnt a lot of lessons last year, and now have a solid base to build on. Please take a look at our website – www.kingstoncomedyfestival.com for further updates and news. I really hope you can join us, because all the profi t we make after event costs is going to Love Kingston. Last year we raised over £1,000 and this year we want to raise £5,000. We do however, really need some volunteers, so if you are free any time during the festival, please call me.

...And lets not forget to congratulate the tremendous efforts of Tudor Morris in his channel swim! He has now raised more than £15,000 for Momentum after months of training and an incredible at-sea experience, which you can read all about in the special feature on page 8 - Make sure you check it out!

Also, breaking news: We have spent a lot of the time over the summer working on our funky new website. As soon as we launch, you will fi nd that we’ll be offering something very useful. I can’t go into too much detail but please like our Omni Local Facebook page for further updates.

So until next month, many thanks for your continued support, and I hope this fi nds you all well.

Kind regards,

John

Hello everyone!

Lorna BaillieLorna Baillie is the Director of Everyone’s Theatre Company; formerly Opera di Nepotist.

In 2010, after two years of preparation, the company mounted three separate performances of Sweeney Todd in three different and extraordinary venues: Gough Square/Dr.Johnson’s House, just off of Fleet Street; the Rose Theatre, Kingston upon Thames; Normansfi eld Theatre, Teddington. All three were hugely challenging and amazing experiences, and that should have been that.

However this company, open to anyone who would like to take part, whether or not they have any previous experience or ability to read music, will be appearing at the Duke of York Theatre, St. Martin’s Lane, WC2 on Sunday 14th December, in support of The Railway Children Charity. Of course, the show has to be E. Nesbit’s The Railway Children (musical version), and we are very grateful to Julian Woolford (lyrics) and Richard John (music) for granting us special permission to perform this in the West End. With a view to donating as much as possible, raised from ticket sales to The Railway Children Charity, the company is running a crowdfunding campaign to cover the cost of this production. It is also putting on a pre-West End open rehearsal on performance on Saturday 27th September, ttba at St. Andrew’s Church.

As well as Sweeney Todd, previous productions have included Into the Woods at the Edinburgh Festival, The Bride of Seville at St. Luke’s Church, A Victorian Christmas on The Battersea Barge, and the company did a pantomime fl ashmob of The Nursemaid’s Tale in The Bentalls Centre last December. One of the biggest joys is seeing the thrill of the cast experience, and the huge sense of achievement at having pushed themselves well beyond their comfort zone. The audiences have always seemed to enjoy the experience, too!

POLICE ADVICE

Keep Your Possessions Safe

With the days growing shorter as we near the Autumn season, be sure to keep yourself safe on those late walks home. Below are some facts to help you do so.

Thieves frequently operate:

• At tube stations.

• At cash machines.

• In car parks.

• Around bus stations.

• In overcrowded areas, especially at rush hour.

Be aware and keep your possessions safe:

• Never leave your bags or other valuables unattended in public places.

• Be discreet with your belongings; displaying expensive jewellery or electronic devices, like mobile phones or cameras, could attract unwanted attention.

• Don’t make your mobile phone a moving target. Don’t tempt mobile phone thieves, be aware when making a call.

Reduce the risk of mobile phone theft by following these simple tips:

• Don’t leave your phone on tables in pubs or restaurants.

• When you leave a train or tube station don’t use your phone immediately, leave it a while.

• Don’t walk and text at the same time, you will be less aware of what is happening around you.

• Keep calls in public places as brief as possible, the longer you talk, the more likely you are to be spotted by a potential thief.

Be aware of chain-snatch thieves and keep your jewellery out of sight. Snatch robberies can involve violence or theft. The chance that this will ever happen to you is quite small, but you should be aware of what you can do to keep yourself and your property safe:

• Make sure your jewellery is not visible.

• Plan your journey in advance.

• Avoid dark or deserted areas late at night.

• Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert to what’s going on around you.

How to get your personal items security marked:

There are several ways you can mark you property to help protect your personal items further. If you have any information on stolen goods, report it to the police by calling 101. If it is an emergency dial 999.

SurreySave Credit Union:Aiding the Kingston Savers movement, one of Love Kingston’s “Pathways out of Poverty”

SurreySave launched over two years ago and was then given permission by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to extend its remit into the Borough. Prior to this, Kingston Savers had been set up by Kingston Voluntary Action in order to provide a better solution to money worries and to help put loan sharks into decline. As a credit union, SurreySave is regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority and all deposits are covered under the Financial Services Compensation scheme.

SurreySave credit union hits £1m in savings in two years

SurreySave has reached a major milestone just two years after opening. The credit union – which serves anyone who lives, works or studies in Surrey – launched in early 2012, and members had deposited their fi rst £1 million of savings by June 2014. Chief Executive of SurreySave CU Valerie Walwyn said, “This milestone refl ects the very strong support that SurreySave has always received from members interested in saving ethically.”

SurreySave has so far provided loans totalling over £800,000 to its local members and received many messages of thanks from those whose lives have been transformed by being able to access affordable credit. Over the last two months, the credit union has broken all its previous monthly loan records and issued £71,000 in loans during the month of July 2014. Plans for the future include a new apprenticeship scheme, improving the product portfolio and obtaining feedback on the services we offer.

About SurreySave:

SurreySave credit union is a community bank - a not-for-profi t fi nancial co-operative. It is owned and run by its members, providing an affordable and fl exible alternative to high cost fi nancial services. It also strives to help those who may be excluded from the fi nancial market due to requiring a small loan, being on a low income or because they do not have a perfect credit record.

THIS MONTH’S CHARITY

SurreySave offers:

• Online applications - so there’s no need to travel to the branch – or by post. • A friendly service with quick decisions • No hidden charges • No early repayment penalties • *Free life protection for loans (*conditions apply) • Cheaper loan rates than traditional high- cost lenders.

On July 27th I managed to become one of the few people to successfully complete a solo crossing from England to France. It took 15hrs, 53mins and more mental grit and determination than I have ever had to give in one day.

We got up at 5am; I devoured a bowl of porridge, bananas and honey and left the house at 6am, set for Dover. On the boat was my father John, my girlfriend Charlotte, my coach Fiona Southwell, our pilot Andy King, his co-pilot son James and the offi cial Channel Swimming Association verifi er,

Mick. We all boarded the Louise Jane and set out from Dover harbour.

I was layered up with SPF 50+ sunscreen, lanolin and Vaseline in all the places that might chafe (yum). A stuffed Shrek toy was attached to the mast and watched over me. I swam about 100m from the boat to the shore and raised my arms as the support boats horn blew at 9:20am to signify the start of the swim.

The fi rst 4/5 hours were pretty choppy, and we had postponed the swim start from 1am to 10am for this reason – I didn’t want to struggle through choppy waters at the end of the swim.

Before now I’d never been stung by a jellyfi sh, despite countless hours of training in open wa-ter, and many encounters. That didn’t last very long in the channel – I was stung fi rst of all on the back of my ear, neck and shoulder (when I swam straight through one) and again later on my ankle.

The channel is a mind bogglingly long distance to think about swimming, that you have to take it in small chunks. Every 30mins I would stop to tread water and eat soft, easy to swallow things like Jaffa cakes and bananas, as well as taking on board a warm carbohydrate-infused drink.

People often ask me what I think about when

Page 9: Omni local autumn edition 2014

9

OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames • Autumn 2014

I’m swimming. Eventually my swim technique depends on muscle memory and I run on ‘auto-pilot’. During which, I will think about anything from being in front of a warm fi re, to doing mental arithmetic in my head, and of course thinking about drawing because I’m so very arty.

At 10hrs in Fiona got in the water and swam beside me to keep my pace up as I’d slipped into a bit of a relaxing ‘plod’ – she had to make sure that I got enough speed up and covered enough ground to make the tide before it turned, otherwise I would have been stuck in the middle of the channel.

13hrs in, the night settled in. I could see the lights of France on the horizon – unbeknownst to me I had missed the last tide and my pilot was expecting me to be blown right off course and completely out to sea. I swam my heart out for those last three hours.

I was pushed across from the lighthouse at Cap Griz Nez in towards Sangatte. The familiar bea-con of the lighthouse that had been beckoning me was now out of view. The only thing I could see was an expanse of darkness ahead and be-low me, but I couldn’t let that get me down.

By this point I was swimming so hard that I couldn’t get enough oxygen. Everyone on board was shouting that I had nearly made it, that I was so close. I powered on through some pretty nasty pain in my shoulder. For those last

3hrs, I had to picture my mother swimming next to me and keeping me going.

I kept thinking in my head that there was no way I would be able to keep up this pace for much longer. My lungs were on fi re, I was wheezing, breathing as deeply as I could, try-ing to get the oxygen in. There was such a huge build-up of lactic acid in my muscles that I was cramping with every movement, but I couldn’t stop and stretch because the tide would just knock me back.

I saw the light on the cliff, and was just so tired that I kept looking up and making sure I was still getting closer. The dingy was near to escort me to the French shore, with the co-pilot and my coach Fiona shouting words of encourage-ment at me. I realised I was there, I had made it...

I shuffl ed onto the shore, where I could barely stand and raised my arm up to wave to the boat. I had made it to France! I collapsed on my hands and knees and slid back into the water and paddled out to the dingy. I was too ex-hausted to climb back into the boat so I had to hang off the side.

I was so relieved that it was over. It took the combined efforts of Dad, Charlotte and Fiona to get me dried and dressed into multiple lay-ers of hoodies/hats/gloves/ski socks, and I just fell asleep on the deck of the boat whilst we motored back to Dover.

Raise Money for Your Child’s School - The Creative Way!Everyone wants the best for their children, but whilst we can’t all teach, we can help raise valuable funds so that our child’s school has the resources it needs to give them the best possible all-round education. PDC Design and Print have been helping schools with their print needs for many years and we are specialists in marketing, design and the production of school prospectuses.

One of our most popular and best fund-raising items we produce is the school Christmas card. They can be really special and, if done correctly, can raise a very signifi cant sum of money for your child’s school. The secret is that grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and friends all love to receive a real card because it’s permanent, not ephemeral; it carries with it the thought, care and love of the sender who had to put some real effort and thought into preparing it, signing it and sending it. Imagine just how many fund-raising cards you would need to produce if every parent of a child at your school wanted to do that.

At PDC Design and Print we can show you how to make that possible. We will help you with the design, artwork, choice of card, ink colours, how to fi nish your card, and the best type of envelope. We will also advise on packing, help you decide on the pricing, and even the marketing of your cards. Plus of course, the best time to produce your cards. The important thing is to produce a Card that makes you proud; makes you want to send it to as many people as possible.

Now we know what some of you will be thinking. What about the planet? What about e-cards? All the card we use comes from sustainable sources and we have a wide range of recycled papers too. As for e-cards, well

COMMUNITYPROJECTS

we’re sure you’ll agree that there is no better feeling than getting a real Christmas Card in the post. It’s special, and we can hang it up for the twelve days of Christmas.

PDC Design and Print can advise you on the whole production process so that you can do most of the work. This makes you the most money. Or, we can do parts for you, or pretty much the whole job - the decision is yours.

To fi nd out which way will work best for you, call Robin Randall on 020 8547 0744 today for a no obligation meeting. Additional details can be found on our advert opposite.

Preparing Your Garden for the Winter Following the warm summer months, your

garden goes through a lot of changes, so you

should do your best to help it prepare. The

temperatures start dropping, meaning plants

are incapable of getting what they need, and

some have to prepare for dormancy. As long

as you make a point to clean up and remove

any dead plants, foliage of annual fl owers

or darkened stems, you will avoid keeping

around any disease pathogens or insect eggs

throughout the winter months. Now the

weather is cooling down, its the perfect time

to dig and box in some raised beds, or to tend

to anything that needs repairing.

Earthworms and microbes nestled in soil still

draw organic substances from any leftover

materials, such as decomposed mulch. Now is

the perfect time to spread newer mulch in a

thick layer to help protect your plants during

the cold season. As there is still plenty going

on beneath the soil and the roots of your

plants depend on moisture and protection, it

is essential that you provide full coverage. The

mulch helps to create an even temperature

for the soil. Snow can be a good source of

protection, with its ability to insulate the soil,

but it can also be overbearing in weight for

plants and tree branches (if we end up having

any snowfall this year!).

There are a lot of ways to care for different

fl ower breeds, so you need to do your research

on the best ways to maintain whatever plants

you have. For example, roses need a lot of

attention during growing seasons and need to

be prepared for winter. There is a lot less work

to do of course, if you live in an area with milder

winters. You should refrain from fertilising your

GARDENINGSECTION

roses a few months prior to the fi rst expected

frost, and avoid any serious pruning and

trimming, as it can induce more growth, which

won’t be able to withstand the cold conditions.

Remove any old mulch around the base and

water the roses well, replacing with new mulch

after the ground starts to freeze.

Make use of any fallen leaves in your garden,

as they can be a high-quality natural resource

for your plants. Allow the moist leaves to

decompose through the winter to contribute

to healthier soil. As long as you keep an eye

on things during the cooler months and keep

any pests away, your garden should be able

to keep its strength up during winter and

continue to grow beautiful and healthy when

the sun stops hiding. If you need help in pest

control or tree care, why not give Knockout

Pest Control or R J Trees a call?

doing all of the work myself, I decided to hire

another person to do the cleaning with me.

HOME SECTION

After many long days, I decided that I had

something really going here and I wanted

clients deserve to speak to somebody who

has cleaned a home before and takes pride in

her own business. Customer satisfaction is our

number one priority. It is not just a job for me,

it is so much more!

Customer satisfaction is key to our success.

The reason why our customers are always so

Car Care for the Coming WinterThere are a number of things to watch out for in the colder months, with less daylight, storms, blizzards and frosted windows. From diffi cult start ups in the morning to general maintenance, regular routine checks can not only reduce problems later, but can also result in less pollution, and improved mileage. Here are some tips to get you started:

Have a performance check up. Does the car stall sometimes? Are there rough starts or diminishes in power? Head to your nearest car repair and let the professionals take a look, as cold weather will only make things worse.

Add some de-icer. Whilst temperature starts to become an issue, de-icer will help to keep any moisture in the fuel line from freezing and causing blockage. Keeping a full gas tank will also help to prevent additional moisture.

Check the heater and defroster. These should be in good condition at all times in order to provide comfort for passengers and allow the driver to see better.

Take care of the windshield. Stock up on windshield washer, as you’ll need it a lot when it gets frosty. Also remember to keep an ice scraper with you, and replace old wiper blades (preferably with rubber-clad winter blades) to keep ice at bay.

Coolant. Anti-freeze levels should be well-monitored. Make sure you wait for the engine to cool down completely before removing the radiator cap.

Oil checks. Oil and fi lter checking is a necessity that tends to get overlooked, so be sure to keep an eye on things. Don’t forget to check transmission fl uid either.

Battery Checks. Get an accurate reading in order to determine a weak battery and make sure to wear protective gloves and goggles when doing a routine check yourself.

MOTORING SECTIONSupplied by: Leanna Carl

Exhaust Checks. Get the system examined for problems or leaks, as the fumes can be lethal inside your vehicle.

Brake checks. The safety reasons speak for themselves!

Winter tyres. Of course when mother nature starts getting angry, you may need a little help getting some grip. You wouldn’t want to hydroplane or to have issues getting the car moving, so get in early and winterize your wheels. Make sure they are never under-infl ated either, as they can cause your engine to work a lot harder than it needs to, eating up more gasoline in the long run.

Overall, just remember its better to be safe than sorry. Perhaps you could pack an emergency kit: fl ares, cat litter, gloves, boots, a torch, batteries, blankets, containers for gas trips, etc, particularly when going on long journeys or travelling at night. Stay safe on those roads!

RELEASE THE WRITER IN YOU! Want to write a book, short stories, maybe a play or a film? Want to tell the story of your life, the story of your holiday, or just a good old fashioned yarn to keep the children entertained?

Whatever you want to write, and whoever you want to write it for, I can help.

I’m a playwright, author and graduate of the University of East Anglia’s acclaimed school of Creative Writing.

I offer personal and online tuition that will teach you the building blocks at the heart of all good writing; finding ideas and turning them into stories, creating characters, writing dialogue, bringing settings to life, and capturing the action and adventure that lead to stories you just have to keep reading.

With practical exercises, homework assignments, and written feedback, you’ll put into practice what you’re learning, and see your stories come to life.

For further details contact me on 07917 226673 or email [email protected]

Feedback on courses;

‘Andy’s input has been invaluable. He helped with the first draft of a play, which improved dialogue and structure. The play has now been selected for the 2014 Southend Playwriting Festival.’

‘I found the course highly instructive. I now read, listen to and watch stories with more appreciation of the authors’ craft.’

…………………

Andy Moseley’s plays include A Bridge Game Too Far, winner of Arts Richmond’s 2011 new writing award, and Casual Encounters, which will be performed at London Theatre Workshop, 65 New Kings Road, Fulham on July 24 ahead of a two week run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Finished School... Not Sure What to do Next? For many of us, its hard to decide where to

go in order to move forward in our careers.

You want to work towards fulfi lling your

passions, whilst providing yourself with plenty

of support at the same time. Thinking about

the future and setting yourself up early can

be diffi cult, especially if you’re multi-talented

or have a lot of different interests. Hopefully

following this article, you’ll have more of an

idea what to think about and how to fi gure

out the best steps to take, either for you or to

advise someone you know.

Where do you see yourself in fi ve years?

No matter how many times you hear this

question, just remember, it doesn’t matter

whether you really get there in fi ve years. What

would you want right now? Its all about giving

yourself a glance into the future and realising

what would make you happy. Even if the

answer is different every time, thinking about

it will give you an insight into a long-term plan.

Its like asking someone to choose a movie.

You could have all these ideas circling with no

way of settling, but as soon as they pick one,

you usually tend to feel a slight sense of relief

or disappointment, meaning you had your

answer all along. This question can frustrate

and confuse those who have no idea what

SPECIAL FEATURESupplied by: Leanna Carl

they want for the future, but more often than

not, the ones who are forced to think about

it are the ones who surprise themselves with

their tremendous successes later in life.

What are your preferred job characteristics?

Think about the details in order to narrow

things down. First write out a list of every area

of industry that interests you. Next, you should

consider how far are you willing to commute,

especially if you are likely to struggle with

transport fares. Decide what hours you’re

looking to do, in case you need to fi t it around

work or home life, and do plenty of research

on what qualifi cations would be needed in

order to pursue things further. If you need the

experience but are reasonably stable in terms

of fi nance, you could look into unpaid/paid

internships to practice your skills and learn

new things. Sometimes just going and giving

things a try can help a lot more than reading

up on it, so see if there is any work experience

going in your area, if possible. A person who

has excelled in a job or volunteered for the

experience alone, without pay is a lot more

appealing to a potential employer because it

shows both dedication and motivation.

Find a tuition near you. Places like Kingston

University have a ton of courses beginning

early next year. Just because its the “Back to

School” month, it doesn’t mean you have

to wait another year to get the ball rolling.

You want to fi nd something that leads to the

qualifi cations you’ll need later, but make sure

its something you’re willing to commit to, and

that you’ll enjoy, especially if you’re shortening

your working hours to do so. If you’ve found

a course leading to something you’ve always

dreamed of doing, try not to let money worries

stand in the way of working hard at it, otherwise

you may regret it later. Going back and fi nding

your perfect course later in life can be more

diffi cult, as your responsibilities increase, the

costs can become more expensive and you’ll

wish you took advantage of the opportunities

whilst you were younger and a lot more freed

up. The important thing to remember however,

is that its never too late! Many of us change

career paths time and time again during our

lives, which is a good thing, because life is far

too short to end up doing something you don’t

love.

Consider all options. In the long run, fi nding

the next step is all about drive, commitment

and time-keeping. You could look into starting

an apprenticeship, as they are a great way to

earn while you learn. With a keen interest in

learning new things, fl exibility and skills in

your chosen fi eld, it could really lead to great

things later on. If a part-time course is what

you need, there are a lot of options to apply

whilst working part-time or starting projects

at home. Getting a commission-based job will

give you the maximum fl exibility to unlock

your potential and earning. For example,

taking a one day Solar PV Sales Training Course

to become a solar products salesperson.

This means supporting the initiative of the

GoSolar Foundation, a good cause to promote

solar energy - one of the major green energy

alternatives - which will also contribute to

protecting the planet and healing the world for

our children and future generations. It will also

give you a chance to meet the demand of the

upcoming business and ensure your long-term

future.

Discerning diners of Surbiton & Kingston once again have a brasserie style restaurant & wine bar at the heart of their community, serving freshly prepared food in a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere, and with a menu that will entice and cater for all palettes. The entire building has been renovated. Original features have been sympathetically restored and contemporary elements introduced, moulding together to deliver a charming and relaxed ambience. Situated on Ewell Road, Surbiton, Langleys was formerly one of the original Waitrose Stores from the turn of the last century and still boasts many original features.

The seasonal menu changes every three months and there is a weekly Specials Menu with a 2 course (£11.95) or 3 course (£14.95) lunch menu and 2 course (£14.95) and 3 course (£19.50) dinner menu. Each menu change is infl uenced by the produce from Langleys’ allotment and the chef looks forward to using the fresh pickings throughout the winter months. As Langleys menu changes, they always endeavour to keep their customers’ most favoured dishes, whilst adding enticing and adventurous alternatives.

Ladies Night continues to run on a Wednesday and has proven to be a great success. Tables of ladies receive a 3 course meal, a FREE wine all night for only £25.00 and will enjoy a chance to catch up with friends. It has been a popular addition and bookings need to be made well in advance, as these nights fi ll up very quickly.

A new addition to Langleys is the exciting cocktail list, created by their specialist cocktail barman. These have been thoroughly enjoyed by diners and those who have popped out for a drink. This cocktail menu will be tailored for the winter months and festive period, with the staff warmly welcoming people at the bar.

The Christmas Party Menu incorporates our customer’s most favoured dishes, along with the choice of wonderful traditional Christmas offerings. On many nights, live music will be enjoyed throughout the festive season and through to New Years Eve. Langleys will be open on Christmas day this year for the fi rst time and we look forward to offering a special day for families and friends. All menus will be available on their website.

With continued local support, Langleys has gone from strength to strength over the last year.

November Man

Bad Neighbours

Guns, explosions and a lot of fast-paced chases! Perfect for all you thrill-seekers, but probably not for the little ones! Based on Bill Granger’s novel, “There are No Spies” from the bestselling “November Man”

book series, this action-packed thriller is incredibly engaging and exciting. Starring ex-Bond-star Pierce Brosnan as Peter Devereaux, Code named “The November Man”, who is a retired CIA agent with an intense and troubled past.

After being called out of retirement to take on a personal mission, Devereaux is appointed to protect witness Alice Fournier (Olga Kurylenko), who knows the truth behind a long ongoing conspiracy and could potentially expose its secrets. Upon taking this assignment, he soon realises that he is now the target of his former CIA student David Mason (Luke Bracey) in a deadly game, with some high level CIA agents. There is talk of a mole in the agency too, which leads to even more danger and an inability for Devereaux to trust anyone. Its a full on, no rules, cat and mouse situation, but can he complete his mission?

wild fraternity (consisting of actors like Zac Efron and Dave Franco) moves in next door and wreaks havoc. Polite and welcoming as the boys are - they do NOT like to be asked to turn things down… Following some engagement in their antics, the couple realises they have a baby to take care of and that the party never seems to end. This forces them to take a stand, leading to all out war between houses, and some insane offence from both sides; meaning plenty of shock and laughter for us viewers. Its not an ideal fi lm for watching with the kids, but for teens and adults its got plenty of laughs.

This movie was hilariously entertaining. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne star as a couple of new parents living in a nice neighbourhood. They’re a little afraid to grow up and settle down, as they still have a spontaneous, youthful spirit inside them itching to go out and head to parties. Their world gets turned around when a

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Feeling Less Mobile?

Stiff Joints or Tight Muscles? As we get older (and by older, I am talking about the over 30’s) many of us seem to accept that with age, we will stiffen up and become less mobile. For many of you reading, you may be feeling the effects already. Do you struggle to put your socks on? Or to reach behind you to do up those bra straps? Don’t allow your body to slow down, do something about it!

Now, in my job as a Remedial and Sports Massage therapist, I see people of all ages. Some at just 40 years old are very stiff and suffer with various aches and pains all the time. While others at around 65 plus still have good fl exibility, regularly taking part in various sports and other activities. So it’s not just about age!

Referring back to the title, this is where it all starts. Its really all a bit chicken and egg. Joint stiffness will result in you restricting your movement, and this leads to the surrounding muscles tightening through lack of use. Tight Muscles will also restrict movement and cause the joints to stiffen up. This can create a downward spiral and it often starts much younger than you’d think. This process usually starts with the shortening of our muscles through our general inactivity.

As kids, we climbed, carried, ran, jumped, reached and generally stretched all of our muscles (although I’m not sure that today’s kids are quite as active). As we get older we are much less active, therefore our muscles aren’t used and stretched as much, so they end up shortening. Of course prevention is a great help, and activities such as yoga are an excellent way of keeping our muscles in good shape.

Most of us who are still working will already have shortened muscles, as well as protracted

shoulders from sitting at a PC all day, and tight muscles in our legs from sitting all day. A good therapist can identify muscular and joint dysfunction through postural assessment and range of motion tests. Using various soft tissue therapies such as massage, soft tissue release, muscle energy technique and passive joint mobilisation, they will be able to help you regain correct muscular and joint function.

If you then follow the advice they will give you in regards to regular exercises and stretching, there’s no reason to ever say, “I feel old” again!

Living in and Around KingstonThe Kingston rental market and surrounding areas - including Surbiton, Berrylands, Thames Ditton, Ham, Norbiton, Coombe and New Malden - continues to go from strength to strength. This is due to the abundance of good quality tenants - both private and corporate, looking to move into the area. In a nutshell, what most of these tenants like about this wonderful location is the benefi ts of living close to the capital, but without the hum drum hassle of actually living there…

Other benefi ts include Kingston’s fantastic shopping area, with riverside restaurants and bars, and beautiful outdoor space along the river - including the amazing Canbury Gardens in North Kingston and of course, Richmond Park. These locations have fantastic transport links, with fast trains into central London and great bus/road links. An ever-increasing factor as families expand is the access to good quality schools. A simple search of the school league tables and Ofsted reports will show the benefi ts of living within the catchment areas of these generally Outstanding schools.

Demand remains very high for properties in the area right now, with families predominantly being the driving factor as the new school year approaches. Good quality 1-2 bedroom fl ats are also in high demand for people moving up the property ladder. Kingston University students are also now actively looking for good-quality properties and they are prepared to pool resources to get the right ones, ideally close to the various campuses, ready for a term start date in September.

The lettings market will continue to be buoyant throughout Autumn, and although it is likely to slow down a little between November and February, there is no real dead time in these

PROPERTYSECTION

locations, just a gentle easing-off period throughout the winter.

If you are an investor, a landlord or perhaps a homeowner who wants to keep their current property as an investment whilst you purchase another, now is an excellent time to enter the market and take advantage of the high rental yields that can still be found.

At Alex Clark Sales and Lettings, we offer you the benefi t of over 25 years of experience in the property sector. All of our staff are local residents and have a real passion for what we do. As an experienced landlord myself with a modest property portfolio, I know only too well the need for providing a professional and effi cient high standard of service, with integrity, to both landlords and tenants at a very competitive price. Please check our customer reviews on Google and call now, for a free valuation of your property for either Sales or Lettings. ‘The difference between ordinary and extraordinary really is that little extra’...

Write the names of the pictures into the rows of the grid, and the highlighted squares will spell out an item of stationery.

Fit the mixed-up picture clues into the grid starting from the outer squares (we’ve put in some letters for you). If you do it correctly, the letters in the yellow squares, reading

clockwise, will reveal something you may get from school.
