Our parish Confirmations will be held on Monday, June 26 at 7pm in St. Nicholas Parish. The penitential act and confes-sions will be held on Monday, June 19 at 7:30pm, also in St. Nicholas.

The Annual Corpus Christi Food Collec-tion for the Poor will be taking place the week-ends of June 10-11 and 17-18 in our Parish. St. Mary’s is asked to collect cereal for both adults and children. Thank you.

St. Mary’s Assumption Church is in need of catechists for our re-ligious education program. We will provide the necessary training if needed. Thank you for your sup-port!

CATHOLIC CHARITIES—DIOCESE OF PATERSON
ANNUAL CORPUS CHRISTI FOOD COLLECTION FOR THE POOR
Due to unprecedented requests for assistance from Catholic Charities’
food pantries and in order to fulfill our obligations to the poor, Bishop Serratelli
has authorized a Diocesan wide food collection in all parishes and agencies on
the Feast of Corpus Christi, Saturday/Sunday, June 17-18, 2017. We will
start collecting on June 10-11, 2017. We are all being asked to bring assorted food products on
that day. St. Mary’s Assumption has been asked to provide cereal. Please mark the above
dates of June 10-11 and June 17-18 as the food collection day in order to help those in need in
our Diocesan community of Morris, Passaic, and Sussex Counties.
THAT JAMES COMEY SPEAKS AT THE CONGRESS WILL DEPEND ON THE PRESIDENT TRUMP INVOCATES "EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE"
The dismissal of James Comey on May 9, seven years before his tenure in charge of the FBI came to an end, sparked intense controversy and reaffirmed the conviction of many that President Trump and some of his closest collaborators established links with Russians to affect the candidacy of Democrat Hillary Clinton. Appealing to the "executive privilege" may prevent people from knowing things that the White House does not want others to know, but it would revive the memory of a fa-mous presidential privilege invoked in times of a scandal that for some has similarities; The one that Richard Nixon wanted to use in Watergate times.
What is executive privilege? It is a legal doctrine that allows the president to refuse to give in-formation to other branches of government (legislative and judicial). Although not enshrined in the Constitution, this right was recognized in 1974, when the Supreme Court sanctioned it in the case of Nixon v. United States, it could be used, but only in limited circumstances to protect the confidenti-ality of presidential communications.
When can it be invoked? The president must seek the written opinion of the Department of Jus-tice's legal counsel office. Once obtained, the president may order officials and even former officials not to disclose sensitive information.
When has it been done? The figure premiered with the first president, George Washington, when he wanted to prevent Congress from rummaging through the reasons for the failure of a mili-tary adventure of the newborn nation. The term was coined in the years of Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961), who managed to prevent the Senate from citing government officials in an investiga-tion into the supposed preferential treatment given to people close to the White House. In 1974, Nixon tried to attach himself to the privilege of not delivering to the Watergate case investigators a series of recordings made at the Oval Office. The Supreme Court determined that the interest of the justice was superior to the confidentiality of the presidency and ordered the delivery of the materi-als with which it was finally determined that the president was part of a cover-up.
In 2012, President Barack Obama also kept documents out of Congress's reach on an ill-fated arms smuggling operation in Mexico controlled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Weapons and Explo-sives.
What can President Trump argue? The White House could argue that the president's talks with his FBI chief should be kept confidential because they involve issues of national security and state secrets.
Can Comey ignore the order? Comey is not a civil servant and therefore has no obligations to the White House. There are no legal sanctions for an ex-official who does not respect the executive privilege, although it would be very unusual. As former intelligence chiefs often do when they are questioned by congressmen, there are answers that are reserved because they know they are incon-venient to give in public. Comey is not expected to do anything different.

CARIDADES CATÓLICAS-DIÓCESIS DE PATERSON
COLECCIÓN ANUAL DE COMIDA DE CORPUS CHRISTI PARA LOS POBRES
Debido a las solicitudes sin precedentes de asistencia de las despensas de las Caridades Católicas y para cumplir con nuestras obligaciones con los pobres, el Obispo Serratelli ha autorizado una co-lecta diocesana de alimentos en todas las parroquias y agencias en la Fiesta del Corpus Christi, el sábado y domingo 17 y 18 de junio, 2017. Comenzaremos a recolectar el 10-11 de junio de 2017. A to-
dos se nos pide traer productos alimenticios variados ese día. Se le ha pedido a la Asun-ción de María que proporcione cereales. Por favor, marque las fechas del 10 al 11 de junio y del 17 al 18 de junio como días de recolección de alimentos para ayudar a los necesitados en nuestra comunidad diocesana de los condados de Morris, Passaic y Sussex.
QUE JAMES COMEY HABLE EN EL CONGRESO DEPENDERÁ DE SI EL PRESIDENTE TRUMP INVOCA EL “PRIVILEGIO EJECUTIVO”
El despido de James Comey el 9 de mayo pasado, siete años antes de que se venciera su mando al frente del FBI, desato una intensa polémica y reafirmo la convicción de muchos de que el presidente Trump y algunos de sus más cercanos colaboradores establecieron vínculos con rusos para afectar la candidatura de la demócrata Hillary Clinton. Apelar al “privilegio ejecutivo” puede evitar que se sepan cosas que la Casa Blanca no quiere que se sepan, pero reactivaría el recuerdo de un famoso privilegio presidencial invocado en tiempos de un escandalo que para algunos tiene similitudes; el que quiso usar Richard Nixon en tiempos del Watergate.
¿Qué es el privilegio ejecutivo? Es una doctrina legal que permite al presidente negarse a dar información a otras ramas del gobierno (legislativo y judicial). Aunque no está consagrado en la Constitución, ese derecho quedo reconocido cuando en 1974 la Corte Suprema sancionó en el caso de Nixon v. EEUU que podía ser usado, pero solo en limitadas circunstancias para proteger la confi-dencialidad de comunicaciones presidenciales.
¿Cuándo se puede invocar? El presidente debe solicitar la opinión por escrito de la oficina de Consejo legal del Departamento de Justicia. Una vez obtenida, el presidente puede ordenar a fun-cionarios y hasta ex funcionarios no divulgar información sensible.
¿Cuándo se ha hecho? ¿Qué puede argumentar el presidente Trump? La Casa Blanca podría argumentar que las conversaciones del presidente con su jefe de FBI deben mantenerse confidenciales porque involu-cran cuestiones de seguridad nacional y secretos de Estado.
¿Puede Comey ignorar la orden? Comey no es funcionario público y por tanto no tiene obliga-ciones con la Casa Blanca. No hay sanciones legales para un ex funcionario que no respete el privile-gio ejecutivo, aunque sería muy inusual. Como suelen hacer ex jefes de inteligencia cuando son in-terpelados por los congresistas, hay respuestas que se reservan por que saben que son inconvenien-tes de dar en publico. No se espera que Comey haga algo distinto.
