OMET INTRODUCES NEW X-FLEX AT LABELEXPO EUROPE
HOW TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY OF NAPKINS MACHINES
Technical information and culture magazine by OMET Srl 2007 n. 9
On the one hand there are countries that have traditio-nally been technological leaders, like the United States or Canada: the fi rst enjoying a volume market, the second a more limited one with shorter runs. Then, on the other hand, there are the new tiger economies in the Far East, like China, which, while it is enjoying steady growth and has made top quality its target, is nevertheless forced to confront issues such as counterfeiting in the tobacco in-dustry. Closer to home, there are, on the one hand, young emerging markets in the Mediterranean area, like Alge-ria; while, on the other hand, there are the multinational groups that are strongly rooted in the Old Continent. In Italy too, both North and South, companies that are actively involved in their own markets are also looking for new business opportunities. This edition of Archipelago carries an extremely varied and detailed picture of the companies we deal with. The constant theme that runs through the magazine is ‘choice’. And, the choice that is made everywhere around the world is to be supported by Omet’s technology and service. This is important, and makes us feel really proud, because it is proof of how the market appreciates what we have achieved so far. Our path is one of constant product evolution, aimed at improving performance, increasing production fl exibility, encouraging a rapid payback on investment, reducing waste, and automating and managing processes to secure the highest quality. It is no coincidence then, that once again, innovation enjoys the widest coverage and the most pages in Archipelago. The future belongs to those who have the courage to keep looking ahead and accep-ting newer and newer challenges.

L’EVOLUZIONE della SPECIE
VARYFLEX-C AND VARYFLEX F1
Fin dalla prima presentazione al Labelexpo
Europe nel settembre 2001, OMET Varyfl ex,
ha rappresentato il punto di riferimento per
l’intero mercato, grazie alle sue soluzioni
innovative: motorizzazioni indipendenti, porta
cliché a sleeve, ampia gamma di materiali
lavorabili, esasperata stabilità e qualità di
stampa.
sistema gearless. Eppure, nei mesi scorsi sono
già state presentate due nuove versioni di
questo modello. Con questa ‘release’ – affer-
ma Angelo Bartesaghi, titolare della OMET
– abbiamo voluto incrementare le prestazioni,
migliorandone la fl essibilità di allestimento
nelle confi gurazioni richieste , semplifi cando-
ne l’utilizzo, ridurre drasticamente gli scarti
in avviamento, automatizzando questa fase
delicata, rendendola indipendente dall’abilità
dell’operatore grazie al sistema Vision (vedi
art. a pag. 34)”.
Since its launch at Labelexpo Europe in Sep-
tember 2001, the Omet Varyfl ex has become
a market leader thanks to its innovative solu-
tions: servo drive, inline printing sleeve tech-
nology, a wide substrate capability, and unri-
valled printing quality and stability. Above all,
the Varyfl ex has been Omet’s vehicle for intro-
ducing the gearless system into inline fl exo
printing. And yet, in the past few months,
two new versions of this model have been
unveiled. “With these new models”, affi rms

scarti all’avviamento.
nuova impaginazione e impostazione nell’in-
terfaccia operatore.
indipendente.
Ogni mandrino porta cliché é comandato da
nuove motorizzazioni Brushless e nuovi azio-tion time and setup waste, while enjoying fast
printing and die-cutting speeds.
Varyfl ex F1: the best for plastic fi lm and
paper
The new OMET Varyfl ex F1 has a neater, more
captivating design than previous models,
and thanks to Omet’s collaboration with
a renowned Italian designer, it also has a
smaller footprint (who should be optimised
depending on drying system required). It is
characterised by a new, shorter web path set
on a lower printing frame, which improves
ergonomics and perceptibly reduces the level
of waste and off cuts on start up. This ease of
use is aided by more practical web paths that
can be read by video cameras on the front
and back as well as from the new opera-
tor interface display. The new Varyfl ex F1 is

namenti elettronici che assicurano estrema
precisione di registro e rapidità di risposta,
permettendo di stampare formati infi nitamen-

Entrambe le macchine inoltre dispongono del
sistema “TRANSPARENT FACTORY - JUST ONE

correttivi on-line).

cartonboard (700 microns). It also has a new
independent control system. This allows each
printing sleeve to be controlled by new brush-
less SLM motors while new electronics ensure
maximum precision and response time to
allow variable print repeat lengths from 12 to
33 inches. Both machines have a system cre-
ated by Omet as ‘Transparent Factory – Single
Access Point’, which allows the connection of
Omet machines to the Ethernet for interaction
within companies via an intranet, and with
the whole world via the internet. The former
offers the collection of production data and
the storage and recall job details, while the
latter facility brings with it online diagnosis
and corrective inputs. Production fl exibility is
guaranteed by its modular construction, inter-
changeable print units, and the overhead rail
system that allows the converting units to be
confi gured in the most suitable sequence.

“In realtà, ci

full steam ahead!
“The market today is really pushing us to become a low cost producer,”
affi rmed William Weernink, Vice President of operations for Smyth Compa-
nies, Inc, recounting the history of the converting company, from gaining
ISO certifi cation and a Six Sigma program, to making great efforts to reduce
waste. “We really focused on the machine, and to reach the next level, we
needed a system that was servo driven”.
Then, last Autumn, the label manufacturer did just that with the fi rst US
installation of an Omet Varyfl ex UV-fl exo rotary screen press at its Minneapolis
headquarters. The 10-colour, 20.5 inch system, “is the next step up in terms
of technology for narrow and mid web machines”, added Weernink. “Its
servo driven operation means we can print high quality graphics quickly and
effi ciently”.
In 2007, Smyth Co celebrated 130 years in business, and today has fully
operational plants in Minnesota, Virginia and Colorado. With primary, glue
applied and pressure sensitive labels, it prints and converts in-pack and on-
pack promotional coupons and labels for booklets and point-of-purchase
displays. Its end markets include food and beverages, personal hygiene,
household products, and beer, wines and spirits.

è migliorata e aumentata esponenzialmente, spiega Weernink.

extensive experience of European machine builders with servo units that
urged Smyth to consider a foreign manufacturer such as Omet, represented in
the USA by Matik North America.
“We saw that Omet had a strong background in the tissue and napkin
machine industry,” he said. “They weren’t necessarily experts in narrow web
machines, but they were well adept in tension control via servos. We got the
feeling they would continue to innovate,” he added.
“They can process non wovens at high speeds,” added Scott Farkas, Director
of New Product Development for Smyth. “They seem to have good tension
control, as they also print on those substrates.”
With its very precise tension control, ensured by the machine mounted servo
units, the Omet Varyfl ex is able to print complex, multi layered booklet labels,
which make up the principle business of Smyth. In older line shaft machines,
tension control was limited to unwinding and rewinding. “Now, with the
servo driven system, we can work with multiple webs and change the thick-
ness of the material along the way, all of which are settings that really make a
difference,” explained Farkas.
Smyth’s Directors had an initial close up preview of the Omet machines at the
2005 Labelexpo in Brussels. Tests were then carried out in the Spring at the
supplier’s demo centre at its facility in Lecco, Italy. The Varyfl ex was delivered
last November and went straight into production at Smyth.
In addition to the GEW UV curing units at each print station, there are two
portable infrared air drying units that can be mounted on any of the print
decks. Among its other main components, the Omet Varyfl ex features a
Vetaphone Corona Plus surface treater, a BST Pro Mark ekr 1000 unwind web
guide and an Erhardt+Leimer Elscan web video control system.
Smyth also planned to add a Martin Automatic butt splicer and turret
rewinder. “This again fi ts in with our aim of becoming a low cost, low waste
producer,” said Weernink.

Inoltre, Smyth ha programmato di aggiungere
un’apparecchiatura per la giunzione Martin
Automatic e un riavvolgitore a torre. “Tutto
questo sempre perché stiamo diventando un
produttore low-cost e stiamo controllando gli
sprechi” dice Weernink.
principali fornitori d’inchiostro, XSYS Print
Solutions e Zeller+Gmelin Corp.
linee. I cliché, di DuPont Cyrel® Packaging
Graphics Products e Anderson & Vreeland,
hanno uno spessore di 0,030 pollici contro i
tradizionali 0,067.
i cliché digitali. Siamo molto orgogliosi di
esserci riusciti”.
quelle normalmente utilizzate negli altri suoi
fpm” dice Farkas. “Il nostro limite è stato in
parte la velocità di asciugatura degli adesivi
deposti”.
Considerando tutto il resto, con il nuovo
sistema Varyfl ex OMET sembra che alla
Smyth, con la stampa gearless ad aziona-
mento servo, si vada avanti a tutto gas.
Omet Varyfl ex at work.
We’ve seen the Varyfl ex print on various
shrink labels to be used on containers. Smyth
has spent around 18 months developing
UV fl exo inks for shrink labels with its pri-
mary ink suppliers, XSYS Print Solutions and
Zeller+Gmelin Corp. It also uses an unusual
digital thin plate technology to achieve a
consistent 175-line screen print quality. The
plates, from DuPont Cyrel® Packaging Graph-
ics Products and Anderson & Vreeland, have
a thickness of 0.030 inches, compared to the
traditional 0.067” plates.
“We took the business from a very large
shrink label producer who was using photo-
gravure,” explained Weernink. “This is some-
thing you couldn’t do with water based inks
or without digital plates. We are very proud
to have pulled it off.”
Smyth has managed to push the Varyfl ex
up to speeds of 450 ft/min, reportedly 50%
faster than speeds achieved with its other
systems, maintaining register and print con-
trol throughout the press. “But, we found its
ideal speed to be around 400 ft/min,” said
Farkas. “We were partly limited by the speed
at which we could dry the adhesives we were
applying,” he added.
All things considered, with its new gearless
servo driven Omet Varyfl ex well into produc-
tion, things are full steam ahead for Smyth.

This capability is owed fi rst to the sheer fl ex-
ibility of the Varyfl ex: the innovative combina-
tion of advanced inline functions that give the
printer a ‘single pass’ solution from the blank
roll right through to the fi nished product, at
high speed and with maximum print quality.
Second, the Omet Varyfl ex stood out for its
versatility in terms of new product devel-
opment: fl exo printing with UV, water and
solvent based inks with appropriate drying
systems; screen print units; rotogravure print
units; hot foil (also available with a foil saver)
and in-line application of holograms; cold foil;
reverse side and ink jet printing; infi nite varia-
tion of print repeat lengths; post print condi-
tioner; inline end of cycle device with waste
removal; on-the-fl y cutting units, allowing
various sheet output formats with the same
cutting cylinder coupled with simple electronic
format setting; display system for automatic
task registering.
Finally, the deciding factor that won it for the
Varyfl ex was its capacity to offer the manufac-
turer the ability to prevent brand counterfeit-
ing with the inline insertion of specifi c units
that make each packet unique and impossible

Il segreto, in casa OMET, è assoluto. Solo

INNOVATION FROM THE FUTURE
Flexo printing today, if carried out on
machines with suitable technologies
and accessories, is comparable to
offset printing in terms of quality. Omet
now intends to demonstrate the enormous
steps taken in fl exo printing with its X-Flex
technology.” So, what are the features of the
Omet X-Flex? “First of all, it is a machine that
ensures perfect register quality every time. It
also quick to make ready, including chang-
ing the colours and anilox rollers. And all of
these changes can be made by the operator
away from the machine, thus guaranteeing
effi ciency, speed and safety. Finally, the X-Flex
offers automatic cylinder position control
before print start up, register control, and a
minimum of production waste.”
Is it then the most advanced printing tech-
nology for producing high-tech material?
“Undoubtedly! The Omet X-Flex can be used
for simultaneous inline fl exo, screen, and
rotogravure printing, cold foil, hot foil, the
application of holograms, reverse side print-
ing and even more.
All of which it does automatically, and with
perfect register control.”
E tutti i cambiamenti pos-
sono essere approntati dall’operatore fuori
macchina, garantendo così effi cienza, rapidità
e sicurezza.
mente limitato”. La più avanzata tecnologia
di stampa, dunque, per la realizzazione di
soggetti ad alto contenuto tecnologico. “Con
X-FLEX si può effettuare contemporaneamente
la stampa fl exo, serigrafi a, rotocalco, cold-foil,
hot-foil, applicazione di ologrammi, stampa
reverse e altro ancora. Sempre con la mas-
sima automatizzazione e un registro di stampa
perfetto”.

their businesses. An excellent example of
this is Cattaneo Paolo, who owns a printing
company in Oggiono, in the heart of Brianza,
a few kilometres outside Milan.
A well established company with fi ne
future prospects.
The company was founded in 1920 by the

carta adesive. Negli anni Settanta la società
costituì una divisione per moduli in continuo,
passando a macchine a nastro Drent offset.
offset Drent Gazelle a bobina. “Non è stato un
salto enorme passare dai moduli in continuo
alla fl essografi a in-line” afferma Cattaneo.
“È vero, abbiamo avuto dei problemi all’ini-
wet glue paper labels. In the 1970s, the com-
pany set up a continuous forms division con-
verting on Drent web offset presses. With the
declining profi tability of the forms market and
reduced margins in the commercial sheet fed
business, Paolo Cattaneo made the decision
to move into roll labels, driven by demand
from his existing customers – particularly
those buying cartons and sheeted labels. After
visiting a trade show, Mr Cattaneo decided
to invest in an Omet Flexy-S fl exo press. It
turned out to be the fi rst Flexy-S machine that
Omet installed. Most offset printers moving
into fl exo need to climb a steep cultural
learning curve when moving from sheet to
inline converting, but Paolo Cattaneo had an
advantage here, as his press operators were
used to processing continuous forms on their
Drent Gazelle roll offset presses. “It was not
a big jump from continuous forms to inline
fl exo,” said Cattaneo. “Admittedly, we did
have some problems in the beginning, but
thanks to great support from Omet, we over-
came them. For example, in fl exo there can be
variations in how the plate is mounted and in
the thickness of the plate which you do not
fi nd in offset, where the plate is standard and
is locked into place,” he added.

famiglia. Commentando la qualità UV fl exo
rispetto alla offset, Marco afferma: “La qualità
è veramente molto vicina a quella offset ed
alcuni clienti si sono complimentati con noi
per il nostro lavoro fl essografi co. I colori fl exo
pari a 54-60 l/cm.
garantita dai servomotori sui cilindri portacli-

The third entrepreneurial generation
The fl exo labels operation has been set up
as a separate division, called EtiCont, which
is run by the third generation of the family,
Marco Cattaneo. Comparing UV fl exo to
offset, Marco says: “The quality is really very
close to offset and customers have compli-
mented us on our fl exo work. Flexo colours
are much brighter and we can offer more
of them, which allows designers to be more
creative.”
A key factor in the company’s high quality
fl exo work is the use of digital fl exo plates,
produced on Esko fCTP equipment at an out-
side platemaking house. Generally, printing is
carried out at 54-60 l/cm.
The 330mm (13in) Omet Flexy-S press is con-
fi gured with a corona treater, eight UV fl exo
servo driven print stations and a cold foil unit,
with die cutting on magnetic cylinders. The
press also incorporates automatic longitudinal
and lateral registration control.
EtiCont’s Flexy-S incorporates chill drums for
printing on heat sensitive fi lms and thermal
papers. Maintaining registration on extensi-
ble substrates is greatly assisted by the servo
motors on the plate and impression cylinders,
which allow fi ne control of the web between
print units.
A registration mark is printed on the fi rst print
station, which is read by sensors at the subse-
quent print stations. This information is used
to adjust servo rotation speed to compen-
sate for changes in web length. Infeed and
outfeed tension is also servo controlled. The
fl exo line is completed by a Prati rewinder.
The complex fl exo and offset operations at
Oggiono are controlled and coordinated by
a dedicated MIS system which the company
developed jointly with software experts Coco-
nut Bay.

sare eventuali variazioni nella lunghezza del
nastro.

sensibili a pressione incluso PP metallizzato.
stampa offset” fa notare Marco Cattaneo.
Food & Beverages - the main market
The main market sectors served by EtiCont
are food and drinks, which demand a wide
range of pressure sensitive laminates includ-
ing metallised PPs. “We were surprised
how wide the range of substrates was that
we could print fl exo when compared with
offset,” noted Marco Cattaneo.
A key PS growth market is wine labels, as
more Italian vineyards install automatic label
applicators and embrace the design pos-
sibilities opened up by PS labels. Here, Paolo
Cattaneo identifi es a limitation for fl exo, as
it cannot print effectively on the range of
‘antique’ offset papers traditionally used for
wine labels.
Another area where Cattaneo sees growth
potential is for short runs of corrugated
boxes. “The market for fl exo printing of cor-
rugated boxes is growing, but the technol-
ogy is not changing to allow for printing of
shorter runs. Today we see a move to stand-
ardise box sizes and differentiate through the
use of labels,” he added.
There is no question that Cattaneo’s foray
into fl exo labels has been a success, and the
company is looking at purchasing a second
Flexy-S machine.

stri, cilindri anilox, ecc.).
Per questo il Graphic Arts Centre di Asahi

strong belief in mutual cooperation. Their
combined aim was to create a synergy where
complementary technology would be the key
element leading to progress and standardisa-
tion for fl exographic printing techniques.
The story of this cooperation started at Lecco,
Italy, headquarters of Omet, where techni-
cians from both companies met to discuss
the project, and immediately felt on the same
wavelength with each other. The main idea
was to create a strong partnership where
Asahi Photoproducts would supply its exper-
tise in pre-press management and printing
form manufacturing on the one side, and on
the other, Omet would supply its expertise of
high quality printing.
The goal was to establish a standard working
procedure that defi ned all parameters that
would infl uence the print results (eg printing

validate those procedures.

superiore allo standard. Il gruppo può lavorare
un’ampia gamma di materiali dalla carta 60
g/m2 fi no al cartoncino spessore 600 micron
senza incidere negativamente sulle prestazioni
produttive della linea da stampa.
With regard to the quality of the product, the
‘on-the-fl y’ cutting unit provides clean, dust
free, slanted cuts.
Short cutting formats showed no signs of tear-
ing, while there were no blockages reported
with longer formats; the cut is perfectly square
with all sheet lengths.
The machine, which offers sheet size regula-
tion without the need to change format setup,
also reduces production time: the cutting
phase, synchronised with the speed of the
material, in fact lasts around 30/40 minutes
degrees and allows the cylinders to acceler-
ate or decelerate in order to resurface during
the cutting phase for any format setting.
The different running speeds, depending on
the various format lengths to be produced,
are programmed into the software, which
then synchronises the cylinder speed with
the peripheral speed of the material at the
moment of cutting.
The special shape of the cross blades ensures
a greater durability than offered by standard
shape blades.
The unit can work with a wide variety of mate-
rials, ranging from 60g/m2 paper through to
600 micron cartonboard, without affecting the
productivity of the printing line.

origini risalgono al 1977, quando era cono-
sciuta come Enveloppe Supreme. Attraverso
a Vancouver.
di New York. Oggi Supremex Inc rappresenta
Canada, impiegando circa 750 persone e oltre
200 macchine. Talvolta, però, non è suffi ciente
essere i più grandi. Si ha bisogno di essere i
migliori.
Buste Flexo
USA. Inoltre, ci sono tirature solo in fran-
The company’s origins date back to 1977,
when it was known as Envelope Supreme.
Through a series of acquisitions between
1991 and 2000, the company gradually
expanded into 11 facilities spread across the
country from Moncton to Vancouver. A 12th
factory is located just over the border in Buf-
falo, in the State of New York. Now, Supre-
mex Inc accounts for 75 % of all envelope
production in Canada, employing approxi-
mately 750 people and operating more than
200 machines.
Sometimes, though, it’s not enough to be the
biggest. One also needs to be the best. And
that means meeting all customer demands,
especially for high quality printing. In an effort
to do just that, as well as expand its range of
products, Supremex has invested in high end
multi colour presses, training its staff in how
to produce high defi nition four colour work.
Flexo envelopes
According to Gilles Cyr, President and CEO of
Supremex, approximately 70 % of the com-
pany’s envelopes are printed fl exo. “Most of
what we do is fl exo,” he said. “About 10% of
our sales are done on ink jet machines, which
are a type of offset printing. Another 20% is

cese, altre solo in inglese e altre ancora in
bilingua. Di tutta la stampa fl essografi ca
della Supremex, soltanto una piccola parte
viene fatta CMYK.
a registro,”afferma Cyr.
offset.” Ed è esattamente quello che Supre-
mex faceva per questi clienti fi no a poco fà.
“Subappaltavamo il lavoro ad uno stampatore
offset affi nché questo ci fornisse materiale
stampato in fogli e poi lo fustellavamo noi,”
dice Cyr. “Ma gli sprechi erano enormi, i costi
molto alti e ci voleva più tempo”. Nell’aprile
2006, la società ha acquistato una macchina
OMET ad otto colori multi-supporto. Ora in
veniva dato all’esterno. “Le altre macchine CI
non hanno essiccatori e quindi non possiamo
usarle per carta rivestita,” dice Cyr. “Ma la
nuova macchina può stampare su qualsiasi
plain stock that is sold to paper merchants,”
he added. Mr Cyr prefers fl exo printing
for reasons tied closely to the nature of the
Canadian envelope industry. “Flexo offers us
fl exibility of repeats. And since we are in a
smaller market, repeats are important,” he
explained.
Alain Tremblay, Operations Manager at
Supremex in LaSalle supported this statement,
saying: “Our runs tend to be a bit smaller
than in the USA.” Typical run size in Canada
ranges from 150,000 to 500,000 envelopes.
Although run lengths can extend to 20 mil-
lion units, this is the exception. If you exclude
the banks and government, run lengths are
much smaller than those in the USA. In addi-
tion, some runs are just in French, others are
just in English, and some are bi-lingual. Of all
the fl exo printing Supremex does, only a small
portion is done CMYK.
Until recently, Supremex used two traditional
CI style fl exo presses, one in Toronto and the
other in Montréal. Toronto is also equipped
with three additional CI units. “Producing
the traditional way is a long process, because
the job starts on a roll and is then sheeted,
printed, and die cut, so when it’s fi nally
folded, it is not fully registered,” stated Mr
Cyr. “If a customer wants a direct mail piece,
it has to be printed high quality or else the
customer will source it from another printer
that is probably running offset.”
In fact, until recently, that’s exactly what
Supremex was doing for some of its clients.
“We would subcontract an offset printer to
deliver printed material in sheets and we
would then die cut it,” said Mr Cyr. “But that
produced a lot of waste, incurred a lot of
cost and took more time,” he added. In April
2006, the company bought an eight colour,
multi substrate press from Omet. Now Supre-
mex is working to move all the once out-
sourced offset work to the Omet. “The other
CI presses do not have dryers, which means
we can’t run coated paper on them,” said Mr
Cyr. “But the new press can print on any kind
of coated paper, and then we just fold and
glue on other machines.”

in crescita,” dice Cyr. “Inoltre, ci vengono
chieste più caratteristiche sulla busta stessa.
Molti dei nostri clienti direct-mail chiedono
etichette autoadesive da mettere sulla busta o
a volte anche all’interno.”
a sei colori.
in Canada, soprattutto a Montréal.
More than mail
Beyond boosting the quality of its envelope
printing, Supremex had a second goal in
mind when purchasing the new press. “The
envelope market is a good market, but not
a growth one,” said Mr Cyr. “In addition, we
are being asked for more features on the
envelope itself. A lot of our direct mail cus-
tomers are asking for self adhesive labels to
go on the face of the envelope or sometimes
inside it.”
This prompted Supremex to invest in two
more presses – an eight colour and a six
colour narrow web machine.
Commenting on the Omet press Mr Cyr
said: “One of the techniques of envelope
manufacturing is in the cutting and gluing of
products.” That lends itself to folding carton
production.
“Our intent was to bring our knowledge of
manufacturing and apply it to boxes in one or
two operations max,” he said.
Cyr pointed to the growth of the pharma-
ceutical and cosmetics industries in Canada,
especially in Montréal. And with the new
Omet, he can produce quality cartons in half
the time.
“The Omet machine can go from the roll to
the die cut blank in one operation, and then
we can send it to a folder,” he concluded.

E in
I tradizionali sistemi di controllo registro at-
colore dopo colore, a macchina in movimento.
mantiene automaticamente quanto impo-
stato. Inoltre la “sensazione di registro”, è
Omet continues to fl y the fl ag for print revolu-
tion, and is once again making the headlines.
This time it is for the development an innova-
tive system that allows top quality production
combined with the elimination of material
waste during start up.
The new design, known as ‘VISION-2’, pro-
vides visual format control through a high
performance, ultra fl exible system of compact
multi cameras installed on each print unit, ena-
bling the user to keep tight control over the
machine while ensuring high quality standards.
Traditional register control systems currently
on the market are fi tted with a single video
camera located at the end of the machine,
which captures the printed image seconds
after it is completed and therefore lags a few
web metres behind. Based on this single
image, the operator has to carry out a number
of manual register adjustments, colour after
colour, with the machine in motion. This
naturally causes material waste, which leads to
increased print costs.
In fact, only once this manual correction has
been made can the system settings be auto-
matically maintained, by means of photocells
located on each print unit. ‘Register recogni-
tion’ is also entrusted to the operator, and is
therefore susceptible to error.
Now, however, the new Omet ‘VISION-2’

multi camera system is capable of captur-
ing ultra high speed images (almost in real
time) for each print unit, with the possibility
of combining different resolutions, in colour
and/or monochrome. The visual system control
software is able to import a master image and
instantaneously compare it with that taken by
the individual TV camera located on each print
unit. This produces an electronic signal which,
by acting on the individual motors, allows both
the transversal and longitudinal register to be
corrected immediately.
This new process virtually eliminates material
waste, since each printed image is recorded
immediately and automatically, regardless of
operator speed or capability. Moreover, the
repetitive system guarantees the same quality
and precision of print with each work cycle.
And, the system does not require specifi c data
to be entered for each, nor do the plates need
to be mounted at a certain point on the sleeve.
It is also benefi cial during roll changes and
restarts, and reduces workload for the opera-
tor, who is left free to perform other tasks.

camente elaborato, agendo sui singoli motori,
ne consente l’immediata correzione di registro
trasversale e longitudinale.
“a registro” indipendentemente dall’abilità o
lavoro.

and transportation of water from one place
to another”. And it was almost certainly the
latter suggestion that took him to Lecco to
study the feasibility of making the waters of
the Adda navigable. But there was another
reason that took Leonardo to Lecco: the need

Lecchese: l’incarico di scoprire miniere di ferro
dopo che i veneziani ne avevano proibito
l’estrazione dalle montagne bergamasche e
to, presso a una terra detta Pra Sacto Petro
e vene di fero e cose fantastiche”. E nota
altrove:“nascevi assai mappello ecci gran ruine
e cadute d’acque”.
sto e Monza, avesse a scoprire quel panorama
formato dalle inconfondibili dentellate cime
San Martino.
to discover a source of iron after the Venetians
prohibited extractions from the mountains
around Bergamo and Brescia thus depriving
supplies from the people from Milan. Leonardo
reached Valsassina and we can trace this in his
writings: “furthermore there are copper and
silver veins in a land called Pra Sacto Petro and
iron veins and other fantastic things”. And he
noted somewhere else: “you awake close to
big ruins and water falls”. The historian Luigi
Giuseppe Conato, who has devoted his life to
researching Leonardo, supposes that Leon-
ardo da Vinci, arriving from Sesto and Monza,
discovered the landscape formed by the
unmistakable serrated peaks of Mount Reseg-
one close by the cuneiform Grigne massifs.
Leonardo stopped “a Santa Maria a O nella
valle di Ronvagnan ne’ monti di Brigantia”
(at Santa Maria Hoè, in the Rovagnate valley,
in the Brianza mountains) and climbs up San
Genesio hill: a drawing of his, represents the
profi le of the southern Grigna, as it can still be
observed from San Genesio. He also traced the
profi le of Mount Barro with Mount Resegone
at the back, with Mount Due Mani at the side.
When Leonardo arrived in Lecco, he stopped
on the Bridge Azzone Visconti. This is evident
in a drawing in which the profi le of Mount
Moregallo can be seen on the left, the waves of
the lake below, and the jutting out San Martino
rocky barrier on the right. This is also proven by
the Annunciation at the Uffi zi Gallery, where
one can catch sight of a mountain in the back-
ground that is identical to San Martino with its
peaks as seen from the Lecco quarter of Santo
Stefano. Also, in the Virgin and St Anne at the
Louvre Museum, one is struck by the great simi-
larity of the rock face on the right to the shape
of the Medale Horn, as well as the one between
the rocks on the left with water washing them,
and the beginning of the eastern bank of the

NO-STOP:

One of the most important and delicate opera-
tions in napkin printing machines is changing
rolls. In fact, the effi ciency of the machine itself
depends on the ability to limit waste as much as
possible. To tackle the very heart of the problem,
Omet has patented a special continuous unwinder
that eliminates machine stops. This reduces waste
caused by slowing down the machine to change
the roll manually and then ramping back up to
production speed. Omet expects to launch the
new unit soon, and provide information about its

SUPPORT FUNCTION IS UNIQUE
Our aim is the timely solving of technical problems experienced by Omet cus-
tomers anywhere in the world, and taking the appropriate steps for immedi-
ate action directly on site or by quickly despatching spare parts and upgrade
units.
Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team is effectively a ‘fi rst-aid’ device that
is at the disposal of customers every day (including Saturday). Particularly
tricky but important is the job that the staff of this Offi ce, coordinated by Ing.
Francesco Moro, Alessandro Nava, Massimo Fantato and Sabrina Medolago,
has to carry out. In the markets where Omet operates, the watchword is
‘just in time’. Being able to give rapid, precise and timely answers very often
means less machine downtime for a customer and the opportunity to win or
see through a precious job order.
Even for Omet, which has invested in people and technology, it is obvious that
this offi ce has a strategic function. Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team
avails itself of the most modern remote diagnosis and intervention technolo-
gies. In addition, Omet’s team of 25 technicians, specialising in mechanics
and electronics, relies on the offi ce to deploy them to a customer’s site in any
of the 50 countries worldwide where Omet machines are installed.
Fundamental to the smooth working of such a service is a blend of people
and technology. Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team is made up of
expert engineers who know the detailed specifi cation of all manufactured
and installed machines, and consequently can resolve any query or technical
problem that the customer may encounter.
“The main function of our Technical Customer Service Team,” explained
Omet’s Sales Manager, Marco Calcagni, “is acting as an everyday interface
between Omet and the customer, and being a precise and ready reference
to solve his problems. The rapport that is frequently established between our
technicians and the customer’s production staff is very practical, based on
mutual confi dence and professional regard. Omet’s Technical Customer Serv-
ice Team is often the fi rst contact that the customer has with our Company
after buying a machine. And the customer knows he can count on valuable
support, specially tailored to him.”
The technology employed for remote intervention is particularly sophisti-
cated: “Through special information technology interfaces,” explained Ing
Francesco Moro, “we are able to intervene ‘online’ directly into the machine’s
programme, wherever it is, and carry out an exhaustive inquiry, isolating
the problem and solving it. When it’s needed, we are also able to deal with
the request to despatch a particular spare part ‘same day’, for example as a
replacement for a worn out part, or to plan a technician’s travel.”
But, the planning of new installations and the negotiation with the customer
of supplementary equipment – if any – to be provided for existing machinery
is also the responsibility of Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team. Moreo-

investito in uomini e tecnologie. All’Uffi cio di assistenza tecnica OMET, infatti,
particolari interfacce informatiche - spiega l’ing. Francesco Moro - siamo in gra-
do di intervenire ‘on line’ direttamente sul programma dell’impianto, ovunque

ver, this offi ce liaises with and offers technical support to Omet’s Sales Team
by recommending a list of spare parts for each customer to keep in the ware-
house at his factory.
The requests for help made to Omet’s Technical Customer Service Team differ.
They generally relate more to the machine type, and less to the company size.
“In the case of label, fi lm and cartonboard machines,” explained Alessandro
Nava, “the requests are often quite complex and aimed at getting the best
print quality from the machine. In these cases we need to have expertise in
inks, substrates, glues and adhesives. In the case of napkin machines, how-
ever, most customers are large groups or multinationals. In such cases, the
dialogue is with the company’s engineers and concerns problems relating to
embossing, folding, the different napkin typology or problems connected with
productivity so that each machine stoppage is minimised.”
From such detailed dialogue with the customer base, Omet’s Technical Cus-
tomer Service Team has, over the years, been able to recommend individual
solutions and develop specifi c machines, units or accessories. “Listening to
the customer is what our Technical Customer Service Team does every day
of the week,” concluded Marco Calcagni, “and by listening we get to know
about specifi c enquires that need to be followed by the Company.”

Ehrardt&Leimer100% Print Inspection on the Printing PressChances and LimitsWeb viewing systems are standard today on almost
all printing presses. They also play an important role
during make-ready for sporadic controls of critical parts.
100% print inspection systems based on line cameras
have become widely used in parallel to the web viewing
systems based on area cameras.
WHAT IS MEANT BY 100% PRINT INSPECTION?
Quite frequently 100% print inspection is thought to
mean that 100% of all defects will be detected. Naturally
this is not the point as a control system can only detect
defects of a certain physically specifi ed size. 100%
print inspection simply means that the print web is
being inspected continuously over the entire width and
at a specifi ed sensitivity. The sensitivity itself depends
substantially on the camera resolution.
WHAT TYPES OF CAMERAS ARE AVAILABLE TODAY?
Camera technology has seen an astonishing
development recently. Not so long ago the highest
possible resolution was 2000 pixels. Today, monochrome
line cameras are available with over 8000 pixels, color
line cameras have a resolution of 2000 pixels, the 3-
chip technology has considerably increased their line
frequency and image quality. In addition, their industrial
suitability has been signifi cantly broadened by the novel
interface technologies now available.
POSSIBLE DEFECT SIZES
The minimum defect size which can possibly be
detected depends on the camera resolution and on the
web itself. In order to reliably detect a one pixel defect
within a text fi eld the neighboring pixels must also be
considered. Figure 1 shows the resolution of a letter
with 6000 pixels and with 2000 pixels. If, for example,
the horizontal line in the letter “e” had been dropped for
some reason or other making the “e” resemble a “c”, ”, it
becomes quite obvious that a control system operating
with 2000 pixels would probably not catch the defect.
By Dr. Stephan Krebs
Figure 1: l.h. fi gure: enlargement at 6000 pixels, r.h.: enlargement at 2000 pixels
NEW WORKFLOW CONCEPTS DUE TO 100% PRINT IMAGE INSPECTION
Whereas in the past the actual defect image was just shown, it is possible today to document uninterruptedly
the entire inspection process and to make this inspection protocol continuously available to the printer during
production as a so-called “Roll Map”. The operator is thus in a position to identify heavy, repetitive defects and to
make a well-considered decision as to whether the machine should be stopped or not.
Figure 2 shows a “Roll Map“. Areas will be defi ned across the web in which defects will be displayed with a
rectangular symbol. By clicking on the rectangle the defect image for which the rectangle stands will be displayed
to the right for further analysis.
Figure 2: Part of a “Roll Map“ showing a selected defect image at the right
Defects can fi rst be analyzed on the “Roll Map“ and decisions can be taken before fi nishing as to whether a
detected defect is of any relevance or not. The „Roll Map“ will be edited accordingly and the re-winder will be
programmed to stop only at those relevant positions.
This so-called „Scheduling“ quite obviously leads to increased productivity compared to the fi nishing process
which uses print image control on the re-winder. With the later processing procedure the re-winder is stopped at
every detected defect and the operator is called upon to make a decision before fi nishing continues. If irrelevant
defects occur more or less frequently, these stops will either reduce the productivity or the operator will have to
reduce the sensitivity of the print image control system. This decision, however, considerably infl uences the quality

for countless ‘custom made’ solutions
It’s not just a simple machine, even though it can be customised in certain
ways. It is much more: a real modular platform, which is a perfect fi t for the
most varied needs of any customer base, with an almost infi nite number of
confi gurations.
This is the strength of Omet’s TV 503 Line, the most versatile and fl exible solu-
tion available on today’s market for fulfi llment of specifi c customer needs and
the production of the widest range of napkins.
Thanks to its completely fl exible confi guration, the TV 503 Line allows Omet
to design and offer a ‘custom made’ solution for each customer according to
the type of the product to be manufactured. This is based on careful analysis
of all the variables, including the material to be used (1- or more-ply tissue,
paper, non woven materials, dry laid, etc), the format dimensions, the type of
fold, the embossing features, and the printing units (up to four).
A ‘custom made’ machine
It is the machine’s complete versatility and total customisation
possibility that allow it to make an unlimited range of napkins
and other disposable products.
The main components of the machine make all the difference.

A cominciare dai
gruppi stampa. OMET TV 503 può infatti montare fi no a 4 gruppi stampa, così
rappresentato dai gruppi piega.
acciaio/acciaio o acciaio/acciaio gommato. Si possono così ottenere: goffratura
in continuo, goffratura punta/liscio, goffratura a riquadro. Nel caso di tissue

Another element that allows the machine to be customised is the folding
section. The Omet TV 503’s folding unit has mechanical gripping, which can
be confi gured to suit the fold required by the customer and the product to
be made. It is possible to make napkins with ¼ fold, napkins with 1/8 fold,
dispenser napkins and catering napkins.
Embossing, in addition to colour and folding, is one of the essential features
in the manufacture of napkins and other disposable products. Thanks to
Omet’s R&D department, the TV 503 can be equipped with extremely reliable
embossing units that offer the widest range of solutions, while maintaining
excellent quality. The range of possible solutions includes steel/woolpaper,
steel/steel or steel/rubber steel.
So it is possible to obtain: continuous embossing, embossing point, square
embossing. Working with 2- and 3-ply tissue it is possible to obtain lami-
nated solutions that include point to point micro embossing, decorated micro

marchio proprio - “Fantasy”, “Vet”, “De-
corè”, “Bimbo Mio” e “Protege” –, che si
affi ancano a quelle “private labels” realizzate
per grosse catene e nella grande distribuzio-
ne.
carta igienica liscia e microgoffrata, bianca o
colori; fazzoletti a 3 o 4 veli; tovaglioli a 1, 2
e 3 veli bianchi e colorati. E, ancora, pannolini
unisex per bambino, salviettine umidifi cate e
assorbenti igienici.
prodotti a 5 veli perfettamente legati”.
This strategically chosen position has allowed
Futura Line to constantly evolve itself over the
past twenty years and follow a path of invest-
ment in production technology and product
innovation.
This is how the company was able to develop
such well known and respected brands as
‘Fantasy’, ‘Vet’, ‘Decorè’, ‘Bimbo Mio’ and
‘Protégé, as well as the ‘private labels’ for
big chains with large distribution require-
ments. All along, Futura Line has been able to
develop an almost infi nite range of cellulose
products for household use and personal
care, including : plain and micro embossed
toilet paper – white or printed in one/two
colours; with glued on decoration; with white
or coloured decoration on 2-,3-,4-and 5-plies;
2-,3-,and 4-ply wipes with glued on decora-
tion; and point to point, in innumerable col-
ours; 3- or 4-ply handkerchiefs; 1-,2-and 3-ply
white and coloured napkins. In addition, the
company manufactures unisex baby diapers,
wet wipes and sanitary towels.
“Our product range is very large and diversi-
fi ed and this allows us to set out our stall
as a unique supplier to any size of customer
needing a complete portfolio of products,”
explained Antonio Pauciullo, one of the
shareholding partners of Futura Line. “We
made a conscious decision to pursue quality,
as can be seen by the fact that that we are
the only company in Europe to manufacture
perfectly tied 5-ply products.”

sifi carsi: “Il nostro mercato, soprattutto in
Italia – continua – è fortemente competitivo
e con poche grandi realtà a contenderselo.
Puntare sulla qualità e sulla presenza all’estero
ha signifi cato poter approcciare mercati più
evoluti, dove la qualità e l’innovazione viene
premiata”.
verso i quali è in grado di trasformare fi no a
45mila tonnellate annue di cellulosa.
Prodotti esclusivi, dunque, e di grande qualità,
con una elevatissima capacità di personalizza-
zione.

Futura Line has now decided to diversify.
“Our market, especially in Italy, is very tough
with just a few large suppliers competing
for business,” he said, adding: “By focusing
on the quality end of the market and being
active abroad we have been able to attack
the more developed markets, where quality
and innovation are rewarded”.
Exports now account for more than 30% of
Futura Line’s output, which is produced from
three factories totalling 30,000 sqm, situated
on 62,000 sqm of land. Current production
capacity is up to 45,000 tons of cellulose a
year.
These facilities provide Futura Line with the
capability of producing exclusive, quality
products, with the potential to customise to a
very high degree. These products are manu-
factured using processes that incorporate
both the strictest of checks on raw materials
and an in-house laboratory that is equipped
with the most modern technology available in
today’s tissue market. These facilities are fully
compliant with the latest international quality
standards, such as UNI EN ISO 9001:2000
Certifi cation for Quality Management and
14001:1996 for Environmental Management.

il direttore della produzione di Futura Line,
Michele Tuzi – abbiamo sempre riconosciuto

the realisation of the third purpose built and

This is precisely where Futura Line’s coopera-

It is a partnership that dates back almost
twenty years. “In Omet,” states Michele Tuzi,
Production Manager at Futura Line, “we have
always found a willing partner, and one that
is able to recommend quality technologi-

honestly say that Omet has few competitors.
Its machines offer performance, reliability and
a balance of quality and price that places it
into a very short list of international partners

It is no coincidence that, after buying an
Omet TV840 in 2000, Futura Line has recently
installed a 2-colour TV841 and has also
ordered a 4-colour TV841, which is due for
installation in the next few months.
“We are really pleased with the new Omet
line, which we are running tests on right
now,” concluded Mr Tuzi.
“We are planning to use it for our 2- and 3-

abroad. For that reason alone, we are
delighted that Omet’s after sales support is so

ALPINISTICHE DI MARCO CONFORTOLA,

OTTOMILA.
laiano Marco Confortola (www.marcocon-
fortola.it). Marco, che è un personaggio con
un carattere aperto ed estroverso, a partire
dal 2004 ha indirizzato tutta la sua attività
alpinistica verso il concatenamento degli
estremo.
In quella serata
tando Marco. È stata una serata indimentica-

rapporto di sponsorizzazione con Marco, per
aiutarlo a raggiungere i suoi obiettivi. Que-

Starting this year, Omet has agreed to spon-
sor the activities of Himalayan mountain
climber Marco Confortola (www.marcocon-
fortola.it). Since 2004, Marco, an open and
extrovert character, has focused all his atten-
tion on scaling the ‘eight-thousanders’: 14 of
the world’s highest peaks, all rising to over
8,000 metres.
And to add spice to his new venture, Marco
(who has worked as a professional mountain
guide in Valfurvaq since 1990) has decided
to combine his mountain conquests with his
other passion - extreme skiing.
In fact Marco, who claims descents of ‘impos-
sible’ drops such as the north faces of the
Tresero and the Ortler, has already skied
down the Shisha Pangma, the second of his
8,000 metre summits, and intends to descend
all the other peaks of the Himalayas and the
Karakorum in the same fashion, wherever
possible.
Marco met up with Omet at its 2006 Christ-
mas party. That evening, Mr. Angelo Bartes-
aghi, founder of the Omet Group, wanted to
bring a touch of adrenalin to an event that
was attended by more than 300 employees,
so he decided to invite Marco.
It was an unforgettable night, which resulted

OMET? Molti, stando a quello che lui afferma,
a cominciare dalla passione per le conquiste
più impegnative: “Come alpinista – afferma
- ho scelto di misurarmi sempre con obiettivi
estremamente ambiziosi. Non mi sono mai
accontentato di fare cose semplici, ma ho
sempre avuto la voglia di vedere fi no a dove
potevo spingermi, operando però sempre
entro i confi ni del ragionevole. Inoltre,
In OMET ho trovato queste stesse
prossime conquiste!
The sponsorship deal started from the fi rst
expedition of 2007, which saw Marco climb
the 6th highest mountain on Earth, the Cho
Oyu.
But what does Marco have in common with
a company like Omet? The similarities are
many, as Marco himself affi rms, starting with
a passion for the most demanding achieve-
ments: “As a mountaineer”, said Marco, “I
have always tried to set my sights very high.
I have never been satisfi ed with anything
simple; I have always wanted to see how far I
could push myself, but always within reason.
And when you’re climbing an 8,000m peak,
you can’t do anything on your own: even
if the whole group doesn’t get to the top,
scaling a challenging mountain such as Ever-
est or Annapurna requires incredible team-
work. I see the very same qualities in Omet:
the passion to take on the most demand-
ing tasks, seeking the best out of everyone
while following the rules, and a very strong
team spirit. And I have to say that building
a respectful and friendly relationship with
OMET has been easy, since I am very passion-
ate about anything to do with mechanics,
and I am certainly fascinated by the ‘beauty’
of Its machines.”
We wish Marco every success in his forthcom-
ing challenges!

ALGERIALa perla d’FLEXOPRINTFLEXOPRINT
business legato all’industria dei soft drinks,
The promise that the new millennium held
for political stability in Algeria, and a time
when the economy moved ahead in the wake
of strong demographics was, according to
Abdallah Hamdane ‘a veritable hole-in-one’
for his new Al-Djazair based company Flexo-
print.
Early days in printing and packaging.
The company’s fi rst foray into printing and
packaging had come 20 years earlier, when
Mr Hamdane ventured into wide web printing
with fl exo and rotogravure machines for fl ex-
ible packaging in the food industry.
This experience was to prove decisive in set-
ting up the new company, now run by son
Faycal, who is responsible for production and
logistics.
A recent tour of the factory showed the origi-
nal small fl exo machine still in use, printing
packaging for the dairy industry, and produc-
ing paper cut-and-stack labels.
This involves the printing, sheet cutting and
die cutting of various types of labels, includ-
ing sticky labels for applications such as glass
bottles for water, beer, etc.
2004 – the quality breakthrough.
The real quality breakthrough came in 2004,
when Flexoprint’s biggest clients, including

print col mondo della stampa e dell’imballag-
gio risalgono in effetti a quasi vent’anni or
L’esperienza raccolta in tale settore fu deter-
minante nella decisione di creare una nuova
azienda, oggi guidata sotto l’aspetto produtti-
Furono proprio queste necessità a far entrare
in contatto Flexoprint con OMET. L’azienda
Coca Cola and Pepsi, began to lean towards
new materials. This demanded better quality
standards, and machines that could print on
thin plastic fi lm.
Needing to accommodate these new stand-
ards, Flexoprint turned to Omet.
The Italian manufacturer was known from its
attendance at various trade fairs, but now the
time had come to test its machines’ capabili-
ties fi rst hand.
After carrying out numerous print trials at
Omet’s facilities, Flexoprint fi nally decided on
a Flexy model, specially equipped for running
unsupported fi lm.
Inline corona treatment, motorised cooling
drums and purpose built tension control units
helped clinch the deal.

Chiedia-
mo all’operatore Bouhamed Khirredine cosa
dell’installazione. Questo supporto tecnico è
stato determinante nel raggiungimento della
massima produttività in tempi ridotti.
Nelle vetrine
dei campioni in esposizione, si riconoscono
molti importanti brands di multinazionali.
Abdallah Hamdane spiega che attualmente
hanno implementato una politica di controllo
di qualità molto rigoroso, e ciò permette di
essere fornitori prioritari di queste aziende.
The numerous benefi ts of the Omet
Flexy.
Mr Hamdane proudly shows off his Omet
Flexy line running at maximum speed, pro-
ducing wraparound labels on 38-micron PP
fi lm for one of the leading international brand
owners.
Machine Operator, Bouhamed Khirredine,
had this to say about the Flexy line: “I am very
happy with it and extremely satisfi ed with its
performance and the speed with which I can
change jobs.”
Mr Bouhamed explained the value of servo
drive in maintaining good web tension con-
trol, which is essential for quality printing on
extensible substrates.
He also drew attention to the cooling drums,
which offer tight control over the web tem-
perature, whether working on plastic materi-
als or super-fi ne aluminium foil.
Flexoprint’s owner also stressed the value of
the training given onsite by Omet’s techni-
cians after the installation. “This technical
support has been a deciding factor in achiev-
ing maximum productivity in the minimum
time”.
A future of growth.
Whether working with unsupported fi lm or
aluminium foil, Flexoprint now has all the
necessary tools for manufacturing to the
highest standards of quality.
Testimony to this is the display cabinets con-
taining packaging products for some of the
largest multinational brands.
Mr Hamdane explained that his company
had implemented a very strict quality control
policy, which had put it among the priority
suppliers for such companies.
Market studies forecast a 7% growth in
demand for soft drinks in 2007 (over 2006),
and 15% for fruit juices.
