OM SAM OM
The Concentrated Essence
of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra
by Dale Goodyear 2012
In previous essays I have taught a powerful mantra to the great Bodhisattva,Samantabhadra, who expresses (and bestows) the Freedom and Joy of the Buddhas. That potent mantra is Om Samantabhadra Om. It has numerous applications for self-transformation, and I highly recommend it.
I now wish to teach a short mantra that contains the concentrate of Samantabhadra'sbeing. We can use it whenever we need a mantra we can recite simply and quickly, inthe press of our daily activities and responsibilities.
The mantra is Om Sam Om (i.e., ॐ सं ॐ सं ॐ सं ॐ सं ॐॐॐॐ or OOOOṃṃṃṃ Sa Sa Sa Saṃṃṃṃ O O O Oṃṃṃṃ ). It uses the first syllable of Samantabhadra's name, Sa or सससस, nasalized as a seed-syllable, SaSaSaSaṃṃṃṃ or संससंंसं, and that first syllable is the seed that contains all of Samantabhadra's enlightened and liberated Power.
The syllable SaSaSaSaṃṃṃṃ can also be called the concentrated drop of his Saving Power.
It's the Saving Power of Freedom, Joy, Giving and Letting Go. In written Chinese they
also tuned into this: the Chinese syllable Sa 撒撒撒撒 means "release, let go," and the nasalized
syllable Song 鬆鬆鬆鬆 means "loose, set free."
Samantabhadra is the Bodhisattva of the Cloud of Vast Offerings. He offers all he has,all he is, to the Buddhas for the saving of sentient beings. The more we let go (of ourselfish ego, of our limiting attachments, etc.), the more free (i.e., ultimately Free, orLiberated) we become.
The two OM's are the expression of Community, Communion and Connection betweenindividuals. Samantabhadra is the Bodhisattva of Community, of the Sangha. So theOM in my heart chakra arcs to the OM in yours, and so on and on, until all beings ofGood Will are interconnected--and everyone's Good is multiplied by everyone else'sGood. (Samantabhadra's name means "All Good" or "All-embracing Good.")
If you want to try this short mantra, I recommend you give it 108 or 110 times. Tentimes on each finger of your hand equals 110--an easy way to count. Or when you havea mala or prayer beads in hand, you can use those, too. But the easier and morepractical and flexible you make it, the better.
Actually, if you have twenty minutes or so to spare, give this mantra OM SAM OM athousand times. While you do it, open up your heart and soul to Samantabhadra and seehow it feels. (After you finish the mantras, just stay quiet and silent for a minute andfeel the response from Samantabhadra.)
Buddhists often will give a mantra 10,000 or 100,000 times to fully internalize andempower it. A short mantra like Om Sam Om falls easily off the tongue and goes quickly. In ten days you can have the 10,000 repetitions! And as long as you give even a little ofyour mind and heart to the mantra and to Samantabhadra, he will return to you a greatdeal of his Help.
So I highly recommend this quick, concentrated mantra to Samantabhadra, who hasvowed to set you Free if you will let him.
