SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY
C.KARUN KUMARSwarnandhra Engineering College
INTRODUCTION
• Solar energy is most efficient , harmless and renewable energy source
• Solar energy is very economical• Solar energy is available everywhere
• Involves high initial costs
• Unavailability at all times
BACKDROPS OF SOLAR ENERGY
• CSP stands for Concentrated Solar Power• Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is a
process of concentrating heat in one point
CSP
• A Heliostat (from Helios, the Greek word for sun, and stat, as in stationary)
• Heliostat is a device that includes a mirror, usually a plane mirror, which turns so as to keep reflecting sunlight toward a predetermined target
HELIOSTAT
• Reflective surface of mirror is kept perpendicular to the bisector of the angle between the directions of the sun and target
• Installed capacity – 20 MW• Annual generation – 110 GWh• Heliostats – 2,650
GEMASOLAR POWER PLANT
• The concentrated solar power used to heat fluid deposit
• Working fluid is heated upto 250–1000°C• This fluid is used to run steam turbine
WORKING
TYPES OF SOLAR CONCENTRATERS
• Heliostats• Parabolic trough collectors• Stirling dish• Fresnal concentrator
PARABOLIC TROUGH COLLECTORS
STIRLING DISH
FRESNAL CONCENTRATOR
• Capable of supplying power continuously• High potential under the Renewable energy
sources• Solar collectors absorb the energy from the
sun 3-4 times more efficiently than solar cells.
• The price of solar collectors is about 3 times less than the price of solar cells.
• A solar collector also generates energy on cloudy days
