The Season

of Lent:

The Art of

Fine-Tuning

The word Lent has its origins from the West Germanic “langitinaz” meaning “long days” or “lengthening of the

day” and the Old English “lencten” meaning “springtime” which in both cases referred to the increasing

amount of daylight that was taking place. Lent in Greek is known as Tessarakosti and Quadragesima in Latin

for “the Forty”- the period of time that had developed since time of the apostles in preparation for those who

would be baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Springtime is a season of renewal. New life begins to sprout from the earth. The desire to renew and refresh

lead to the “spring cleaning” many people do inside their homes as well. Window washing, turning over the

mattresses and cleaning out the closets are often the weekend chores that are done during the spring sea-

son.

During this season of renewal, consider accepting this challenge: Each day of Lent, remove one item from

your close closet that you no longer wear or an item from a drawer or closet in your bedroom, the kitchen or

the garage that you no longer use. Make sure the item is in good repair. You may want to spend some time

in prayer and reflection—thinking about who bought you the item or what places you wore the item of clothing

and how much fun you had during those occasions. At the end of the forty days of Lent, donate your items to

a place that can share them with someone who can really use them.

Here’s another idea that incorporates prayer and action: Each day, go to the dollar store, the grocery store or

another store and buy an item that you can donate. You may want to fill a box with kitchen items or kitchen or

bath supplies. You may want to involve you grandkids and buy clothes or toys for to donate to a group that

helps kids. You can also collect food items to donate to a local food pantry—such as St. George in Corryville

or St. Leo’s in West Fairmount.

We will have bags and boxes in the church that can be used to donate to the four organizations that are part

of our regular outreach. You can bring your items back to the parish office AFTER EASTER. Unfortunately

we cannot collect them until after Good Friday because we simply do not have enough storage space.

In past years, each week ministry groups from the parish were asked to provide

the soup. These volunteers prepared delicious soup from their favorite recipes—

sparing no cost to themselves. Parishioners came and enjoyed a hearty meal.

There was no cost—so no sacrifice—and no mindfulness that Lent is a time of

fasting and abstinence. Last year we had a donation box with the understanding

that parishioners would contribute the amount they would have spent if they had

dinner at a restaurant. The plan was to support St. Leo’s Food Pantry. The most

we ever collected was $48—from a total some weeks of 40 people or more!

This year we are going to emphasize even more the understanding that Lent is a time of sacrifice and a time

of simple eating. Even though Tuesdays are not days of fast & abstinence, out attitude should be that we

are gathering to enjoy a good meal together—but we should be thinking about people who struggle to feed

their families. This year we have invited representatives from the four organizations our parish supports on a

regular basis to share a few stories about the work they do and why they need our help.

DEANERY NOTES…

Archbishop Schnurr announced that effective July 1, 2020, the

Franciscans will leave St. Monica-St. George Parish in Clifton. The

Archdiocese will resume administrative leadership of the parish.

Fr. Gene Contadino, SM, will retire on June 30, 2020, as pastor of

St. Francis de Sales Parish in Walnut Hills. A new Marianist priest

will be assigned as pastor.

Fr. Pat Fairbanks, SJ, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, has been

asked by his provincial to accept a new assignment in Chicago. Fr.

Paul Licktag, SJ, will become the new pastor in August. Fr. Matt

Gamber, SJ, has aked to be reassigned to a new ministry. Fr. Jim

Ackerman, SJ, who is currently serving as the Parochial Vicar at St.

Jude, will replace Fr. Gamber at St. X.

BRING IN YOUR PALMS FROM LAST YEAR TO BE BURNED

AND USED NEXT YEAR ON ASH WEDNESDAY:

Palm Sunday & Ash Wednesday are linked in a very interesting way: Palm Sunday might very well be called “Irony Sunday” because the same crowds that welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem would be calling for his crucifixion five days later. The ashes on our brow on Ash Wednesday are not only a reminder of death and sin – they are a reminder of Holy Week’s disingenuous praise. On the first day of Lent, we take memory of last year’s joyous celebration of Palm Sunday by quite literally rubbing it in our faces. The tracing of ashes is a tangible metaphor of the weakness of our spirituality: one moment our devotion to our Lord is like a blaze of glory, the next it is nothing more than a trace of burning ember.
