for the Nations, for she projected into the world, by prayer, fasting and patience, the Light of Christ. Pope Francis showed himself a great missionary, engaging people of faith and people of no faith, rallying all to the Gospel of mercy and love and calling all to responsible action for the good of others. He spoke the message. Even more he also lived the message, some-times his actions speaking even more eloquent than his words. In his message to the Church for this World Mission Sunday, he wrote:

“…we ask ourselves: “Who are the first to whom the Gospel message must be proclaimed?” The answer, found so often throughout the Gospel, is clear: it is the poor, the little ones and the sick, those who are often looked down upon or for-gotten, those who cannot repay us (cf. Lk 14:13-14). Evangelization directed pref-erentially to the least among us is a sign of the Kingdom that Jesus came to bring: “There is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor. May we never abandon them” (Evangelii Gaudium, 48).

At Holy Cross Parish, we are set precisely at the right place to be missionaries and evangelizers who proclaim the Gospel loudly and strongly. We are summoned by the Lord and sent forth by him, armed only with the Gospel and conviction. All we have to do is step across the street!! I hope you will be generous to the World Mission Day collection, an annual collection for the Propagation of the Faith that supports the missionary work of the Universal Church. Even more, I ask your prayers for all missionar-ies, but most importantly for the missionary work of our parish. May we reach out and go out to those around us who hunger to know the Christ.

Fr. Bob

Being a Missionary

Today we celebrate World Mission Sunday. October 1

st celebrated the Memorial of St. Thérèse of

the Child Jesus. We know her better as St. Thérèse of Lisieux, or popularly as, “the Little Flower”. She died at the age of 24 of tuberculosis in her Carmelite Convent in 1987. She was canonized on May 17, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. The Discalced Carmelites are a cloistered community of nuns, that is, they live their lives in prayer behind the convent walls. Interestingly today, the Holy Father, Pope Francis will canonize her parents, Louis and Zelie Martin, the first couple ever to be canonized together. Their canonization takes place during the Synod on the Family. From the age of 15 until her death, she lived behind the walls of the Carmelite Convent of Lisieux in Normandy, France. Yet two years after her canonization, on December 14, 1927, responding to the petition of many missionary bishops, Pope Pius XI proclaimed St. Thérèse the Patron of the Missions, to stand along with St. Francis Xavier, the Jesuit missionary to India. Unlike St. Francis Xavier who traveled from Portugal to India, the East Indies, and Japan to preach the Gospel, b St. Thérèse never left her convent. How did the Church ever proclaim her the Patron of the Missions? She was a missionary at heart. She wanted to go to Vietnam, but her poor health prevented her from making such an arduous journey. Instead, from her poor convent and her solitary, prayerful life, she offered her prayers and her sufferings for missionaries around the world. On World Mission Sunday, October 19, 1997, St. John Paul II preached these words at the Mass at which he proclaimed St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face with the title “Doctor of the Church”

“Thérèse Martin, a discalced Carmelite of Lisieux, ardently desired to be a mis-sionary. She was one, to the point that she could be proclaimed patroness of the missions. Jesus himself showed her how she could live this vocation: by fully practicing the commandment of love, she would be immersed in the very heart of the Church’s mission, support-ing those who proclaim the Gospel with the mysterious power of prayer and communion. Thus she achieved what the Second Vatican Council empha-sized in teaching that the Church is mis-sionary by nature (cf. Ad gentes, n.2). Not only those who choose the mission-ary life but all the baptized are in some way sent ad gentes.”

On this World Mission Sunday we are reminded of our own role as a MISSIONARY. Whether we travel near or far, by the way we live, we are proclaiming the Gospel, for the good of others and the glory of God. If not, we are contrary to the light of the Gospel; we are dispelling darkness. St. Thérèse, following her “little way” of charity, was truly a giant of a missionary, a Light
