ARCHBISHOP OF DETROIT

October, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I wanted to extend a word of gratitude for all of you who have come to participate in our Mercy in Action day. As Catholics in the Archdiocese of Detroit, we have committed our-selves irrevocably to the work of giving witness to the power of God’s mercy. I am so grateful for your willingness to open your hearts to respond to Christ’s call today, to come together to give witness to the fact that our lives have been changed by our encounter with the Merciful Lord, and that we in turn are ready to bring this mercy into the world. Please know of my prayerful support as you engage in this work today. With renewed thanks, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ,

The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit

Musical Notes… For me, choosing a favorite piece of music is like choosing a favor-ite food. It is incredibly difficult because there is something to love about every dish. But, there is one piece of music from the church that grabs my full attention every time; Ubi Caritas. Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. “Where charity and love are, God is there” is the English translation. What began as a Gregorian chant that some music scholars be-lieve originated before the formation of the Catholic Mass, "Ubi Caritas" has evolved into many iterations. This weekend, I chose Gregory Norbet’s version. Norbet is a respected spiritual leader, composer, singer and retreat director. He spent 21 years as a Bene-dictine monk. He has composed some of the Catholic church’s most popular songs; Hosea, All I Ask of You are two of the many. His version of Ubi Caritas is a very simple polyphonic composi-tion. Meaning, the music consists of at least two simultaneous lines of independent melody. So, listen for a traditional Latin mel-ody alongside an English melody. If you are interested in another version to chew on, I highly rec-ommend Ubi Caritas by Maurice Durufle. Durufle composed the arrangement in 1960 as part of his Quatre motets sur des thèmes grégoriens, Op. 10, by using only the first stanza of the original chant. Blessings on your week,

Debi Szeliga, Music Director

Faith Formation & Youth Ministry News Congratulations Confirmandi, sponsors and families on participating in the Sacrament of Confirmation! We do not look at this as a graduation from Faith Formation classes but a journey through faith that your child will continue. We ask that you help them decide where their gifts and talents are most needed at the Parish. Some will remain as Altar Servers or join the High School Ministry with their peers. Others may want to sign up to distribute Holy Eucharist as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion or become Lectors.

Still others may choose to show their musical abilities through our Music Ministry. Whatever our Confirmandi choose to do, let's welcome them as our newly Confirmed with the continued Christian responsibility of serving others!

Students from the Middle School & High School Ministries wanting community service should meet this Sunday, October 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the Youth Room. Please ring the doorbell to get let in and of course, please wear a mask! We should be done by 8:00 p.m. for pick-up by parents. This "surprise" service has been told to both groups and this is just a reminder of time and place to meet!

This week: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday (October 26, 27 and 29), From 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., collection of monthly homeschool assignments for Grade K-8 will be done. This is for Home School Students Only in Grades K-6 who are not sending their materi-als via the Sadlier Portal or missed an assignment due to the expiration of the assignment online. Middle School Students also need to drop off their October Assignments or email them to [email protected] to receive credit. Simply place work done in a plastic bag with your child's name on it and place it in the box. Assignments will be graded and an email sent with corrections or notes in it. If your child is in in-person learning, assignments are being done in class and corrected so no drop off is needed. Let's try to keep up to date with our assignments, so when possible and we can all return to class, it will be an easy transition!

Special Request to St. Pio Parishioners

During the holiday season, St. Pio Parish donates bags of food for families in need to supplement their holiday tables. We would like to help as many families as possible this year, as it has been a difficult time for so many. We would like to include a gift card to Kroger, Meijer, or Aldi, for families to pur-chase their own turkey or ham. Please consider donating a gift card or cash to help those in need. Your donation may be placed in an envelope marked ‘TURKEY OR HAM’ and put in the collection basket at Mass, put in the parish mailbox on the west side of the church, or mailed to the parish office. We also have shopping bags with requested items in the vestibule in church. Thank you for you generous spirit and support. May God Bless You, Tina Bullis, Christian Service Coordinator

Preferential Option for the Poor

The Gospels share how Jesus saw dignity

and value in every living person, especially

those on the margins and those discarded

or overlooked by the authorities. His ex-

ample of charity and love for others inspire

within the human heart a desire to serve

the less fortunate. Catholics should con-

sider how candidates will support policies

that improve economic conditions and

protect the vulnerable.

St. Vincent de Paul is

the patron saint of

charities. He founded

several hospitals and

collected funds for

war victims. His life

inspired Blessed Frederic Ozanam to create

the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in 1833,

which offers person-to-person services for

those in need. Catholics are called to help

one another through acts of charity and

justice in the public realm.

PRAYER TO

Padre Pio

FOR HEALING

Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, obe-dient father, you loved the sick and infirm more than

yourself because in them you saw Jesus. In the name of God you performed miracles

of healing in body, soul and mind.

Your intercession with God healed the ills of past and present and strengthened peo-ple to respond with confidence to future challenges. Those who came to you re-

gained a sense of spiritual integrity as you rekindled hope in their lives, and encour-

aged them to renew the spirit in their hearts.

Through the intercession of Our Heavenly Mother, may we experience your powerful assistance and be healed in our bodily and spiritual needs. Gratefully give praise and

thanks to God for all His blessings.

Amen

Act of Spiritual

Communion My Jesus,

I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You

into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my

heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen
