Dear HGP Community,

The dawning of this new academic schoolyear brings with it even more change thanusual for us at Holy Ghost.

As many of you already know, after an extensive search and a thorough review ofthe candidates, Mr. Jeffrey Danilak wasnamed the new Principal of Holy GhostPrep last May. I am excited about what Jeffbrings to HGP as our new academic leaderand look forward to working with him tobuild on the solid foun-dation that has made theschool successful overthe past fifty years.

Jeff is no stranger toHoly Ghost – he is anaccomplished educatorwith an abundance ofdiverse accomplish-ments. A member of theHoly Ghost Prep facultysince 1996, when he washired as a teacher in theEnglish Department (ofwhich he later becamethe Chair), Jeff hasworked the past fouryears as the school’s Academic Dean. As well, he has participatedin the Strategic Planning Retreat in 2011and has also served as a member of theschool’s Middle States Accreditation Team,Academic Committee, and AdmissionsCommittee. In addition to these academiccontributions to the school, Jeff coachedHGP’s golf team from 1997 to 2001, win-ning two PIAA District One Champi-onships (1998, 1999) and twice being

named Coach of the Year by the BucksCounty Courier Times (1997, 1998). Mostrecently, he served as coach of the Freshmansoccer team.

A graduate of LaSalle University with aBachelor of Arts degree in English and Secondary Education and having graduatedSumma Cum Laude with his Masters degreein 2006 in Educational Leadership and Administration from The George Washing-ton University, Jeff brings a very strong focus

on academic excellence to Holy Ghost. Histhorough knowledge of the school and deepappreciation for the Spiritan tradition makehim the ideal candidate to lead Holy Ghostinto the next level of excellence and servicethat truly sets it apart as a Spiritan school.

Of course, no decision this large is evermade by a single individual, and I am verygrateful to the members of the Board, faculty

and administration who served on the searchcommittee. Their dedication and commit-ment were instrumental in discerning thepath forward for the school. They gave generously of their time, effort and energyto interview and rank the many candidatesthat applied for the position.

Please join me in welcoming Jeff to thisnew role and supporting him in the transition which will be exciting and challenging at the same time.

Of course, the excitementwe all feel to have Jeff asour new Principal is tempered by our sadness atsaying goodbye to our now-former Principal,Michael O’Toole. Mikedevoted himself to the students, families, and faculty of Holy Ghost formany years in the finest tradition of Spiritan service. While we all wishhim the best of luck as hebegins a new stage of hisown life as the Principal ofLa Salle College HighSchool, his alma mater, he

will surely be missed by the Holy Ghostcommunity.

With One Heart and One Mind,

Rev. Jeffrey Duaime, C.S.Sp. ’76 President

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

If I were an outsider stepping intothis position, it might be easier tocraft my first message to the alumniand supporters of Holy Ghost. First,I would write that I am honored andexcited to be the next principal ofHoly Ghost. Next, I would lay out mycredentials by mentioning I havebeen a member of the HGP commu-nity for over 16 years as a facultymember, coach, department chair, and Dean of Studies. Finally, I wouldfollow it with some plans on how to improve Holy Ghost. While thiswould be an easy way to start the letter (mainly because it would all be true– I am honored and excited to continue my service to Holy Ghost, now asits principal), it would also seem a little artificial, like coming home fromwork each night and introducing myself to my family.

Holy Ghost has been an integral part of the fabric of my life for so long– so much so, I cannot imagine what my life would be presently withoutit. Not long ago, when my family and I decided to make some changes inour lives, there were certain things that we agreed were too important tochange. My work at Holy Ghost, we realized, was the most important ofall the factors we considered. That was not negotiable. How could it be?

I truly feel blessed to embark on a new challenge in such a familiar andloving place. Fortunately, I am surrounded by familiar faces and friendswho will help to shape and define who we are, as a school, in this time oftransition. We all share common experiences, challenges and stories and, while some of these may be different and unique, it is what we share thatmakes us who we are. We are Holy Ghost. We share a rich Spiritan tradition and a strong commitment to academics. These continue to defineus and make indelible marks on all those associated with our past, presentand future. And I am proud to remain a part of that.

With One Heart and One Mind,

Jeffrey DanilakPrincipal

Appointedaving served at Holy Ghost for the past 15 yearsas a math teacher – and as the Mathematics

Department Chair for 14 of those – Mrs. GeraldineCarmine will add Dean of Studies to her already impres-sive resume. Mrs. Carmine was named to the positionafter an exhaustive search to fill the vacancy left by Jeff Danilak’s promotion to Principal.

“I’m looking forward to working with students in thisnew role,” Mrs. Carmine said. “This is a new and exciting challenge.”

A graduate of both St. Joseph’s University and Arcadia University, Mrs. Carmine will continue to teachin the Math Department and remain Department Chairfor the new school year. However, there is one bigchange coming that has left Mrs. Carmine forlorn whenlooking forward –and it is a disap-pointment only atruly die hard mathteacher would feel.

“Calculus. I’mreally, really going tomiss teaching cal-culus,” she said.

ratitude is the lastrefuge of a person over-

whelmed by the kindness ofothers,” Rev. William Headley,C.S.Sp. told the Holy Ghost Prepgraduating class of 2012 during hisCommencement address this past June.

Fr. Headley, himself a 1956 graduate of the HolyGhost Missionary College – the name HGP went by beforegaining its present day moniker – shared memories of his timeon the Cornwells campus, along with challenging the graduatesto retain their spiritual identity and ethics as they enter into aworld beyond the Holy Ghost campus. He also pointed to thethread of brotherhood and community that continues to link allclasses that come through Holy Ghost.

This theme ofbrotherhood also foundits way into the remarks

of class ValedictorianRyan Horgan, who remem-

bered his classmates coming together to do amazing things over

their four years together.

The class, as a whole, will disperse mightily as they ventureforth. While some graduates will certainly stay local, going touniversities in and around Philadelphia, others will travel far toattend college, with graduates heading as far west as the SanDiego University in California and as far east as the Universityof Bath in England.

The 2012 baseball season had its ups anddowns. There were more downs early in theseason, but the team found resiliency amidststruggles and injuries and ended up in theDistrict One Tournament. Even though theteam struggled against strong pitching in theBAL, it posted impressive wins over localpowers Archbishop Ryan, LaSalle and, mostnotably, a thrilling 5-3 win over cross-townrival, Bensalem, under the lights at RamblersBaseball Field. This was a key win that

allowed the team to achieve a .500 record when, at times, it hadn’t lookedpossible.

The team’s resiliency and character evolved down the home stretch. With 3 key members injured, the team continued to play tough nonetheless. The coaching staff could not have asked for more during the District Playoff game against Phoenixville. The boys hit the ball hard, MichaelYoung pitched his best game of the season, and the team played nearly perfect defense in the field, but the breaks didn’t go their way. This teamcame together in the toughest of times and had a successful season.Coach Smeraglio, and Assistant Coaches Grabowski, Slawter and Rossomando were very proud of this group for coming together and battling to the very end.

Coach Omrod’s team came out of the gatewith a great start, going 4-0 with big winsover the larger programs of Kennett, Coun-cil Rock South, CB South and ArchbishopRyan. One of the best played games camenext, an exciting 4-overtime game vs. Plymouth Whitemarsh. The game could havegone either way, but luck was not on HGP’sside that day. However, the team’s characterand competitive nature was evident, andwould carry them to a successful season.

In BAL play, the team went a perfect 5-0, but the two contests that mattered mostwere the victories over defending championNew Hope. Sweet revenge came with adominant performance in an 11-6 win atNew Hope late in the season that clinchedHGP’s very first BAL title in lacrosse.

The team fought hard in its first rounddistrict game against Penncrest. With a cou-ple of starters missing due to injuries, theteam fell a bit short in its quest to win theschool’s first district playoff game. However, this year’s team will be remembered for itsresiliency and the character which developedfrom it senior leadership and involvedyounger players. They truly came togetheras a close team.

t e n n i s

Traditions are established over time, butmost of them have a defining moment. The tennis program’s defining moment wastheir State Championship of one year ago. This year’s team, coached for the 6th year byJustin Goulet, ’99, was extremely young andinexperienced, with 7 of the 9 top playersfrom last year’s State Championship team

having graduated. But all team members ac-cepted the role of defending the League,District, and State Championships from2011. Taking every competitor’s best shot, the team competed until the very end andcontinued the success of the HGP tennisprogram.

The team finished 2nd in the BAL toLower Moreland, but defeated league-rivalNew Hope Solebury in BAL Play. HGP’stennis team had an extremely competitivenon-league schedule. This year’s squadknocked off the perennially tough CouncilRock-South 7-0, Souderton 5-2,Phoenixville 5-2, and CB West 7-0. It fin-ished with a solid 14-4 overall record and 7-1 in the BAL. The team’s success in theBAL earned them a bid to the PIAA District One Tournament for the 3rd year ina row, and our 4th time in 5 years.

The team advanced to the District OneSemifinals for the 3rd straight season, defeating Church Farm 5-0. The team bat-tled against a tough Lower Moreland squadin a re-match in the District Semis, butLower Moreland prevailed 3-2 in a veryclose match. The 2012 team gained valuableexperience and they look to maintain thetennis tradition in 2013.

o U t d o o r t r a c K

The biggest story of the 2012 season forCoach Meistering’s squad was the domina-

tion of the seniors. These seniors scored aninordinate amount of points – each andeveryone scoring - and have left a void thatchallenges all remaining team members tofill with their own hard work to continue theteam’s great tradition of success next year –as the 2012 team won HGP’s 18th consecutive Bicentennial Athletic LeagueTrack and Field Championship.

This year’s team qualified the most in-dividual athletes ever to the 2nd day ofcompetition at the PIAA District I AAATrack & Field Championships, held atCoatesville Area High School. Jeff Ainsleyadvanced to the semifinals of the 110 MeterHigh Hurdles, but could not overcome thehard hit of a hurdle to advance to the finals. However, Christian Kardish and Ryan Horgan placed 7th and 8th respectively, eachsetting personal best records and qualifyingto the state championships. Zack Israel finished 8th, qualifying to the state champi-onships and the outdoor nationals, and set anew school record of 9:26.39, bettering arecord set 25 years ago in 1987 by USAToday All-American Nick Costantino ’87.

The team also finished the season withthe most individuals ever qualifyingthrough to the PIAA State Champi-onships: Christian Kardish ’14 and RyanHorgan ’12 in the 1600 Meter Run and ZackIsrael ’12 in the 3200 Meter Run.

The team looks forward with positiveanticipation as many younger athletes will beentrusted to carry on the current tradition ofsuccess and set new traditions of higher competitive prowess.

hile Holy Ghost has alwaysprided itself on producing young

men of moral integrity and scholasticstrength, it has also produced its fair shareof graduates who have excelled in thesporting world. From athletes to analysts – Brett Donahue, ’93, currentlyworks in New York for Fox Sports – andfrom sales executives to orthopedic surgeons – Dr. Joseph Czarnecki, ’87, hashelped heal the athleticailments of Beantownplayers for the Bruins,Patriots and Red Sox –Firebirds have made aname for themselves onthe playing fields and inthe board rooms andnews rooms of some ofthe biggest names insports across the country.

“Holy Ghost providesyou with an incrediblystrong education, whilealso preparing you todeal with the challengesthat will exist through-out your life,” said Joe Iuliano, ’02, whocurrently works at ESPN’s World Head-quarters as, among other things, a specialty camera operator. His career hastaken him not only around the country –he has trekked across campuses as part ofthe College Game Day crew – but alsoaround the world: Joe was fortunateenough to cover the 2010 World Cup inSouth Africa.

And Joe got his start shooting at HolyGhost. During his junior year, he workedclosely with Mr. Jeff Danilak to developHGP’s first Cinematography course – a

class designed to teach students how toshoot and edit their own films.

As for Joe’s involvement in sports? Thatstarted at HGP, as well, but perhaps notthe way you might think.

“I ran track – and by ‘ran track,’ I meanI attended the practices and fulfilled myyearly athletic requirements,” he said.“Needless to say, I knew early on that my

sports career would be behind the camera.”

Joe isn’t the only graduate to credit HolyGhost for playing an important role in hiscareer in sports journalism.

“Holy Ghost taught me what it meantto work hard, that anything in life is

achievable if you put in the time and ef-fort,” said Frank Seravalli, ’06, who hasworked for the Philadelphia Daily Newsas a Flyers beat writer since 2009. Havingstarted at the paper as an intern in 2008,Frank quickly learned how to apply thelessons he learned at HGP to find successin the competitive world of sports writing.

“In the real world, Holy Ghost taughtme about preparationand how to present myself in the right way,”he said. “By having my‘homework’ done, andbeing more knowledge-able about everything Icould come across in therink or the locker room, Iwas able to be extremelycompetitive as a rookiegoing against well-traveled veterans in myfield.”

But Frank isn’t theonly HGP alum with tiesto the local sports scene. In fact, Firebirds have

begun to corner the corner of Broad andPattison. James Lutz, ’96, works as theManager for Ticket Operations and Premium Seating for the PhiladelphiaEagles; Jerry O’Connor, ’01, is the Coordinator of Premium Sales and Services for the Philadelphia Phillies;and Ryan O’Neill, ’00, works in the frontoffice for the Philadelphia 76ers.But, while all of these HGP alumni have

jobs that definitely make an impact on thelocal sports scene, it’s probably safe to saythat Brett Manney’s, ’04, impact has beenthe hardest – at least literally.

Brett currently plays for the MajorLacrosse League’s Philadelphia Wings asa defenseman – and was part of the Washington Stealth team that won the2010 National Lacrosse League championship. Of course, Brett got hisfirst taste of sports success at Holy Ghostas part of the school’s first-ever LeagueChampionship lacrosse team. But it wasn’t this victory or any others that stuckmost with Brett after he graduated.

“What I remember most is the cama-raderie all the students had who attendedthe games, how full of HGP pride theywere, and how special it was to play forHoly Ghost,” he said.

Now living in Center City with his twinbrother, Ryan Manney, ’04 – himself anathlete during his years at Holy Ghost –Brett is still grateful for what he feels hisalma mater offered him.

“Holy Ghost has given me so much – Ionly hope that what I return is justified for

what HGP did for me,” he said.

Of course, not all Holy Ghost alumni tobecome professional athletes have stayedso close to home. One, in fact, has foundhimself skating through the hockey rinksall the way over in Sweden.

Ryan Gunderson, ’03, currently playshockey for the Swedish Elite League’sBrynas IF, where he has excelled – becoming the league’s leading scorer fordefensemen in both 2011 and 2012, aswell as winning the league’s championship– the SM Guld – in back-to-back years.

Ryan quickly realized that there aresome lessons that translate well into any language and in any endeavor.

“At Holy Ghost, I had to work hardconsistently every day,” he said. “Thiswork ethic has continued through myhockey career, and I have realized that it is the only way to deal with struggles

and setbacks.”

And Ryan is not the only one to see thelessons he learned at Holy Ghost as playing an important role in what he does.Brett Manney, for his part, continues to seethe ongoing importance of embracing theschool’s motto of living “With One Heartand One Mind.”

“I say it all the time with some of myfriends,” he said. “Everything you do inlife should be done with your heart andmind fully behind your decisions. You canachieve or do anything if you have theright mindset and joy in your heart.”
