The project has been recently shortlisted for AJ Small Project Award.

The Stonehaugh Stargazing Pavilion is a permanent design-build project delivered by 15 MArch students from Newcastle University. It is designed for nature watching and stargazing. The pavilion was developed in partnership with Kielder Art and Architecture and the local community and it celebrates the recently acquired ‘Dark Sky’ status of the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water and Forest Park. The form of the pavilion is generated from two offset circles that form a spiral route and orientation device. The project sought to engage the village with contemporary architecture and the design for the pavilion was developed through a series of consultation and design events. The community were also actively involved in the process of construction. The project tested students’ problem solving skills and ability to take appropriate decisions on their feet. Live build timber pavilion project enhanced my knowledge of practical timber detailing, which I hope to improve further and apply in the future work.

SYNOPSIS

A sloped narrow site presented its challenges to the design brief and guided the zoning of the spaces. The future residents required a lot of open space and light, which was accommodated by the concrete frame.Extensive glazing allows the house to benefit from the views of the pine forest on the north and a close relationship of the living spaces with a garden on the south. Material palette is restricted to the elegant wood, slate and chromed metal choice. The house is partially self-build with a help of small team of builders. At the time of writing the construction is near completion.

MArch Thesis ProjectGirona, CataloniaStudio Leader: Colin Ross

DOMESTIC V IOLENCE REHABIL ITAT ION AND SUPPORT CENTRE

M A S T E R T H E S I S

This thesis is about taking an intensely private and personal subject and stitching it into the most celebrated and public part of the city. It is a study of people and place, which has emerged through an in-depth analysis of Girona.Thesis has been framed up around a particular aspect of the city [mass/ solidity/ protected space/ hidden gardens], which was responded to through its very own methodology and language. On the other hand, a specific issue discovered through field study, namely - domestic gender violence introduced as a problem during the visit to police headquarters had an immense impact on the outcome too. Furthermore, personal architectural interests [timber, detail, craft] were a part of investigation that has continued through the year. The thesis investigated how architecture can create conditions for healing human body and spirit. As Maggie’s Centres have proved possible, architecture can make people’s smashed egos expand again, make them feel important and light-hearted again. The intent was to create a place fitting for catharsis and where the architecture facilitates healing occurring inside.
