Old Testament Survey: Book of 1 Chronicles
Worship, Praise, Prayer and Glory
Background
• The name, “Chronicles,” given by Jerome in the fourth century AD, means diaries or annals.
• The Hebrew title is “Words of the Days,” or “Journals;” today, we might say “the events of the time.”
• First divided in the Septuagint Greek translation in the third century BC and given the name, “Omissions,” or “The Things Omitted.”
• “Chronicles of Whole Sacred History.”
• The text does not name the author or time of writing.• According to the Jewish Talmud, Ezra was the author.• Chronicles is similar to Ezra.• Written from a priestly viewpoint• Genealogies, temple worship, ministry of the
priesthood, and obedience to God’s law• Compare Ezra 1:1-3—2 Chronicles 36:22,23• Chronicles and Ezra may have been one continuous
history, as were Luke and Acts.

Uzza; therefore that place is called Perez Uzza to this

Message
• Like the books of Samuel and Kings, which they supplement, I and 2 Chronicles were originally ONE book.
• Not just repetition; a divine editorial on the conduct and actions of God’s people.
• While 1 and 2 Kings give Israel’s political history, Chronicles gives insight into her spiritual and religious history.
• David’s dynasty in Judah
Purpose
Outline of the Book
• Part 1: Chapters 1—9 = genealogies. Enabled determination of landowners so tribal territories could be restored after the Babylonian captivity.
• Part 2: Chapters 10—29 = Saul’s overthrow and death (10); King David’s reign. Much information about the temple and various wars.
• Supplements the four previous books (1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings). Contains more info on the royal tribe--Judah.
• Records many of the same events, but from a different vantage point
• The first four give historical facts; these two give spiritual and divine thoughts
• First four written from man’s viewpoint; the Chronicles books give God’s viewpoint.
• The first four are political; Chronicles is religious.
