Old Strathcona History

A Provincial Historic Areawhat do a train and a wide and deep river valley have in common? in 1891, they were the combination that created a new settlement in the edmonton area. When the Calgary and Edmonton Railway made its way to the southern bank of the North Saskatchewan River, it deemed the bridging of the valley to the Edmonton side a prohibitive expenditure. It was much easier to end the train line on the south side and to create another community. The settlement of South Edmonton started with the train station, the South Edmonton Hotel (now the Strathcona Hotel) and a main street named after William Whyte, the Vice-President of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

strathcona votes to amalgamate with edmontonThe 1910-1912 boom more than tripled the population of the area and both municipalities struggled with housing and infrastructure. It became obvious that a joint effort would work better. After some interesting negotiations, the citizens of Strathcona voted for amalgamation with Edmonton and in 1912, the City of Strathcona ceased to exist.

strathcona becomes a cityOver the next few years, both Edmonton and South Edmonton experienced an influx of settlers. Some bought supplies for their new homesteads and moved on, others stayed to make a new life in one of the settlements. By 1899, there were enough people living on the south side that the settlement was incorporated as the town of Strathcona. Even more people began taking the train west looking for new opportunities and in 1907, the town became the City of Strathcona. Pioneer families prospered and erected buildings with their family names proudly inscribed on the facades. Alberta became a province in 1905 and the first premier, A.C. Rutherford, lived and practiced law in Strathcona. It was his influence that established the University of Alberta in Strathcona making it the University City.

Provincial status for the areaThis work was recognized when Edmonton City Council, represented by Mayor Mandel, requested provincial heritage status for Old Strathcona. The Honourable Hector Goudreau, Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture established the Old Strathcona Provincial Historic Area on January 30, 2007.

saved by citizen actionWith the infamous boom and bust cycles of the Alberta economy, there were periods of intense development pressure. As a result of the 1970s oil boom, most of the north side heritage building stock was lost to high rise development. At the same time, south side was threatened with a large roadway project that would not only pave over the river valley but would take down the heritage buildings for a twelve lane freeway to the new development of Mill Woods. It took a concerted citizen effort that included the heritage community, the university, several residential communities and the newly formed Old Strathcona Foundation to stop the roadways and to begin work on revitalizing one of Canadas most significant communities.

marking the heritage areaTo mark the heritage area and to tell the story of Old Strathcona, the City of Edmonton has installed banners throughout and special sidewalk coins have been designed. The four entrances to the historic area will have plaques with different information. These are located at 81 Avenue and 104 Street; 83 Avenue and 104 Street; 105 Street and Whyte Avenue; and 103 Street (Gateway Blvd.) and Whyte Avenue.

100 Years Hub Cigar and Newstandwhen charles fisher opened shop on whyte Avenue in 1910, he had no idea that his business would last to become the longest running newsstand in canada. his inventory of newspapers and magazines from all over the world, candy and good quality cigars along with a renowned personal service made hub cigar & newstand an institution. sometime after world war ii, the business changed hands for the first time. in 1964, Ken Knowles purchased the newsstand and operated it in the original 1894 building until a fire forced him to move onto Gateway Boulevard. he chose to stayphoto by: Erin Prout

in his new location and his loyal customers followed. After 44 years in the business, Ken wanted to retire. there was some concern that the store would close but steven, dan and hal created a partnership and in 2008, the business changed hands for only the fourth time in 100 years. today, the same personal service and a lot of the same inventory items keep hub cigar & newstand the special place it is.

Where Music Livesbuildings in Old Strathcona. start Your own BandFor anyone who wants to start their own band (or, first, learn a musical instrument), a trip to Gordon Price Music is essential. We have everything that a young musician needs, from music lessons to the manuscript paper to write your songs on to all kinds of musical instruments, to reference books on how to record using Macs Garage Band program, says Bryanna Clarke, manager of Gordon Price Music. The store has MIDI recording units too, which bring the recording studio into any persons living room. When it comes to musical instruments, Clarke says the biggest sellers are definitely guitars, keyboards and drums. The best part is that youre buying them from people whose musical knowledge runs deep. One of the reasons why people come here is because were musician-owned and musicians work here, she says. They know their stuff. Gordon Price Music also offers thousands of titles of sheet music everything from Beethoven and Bach to the drum music for System of a Down. You can also find the music to popular musical theatre productions like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King and even the sheet music for the soundtrack to the popular animated film UP.

Go anywhere and youll hear it.Theres howlin alt-country at the Black dog, all kinds of music including a night of upbeat Celtic folk at oByrnes, and on weekends, theres always a piano player at Muriettas Bar & Grill. Come to the Pawn shop on the right weekend and youre bound to experience punk rock that kicks with the spirit of 1977. Youll likely to find a jazz legend gracing the stage at the Yardbird suite, one of the oldest venues in the city and one of the premier jazz joints in the country. For the east coasters, The atlantic trap & Gill is a piece of home. not just for touring bands but for local musicians who help to define this citys spirit of music. The strong local scene is one of the reasons why Michael Purcell, general manager of Blues on whyte is now going on his 12th and very successful year with this live blues music venue. The local music scene is excellent and very eclectic, says Purcell. As a producer/booker, I get a lot of options. Every night a week, we have live music happening onstage. Weve been doing live music at this venue since the 1900s, Purcell continues. In 2012, well be celebrating our 100th year. Blues On Whyte is located in the Commercial Hotel, one of the oldest

when searching for those really neat, quirky special something gifts, shoppers are flocking to old strathconas one-of-a-kind boutiques.Gifts of imaginationShoppers will discover gift selections beyond their wildest imagination in stores such as when Pigs Fly. According to store owner, Jenny Sherwin, both tourists and locals alike are always looking for unforgettable Edmonton mementos, and the stores name itself suggest whimsical selection. The shops current bestsellers are artisan pieces where customers can get a biography on the gift items maker. Popular favourites include artisan pottery and jewellery. People want to get to know the artist behind the piece. They soak up bios! says Sherwin. Sherwin notes that its a colourful bunch of people who shop in the Old Strathcona area and being on Whyte Avenue helps the stores funky appeal. If Whyte Ave had big box stores it would lose its uniqueness, says Sherwin. The store also supports local artists and likes to keep products Canadian made. If you have anyone whos hard to buy for, When Pigs Fly is the perfect boutique. Its like Christmas here every day. You never know what youre going see, says Sherwin.

old strathcona is actually a lot like you: theres a lot more to it than meets the eye.On the surface, this district is full of fun, frivolity, fashion, and fantastic shopping. But life here isnt just about funky restaurants, coffee shops, and hangin out. There are many businesses that put a firm focus on making sure youve got all the basics covered. Need your car cleaned? Need a website designed for your new business? Need insurance for your car, your business, your home, or a trip youre looking to take? (Old Strathcona has a grand total of seven insurance companies, like Canada Brokerlink and more.) No matter what your needs are, its important to know that, practically around the corner of any street or avenue in Old Strathcona, youll find a business thats ready and willing to serve you.

car cateringCater to your car (or truck) at a wide array of shops that make sure your vehicle is in top order. There are body shops, car dealerships (in case you ever want to trade up), and if you need a fast oil change, theres lube-X. Specializing in light maintenance that isnt mechanical in nature, Lube-X started just over 20 years ago, with six stores in Edmonton. Its Whyte Avenue location is one of the original six. Its owner and operator, Dennis Silver, is a proud Edmontonian. I was born here, says Silver. I take pride in my work and like being able to help my neighbours. In his years working on Whyte Avenue, Silver finds that an Old Strathcona shopper expects quality and good service. They enjoy the uniqueness of

New mediaThe face of the world is changing, rapidly. Less than two decades ago, terms like email and the net werent part of common lingo in offices and homes. Now everyone is texting and abuzz about social media and whatever new technological trends are popping up. The face of Old Strathcona is changing too, as software designers, web developers, and graphics artists are making the lifestyle (and business) choice to make the Whyte Avenue area their home. We wanted to move out of the bustle of downtown, says Gillian Harvey, principal and designer with Plumbheavy, a graphic design company. They chose Old Strathcona, says Harvey, because we really liked the area. Its a totally different dynamic than downtown laid-back, funky. Its the complete package. Its got everything.

By everything, Harvey means that the Old Strathcona district is perfectly fitted to the lifestyle of a busy graphic designer. You can go and get a massage or run down into the river valley for a 25 minute break, she explains. Theres a vibrant arts community, great live music, good food, yoga studios and even places to go and get your teeth cleaned. Its certainly a great place to work.

the adventure travel company in Old Strathcona could mean the beginning of something incredible. Adventure travel, according to Valerie Landals, manager/sales, is going off the beaten path perhaps to places that take a little more thought to get to. A lot of the Adventure Travel Companys customers fly off to Asia, India, Australia, and into South America, going up to Machu Picchu. A standard adventure traveler (if there is such a thing) might go on a holiday anywhere from two weeks to a full year. We offer a work abroad program that helps people get work Visas in those countries, so they can spend a year in the country and work, says Landals. In other words, its a far cry from going to an all-inclusive resort where the food is no different than it is at home. Our customers travel to enrich their lives with a real cultural experience, Landals says.
