PARISH STAFF OUR PARISH MISSION

Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area.

As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

SCHEDULE

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which conse-quently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Pastor’s White Board

GETTING BEYOND ISOLATION Since March, the word I keep coming back to is isolation. What I mean by coming back to is that it is the theme of the coronavirus in terms of a feeling connected to “stay at home” and “social distancing.” It is not a good feeling. It brings up all the want to’s and want to be’s – I want to go to the baseball game, I want to visit my relatives, I want to go to school. I want to be able to not wear a mask, I want to be out at the lake with my friends, I want to be free again to do what I want when I want – are what we react with against isolation. Of course, some think this is all a hoax, but they obey the rules. Others think it is a hoax, or a plot and know who is causing it and have started to push back. Others, they follow the crowd because it seems like a way forward behind people who think they know what they are doing. The disciples, our models as Christians, after Jesus ascension when they are left alone and isolated, probably had all the dark dread, doubts, desperation that we feel in Covid-19 isolation. “When will this end?” They would ask. “When will this end?” We ask. Communion is the answer to isolation. We often think of the Sacrament of “Communion,” as some-thing we get because Jesus gives it to us, but it is actually more. It is not just coming up and receiving the body and blood of Christ, it is coming together to be the body and blood of Christ. You have heard of the word “community” to describe us as a Christian people. But to get it, maybe if we misspell and create a new word, “communion-ity” it describes what Jesus wants to do with us if we consent. The isolation the disciples initially felt was because Jesus was no longer with them. That was not their choice. That they stayed together, even though hidden from the authorities, transformed the isolation into a time of new discovery of each other, and questions about what happens next. When Pentecost came, they were ready for it. The great mystery of our faith, amid this pandemic, is that Christ is still bringing us together even though we are in isolation. But we are not in isolation for no reason, we are trying to help and preserve each other’s lives by keeping a careful distance and using precautions that fight the spread of the pandemic. I know some do not believe any of this. I wonder on some days if they are right? But the love of Christ always moves us to consider the other. If I am isolating and there is a hoax, no person dies even if we must deal with economic consequences. If I am isolating and it's real, I am not causing someone’s death, but there will be more of us to deal with the economic consequences. As we celebrate Ascension – Christ leaving the disciples in isolation, we find ourselves where they were. We are considering what we are supposed to do. How did we get to this point, both as a people and individually? Maybe isolation gives us an opportunity to re-value each other, examine the lessons Christ has given us, and make a conscious choice that when isolation ends, we reach out and recommit ourselves to be the community Christ calls us to be.
