St. Vincent de Paul Society

With people out of work due to Covid 19, the St. Vincent de Paul Society needs your help more

now than ever.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society’s members reach out to the most vulnerable in our community by providing person to person services to those in

need. This often includes making direct payments to landlords, utility and bio-fuel companies; providing other miscellaneous

necessities; and by supplying food through our food pantry. The Society is continually in need of

donations to continue its services.

If you would like to make a donation, checks can be mailed to:

St. Vincent de Paul Society P.O. Box 1014, Westerly, RI 02891

God Bless You

A sincere thank you to everyone supporting the church, your kindness is an inspiration. Donations and regular offerings have been coming in from families and local organizations.

These times are hard for everyone and harder for some, we just have to keep our faith and pray for those

who are in desperate need and those who are infected.

A Message From Fr. Peter J. D’Ambrosia

John 14:1-12 I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. Dear Friends, I hope you are well and are reading and reflecting on the Word of God for Mass each day. If we do not spend some time each day trying to understand what Jesus is asking of us then we have to honestly ask ourselves how much we love Him and want to be close to Him as the Eucharist signifies; being one “body” with Jesus and one “body” with one another, His Church. Just as Jesus is a King, in as much as He has a Kingdom, so too is it true that we are only really connected to Him as we are all active subjects who participate in His Kingdom, the Church. We can’t belong to and be one with the King unless we belong to and are one with His Kingdom, the Church. This Unity is mentioned often in the scriptures as we find in the example of John 17. Jn. 17:19-21 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth. 20 “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. It is this “oneness” with Jesus and His Church that the Holy Eucharist Banquet signifies. In the wonderful Gospel this last weekend (5th Sunday of Easter), Jesus gives an abundance of food for thought. I will briefly share with you my thoughts on Jesus’ statement, “Jesus said to him,“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” Frank Sinatra, did it “my way” but for the Christian there is no “my way” (or the highway) it is only Jesus Way. Your way and mine is of no importance to God. We say “thy will be done” in the Our Father, but these are just words and do not always necessarily reflect my thoughts, words and actions. Only those who follow Jesus as the Way and do all that He does will see God. This means that there is the earnest desire within my heart to have the love, forgiveness, mercy and peace of Jesus within me at all times and especially during times of suffering. We have to remember that the carrying of the cross is an important and necessary part of the Way. Some people are actually wayward, living out their lives as Catholics, but their hearts are far from Him and His people. His Way is to offer Himself for others completely, giving His all for those He loves, “so as to be one”. Those who follow their own way, think, feel and act in ways that suit their own agenda which has nothing to do with Jesus’ Way but rather brings division and misery to Jesus and His Church. The second is the Truth. Only Jesus is truly good because He is God. The one Truth can only come from the perfect goodness of God. Jesus tells us the Truth All the time (“and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”John 8:32). For example, whenever we are good, generous, loving and forgiving, Jesus tells us. Whenever we are sinful and selfish, which is really a daily challenge, Jesus will tells us. Only a person who really loves Jesus will want to listen to Him all day long, as did Mary, the sister of Martha, hearing how we can be more deeply one with him and his people and how we need to change (repent), in order to grow in perfection. The problem with the Truth is that many ignore it or are superficial in their acceptance or ownership of it. When we don’t embrace the Truth, we live a lie. 1 Jn 1:10 If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

FACE MASKS Do you need a face mask?

Would you like to sew face masks?

Masks are available in the parish office at St. Clare or in the church at St. Pius X.

All masks are free, we ask that you limit them 2 per person.

Jn 8:44 You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 1 Jn 2:3–5 3 The way we may be sure † that we know him is to keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: 1 Jn 4:20–21 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God † whom he has not seen. 21 This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. And the last is the Life. Following the Way and the Truth are required in order to obtain the Life with Jesus now and forever. You no doubt noticed how following the Way and the Truth attach us to Jesus at all times. This longing for Him, this closeness to Him, this dependence on Him is what leads to everlasting Life with Him. With God’s Blessing+ Fr. Peter

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.

The St. Clare & St. Vincent de Paul Parish Office will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2020 in

observance of Memorial Day. God bless, stay safe & pray.
