Purpose

• For my research project at the Old Mill Museum I have looked more into the subjects of geography and bookkeeping, and how they were taught in the early 1900s. I found geography to be interesting because of the amazing maps that were drawn. Bookkeeping was a big interest to me because it is a subject that is tied in with my major.

• I am wanting to find out the similarities and differences between teaching these two subjects in the 1900s and now.

Marquette One-room Schoolhouse

Marquette One-Room Schoolhouse• Marquette is a small town just 8 miles West of Lindsborg

• This schoolhouse is unique because it is a four-room schoolhouse

• This school house had a High school part and an elementary part

• Each of these pictures are of the 4 classes that were taught at this school

• Marquette closed last year in USD 400

Bookkeeping (Cont.)

This photo shows how they would journalize all of the accounts that the students were given. After looking at this, I found that they are very similar. The only differences are some of the account names and the dates. Today they are written on the left side of the paper instead of in the center. 1904

This is where the final answer would go once they found the answer for their account.

Bookkeeping Test

This bookkeeping test really was interesting to me. This was almost exactly like my first accounting test in high school the similarities are amazing from then and now.

After doing research I found out that teaching accounting in the early 1900s and to now is exactly the same. We just use computers instead of paper.

Geography

I found these so interesting. It is amazing to me the drawing capabilities that these students had. These maps are so detailed and look identical to a map you would see today.

These are two maps of South America. I found that they were required to show as much detail as possible. The difference between then and now is we don’t have to draw our maps we have printers to do that for us.

Geography Test

Geography was taught differently in the early 1900s. The kids were asked on their tests to find the longitude and latitude of their own homes.

They will learn about the distance from home to school, how children got to school and what kinds of adventures they might have had before and after school. They may also want to point out any difficulties that may have arisen from their choice, such as difficulty crossing a creek.

Concluding remarks

• This was one of my favorite research projects that I have done here at Bethany. At first I did not know what I was going to do my research on and then I found out that some type of business was taught in the one- room Schoolhouse. It was a blast getting to go out and do my research somewhere else rather than just online or in a book.
